Tough getting a garden started to begin with, but nothing but sand makes it harder. Your off to a good start and yes, that was a very generous donation. My garden here was nothing but a sand bed. At the time I was working on a dairy farm and I put about 6 yards of the oldest stuff I could in between my growing rows for years. For the past 4 years, I have been using the Back To Eden method, plus I add worm castings that I produce during the planting time. Now that I have rabbits, I have that available too. Good to see you all working a garden again. Love and blessings to you both.

@@HollisNancysHomestead took a long time getting there, but I had determination to grow for my family. You will be amazed at how well rabbit manure works. Are you fishing down in Fl. so that you can use that too? My plan up here in Maine is to take my boat out as soon as the ice is gone and fish for trash fish to use when I set out a punch of plants. Many blessings to you both.

I too garden in Florida, about 80 miles south of you. I am amending the sand as well like you but adding vermiculite, coir fiber and 10-10-10 fertilizer in addition to the peat and Black Cow. I also use black kow manure and have occasionally had problems with it burning my plants when mixed directly into the soil and planted a few days later. Recently, I tried a new method that seems to be working. I used this method both in containers and in raised gardens. In the bottom of the container, I put a 4 inch layer of compost, followed by a 4 inch layer of black kow. Then I added my soil mixture which was made using equal parts of old potting soil, new potting soil, black kow, peat moss, and top soil. I also added a small amount of trace minerals, some bone meal, some Epson salt, and some blood meal. Not only does it not burn the plants, but the plants are dark green, strong, and fruiting early.

My growing season starts in September and is over in June. Only Sweet Potatoes, Okra and Sugar Peas grow in June July and August. Some people use shade cloth for our summer heat.
