The missing ‘A’ on the ashtray would definitely be on my list 😮 I’ve owned my 156 GTA for five years now, and the running costs are indeed on par with a Space Shuttle. Gearboxes are quite frail (still an Italian made part), mine needed rebuilding three times to get rid of a slight but persistent rattle. That’s one example that had it stuck in a garage for many days. But somehow you’ll always have this heart-warming joy when getting it back, like finally picking up a loved one from a long stay at the hospital.

I had a 156 2.4 jtd, 175 hp facelift The 5 cylinder diesel had such a soundtrack to it, a big whoosh from the turbo with a deep 5 cyl growl I'll always regret selling it 😞 I sold it to a guy in Blackpool and about 18 months later I HEARD IT !! In Nelson where I deliver 📦 I kid you not it was my old 156, it was in a right filthy state with a different owner. He stopped at a shop further up the road (Beaufort st) so I went and told him it used to be mine. The next time I saw it he'd put a silly rear wing on it 🤢🤢😞

I owned the GT 3.2. Fabulous car, but yup, the most expensive to run ever. My diff let go, taking the gearbox with it. Autolusso were brilliant at sorting it with the Quaife - transformed the handling. I’d change the back box to a Wizard - amazing sound. Drop-links and ant-roll bar bushes go every 2 minutes and if the head gasket goes (which mine did), it’s an engine rebuild, although the modded headers will help take the heat from the rear gasket. Plus all the usual bits that fall off!! Oh, and let’s not mention fuel economy. All that said, it’s a wonderful thing and perfect for your channel, as there will be a never ending stream of content. This one might even test your seemingly inexhaustible level of patience - but it’ll be worth it!! I’ve since had an R8V10, which was cheaper to run - but I am now back to Alfa with a 4c and a Giulietta QV - Dunno what it is about Alfas - Can’t stay away!!!!

Raise the suspension a bit, most people like the KWs for these cars. Then put the Alfa TUne equal length pipes, really changes the sound. But it hangs a bit lower. I have it on my 156 3.0, makes it sounds like a GTV6. Not sure what could be that expensive. Lower control arms every few years (no polys, they suck), 3-year cambelt and tensioners, you have cat less manifold so it won't overheat the ECU and kill it, hmm....diff is Q2 so won't break like the stock open diff if abused, some electrickeries, and sticky interior bits. Otherwise I can't see it being any less reliable than other euros.
@AlfaGTA1564 жыл бұрын
Great choice. I’ve owned my 156 GTA for 8 years and has been the most reliable car I’ve ever owned. Everyone says they are a money pit, but if like yourself good with a spanner, then costs aren’t that bad. I’ve got novitec coilovers which transforms the cars handling. You definitely need to raise yours, Maybe 15mm. I’d also fit some spacers so the wheel fills the arch and will give the car more aggressive stance. A common mod is to replace the pre cats and fit cf2 manifolds, equal length downpipes and a stainless system. I guess yours has this setup as it’s been remapped. The gear lever should be tight with no play and in stock form has quite a long throw. One mod I’d avoid is installing the short shifter bracket that attaches to the gearbox lever from totallyalfa. It Makes the shifting very stiff and the throw is too short. I actually modified the totallyalfa bracket to give a slightly shorter shift which makes for a sweet gear change. I could go on, but the main thing with these cars is that old friend, RUST. They tend to go behind the sideskirts at the rear, so check yours. If the jacking points ( very common) have been damaged, you will find the sills will start to rot from the inside I spray waxoil twice a year in all the nooks and crannies along the sills, underside, removing the plastic inner arches and generally just keep on top of it.

I own a 156 with a 3.0 dropped in from a 166, makes 232 bhp which is a hell of a step up from the 2.5 and close enough to a 3.2 GTA. Had a nice suspension package, Supersprint backbox, Ti interior, rides on 17"s with some upgraded pads. The only thing I'm missing is a Quaife differential for longevity. The Busso engine is the reason why I've had the car over 6 years and have gone out of my way to hold onto it, the car now lives a comfortable life as a garage queen I drive in fair weather and limit the mileage but it's deserved a quieter life as it was my daily up until now. A non GTA Busso won't cost much less to run than a 3.2, all 24v cars will eat suspension parts, all 147/156/GT cars will have rust issues underneath by now. From what I've read the 3.2 ECU are more fragile than lesser Busso so "may" leave your car completely undriveable with a replacement part extremely hard (or expensive) to come by. There's some talk about the CF3 revision engines manifold mounted cats creating enough heat to cook headgaskets (and the aforementioned ECUs) but that's not something I've had personal experience of. Oh and my car? There's something about the Busso V6 that one needs to try to understand, videos on KZbin or articles in magazines do not do it justice. Not the last word in out right performance but still plenty quick for the roads these days, it's the way it sounds, revs, drives, feels that nothing else I've owned comes close to matching.

I had a 147 a few years back, the gearbox sloppiness is an easy fix, replace the plastic bushes (they look like tiny top hats) on the selectors. They are just below the metal plate the battery sits on and I found a pair on eBay for under a tenner, totally transformed the driving experience. Also, the passengers door card was infuriating for me too, no amount of tightening would resolve it and I ended up with a thin strip of rubber being stuck to the left hand side of where the glove box meets the door when closed. Not exactly 'a fix', but it did the job for me.

Nice buy - I've had one for the past five years as my daily. In stock trim with the soft suspension it's more of a comfortable GT than a chuckable "hot hatch" - I bought mine when I was doing regular 100km commutes on the freeway (here in Australia) and it was fantastic for that. However, with a set of stiffer springs and good shocks (mine now has KWs) it becomes a much more precise car. It doesn't have the feedback of a lighter hatch or of a traditional sports car, but the steering is quick, and as it's an understeering car you can push hard with confidence. The glory of the car though is that engine. The torque, the sound (your exhaust sounds great, btw!). It is thirsty, however! Mine has been very reliable - I went for a known car with a full service history rather than for low KMs and have kept to the service schedule religiously, and so far no problems in 80,000km of ownership (230,000km total on the clock). I thought about selling it a year or so ago, but couldn't think of anything else that would do the same for similar money. I've got other cars for outright sports car fun and for the track, and for everything else - especially hauling a hatch full of stuff around town or cruising in comfort - the GTA is perfect and has that awesome engine you can unleash when needed.

The main culprit causing the harsh and jiggly ride may well be those 'polyflex' bushings. Polyurethane bushings are always a mistake for a road car. You CAN generally use poly swaybar bushes without much, if any, unpleasantness other than squeaking. I've found that using plenty of grease solves that problem. They do sharpen the handling a bit. The Eibach coil-overs, by themselves, might be just fine once set to an appropriate ride height.

So glad you decided on the Alfa. I would have gone for it on the sound of the engine alone! Looking forward to some interesting content in the future, especially a comparison with the ferrari in terms of the running & maintenance costs. One last point, I agree the ride height needs to be looked at.....are the tyres wearing evenly?

Congratulations on the new car. I'm sure it will be a pleasure to own, once you've sorted it out.

I like that a lot. These are very very cool (flawed, but then every hatch with a big engine seems to be so) and they make a lovely noise. Good luck!

Great choice, Jack. Looks to be in lovely condition. Love the colour but hope it doesn’t clash with the 308. An analysis of ownership costs would certainly be interesting.

I really miss my 156 Gta. They're so expensive to run, but so special.

Well you got the right color! Gratz on the new purchase. I like this because we don't get them in the States.

Such a shame.. then again we don’t get some your American stuff so cheap either. Vettes and the like!

Wow that happened very quickly, looks like you got a good one though! I have a tip on the door handles, you can refurb them with Plastikote which I've seen this done on BMW's, it replicates that 'soft touch' coating that scratches off over time and looks as good as original :)

Thanks, I’ll try it!!

When we owned our bodyshop we rented the paint workshop out to a Napoletan friend. First thing he did: He bought a brand new black 147 GTA as a company vehicle! It is a good way to burn a lot of money through! Another Italian who was providing us with material for the shop called him a lunatic with a brain problem. He knew the GTA well and was driving 60 000 miles a year in his Alfa Romeos every year himself. He was not really wrong. The GTO had to be replaced within few years and was very worn out and when the car had to be replaced with a 159 the trade in value was close to zero.

Great, now you have a proper Busso. Always good luck with it. Never let the flexhose hang down without support, it is for flexing not bending!

Auto Lusso did all the work on my GTV. Extremely thorough. Look up Giuseppe’s Broom on PH if you want to see all the work they did ... and the bills. Yours looks solid and mainly cosmetic and that’s half the luck/battle.

Congrats! I like it. And the exhaust rocks! Work out the kinks and sell it if you have reservations about keeping it. It looks good slammed which was probably the look they were going for. Good luck! Glad Pepe found a good home! Cheers

Forgot to mention - I'm not sure whether the same applies with the Eibachs (presumably with Bilstein shocks?), but with my KWs I found it was easy to set the ride too low and have the car on the bump stops - around town it wasn't immediately obvious that was the problem, but the ride was harsh and there was transmitted engine vibration in the cabin. Raising the ride height sorted that out. The stock ride height is fairly high, and really unless you're tracking it, anything lower is more about the look. Your specialist will probably have suggestions on a sensible ride height.
