Heres my 1st year of piano :) Enjoy :))
I was NOT an absolute beginner. I had piano lessons from age 11-12. By the time I quit I had played a few Grade 1 pieces. The first piece you see me play, "Dance of the Hour" is actually the last Grade 1 piece I learnt. After a year of piano, I could barely read and didn't even manage to actually complete any of the pieces I'd tried to learn. 💀 However, due to these lessons, I could already identify notes and had decent hand posture when I started this journey. For this reason, my progression in the first 2/3months was definitely slightly accelerated.
Reflection on 1st Year:
I definitely wish I stuck to pieces longer. I've just counted that I learnt around 20 songs! But only finished 5 or 6. And only had 12 or so that sounded decent. I may (or may not) change this for Year 2. I find that as I improve, I'm starting to get a lot quicker at learning pieces. Maybe I'll stick to 2 pieces a month in 2023.
I'm upgrading my set up very soon. I look forward to bringing you lot along in my journey and posting on a more regular schedule :)))
Here's how much money I made on this video:
• MY FIRST KZbin PAYCH...
Pieces played:
00:35 Grade 1 Dance of the Hours - Ponchielli
1:08 The Entertainer Intro - Scott Joplin
1:15 Comptine d'un autre été (Amelie) - Yann Tiersen
2:00 Married Life Up - Michael Giacchino
2:28 River Flows in You - Yiruma
3:09 Nuvole Bianche - Ludovico Einaudi
3:36 Nocturne in E Flat Major Op. 9 No. 2 - Chopin
4:03 A Thousand Miles - Vanessa Carlton
4:27 Nuvole Bianche - Ludovico Einaudi (Again)
4:55 Nocturne in E Flat Major Op. 9 No. 2 - Chopin (Again)
5:48 To Build A Home - Cinematic Orchestra
6:27 Tiny Dancer - Elton John
6:48 Jealous - Labrinth
7:08 Vienna - Billy Joel
7:48 River Flows in You - Yiruma (Again)
8:09 Comptine d'un autre été (Amelie) - Yann Tiersen (Again)

As a pianist for 12 years (I’m also 16), you’re ability to pick up piano so quickly is astonishing. You’re going to be great if you keep your passion growing. I recommend you experiment writing your own music and making your own style, that’s what got me from “ok” to “this is the world of music.” I believe you can do great things with piano. Keep it going!

12 years!! Damn! I can't wait to be able to say I've played piano for that long. Thank you so much! I have definitely wanted to start writing music for a long time but I honestly feel like I'm lacking the music theory knowledge to do so :/ not sure if you will see this reply but do you have any tips for getting into writing music? It would be so much appreciated!!
@Snargloffin
@Snargloffin Жыл бұрын
@@edenschannel101 writing music is something I’ve never been great at, and I haven’t been doing it for very long, but I don’t think music theory stands in the way of that very much. I know quite a bit of theory and it still can’t help me write good music, you kind of just figure that out. If you’re writing for piano, then pretty much any software works well, I recommend Musescore (it’s also free). Another thing I didn’t mention before is how important it is you play for people. How you’ve developed your channel to put things to show for your work is incredibly important and I can’t say I’ve done enough public performance. It’s really what I think drives a passion for music, otherwise you do a lot of work and there’s nothing to show for it. I don’t know if you’ll ever see this either, but I’m excited for the eventual self-written content. Good luck!

Hey I have some pieces you can practice for sight reading: -Minuet in G major -Minuet in G minor C.Petzold -Für Elise As for ones you can learn: -Little prelude no.2 in c minor BWV 934 -Minuet in b minor(French suite no.3 BWV 814) also a theme for tetris -prelude in c minor from the 1st WTC by Bach -the other two movements of Mozarts C major sonata Those are my recommendations, if you like them you can learn them.

After about a year I started to lose motivation and interest in playing piano because it was so unmotivating. Looking for music, and then finding an amazing sounding piece, only for it to sound horrible after you learnt to play it because of the equipment. As a 50-year-old who just finished her 1st year of piano lessons, you are doing well. I started right off with written music, having a teacher, and struggle with memorizing. I am beginning to read music much better. I was definitely encouraged to jump in to reading music and learning to read it well, because as you said, there is limited growth if you can't read music. I really love that you added personal notes in the right margin. As an adult contemplating taking up piano it's really encouraging to see how the mind of someone in their youth (the most neuroplastic stage of life) works in the learning process in regards to memory, boredom, etc. It helps me to feel like, hey ok, maybe my memory won't be so dusty to cause me great difficulty in learning this if this young person forgot the name of their favorite childhood movie. (Just so it's not misconstrued, I mean this as a compliment.) Thank you! :*)

As someone who's studying Psychology, this was such an awesome and interesting comment to read!! I've never quite thought about it in that way. It's so interesting that I can't remember the film as the song is incredibly close to my heart and I can almost see the movie in my mind's eye when I play or listen to it! I strongly encourage you to pick up piano! I've fallen in love with it. If i'm being transparent, I probably enjoy listening to it more than I do playing it🤣 I probably spend about 70% of my piano time just listening to videos of other people play. I genuinely love the instrument and deeply appreciate other musicians for the nuances they bring to pieces. Writing this reply made me smile a lot, so thanks! P.s thanks so much! I was worried the comments i was writing next to the videos were way too wordy and personal and borderline annoying😅

Insane progress for a total beginner. When I started piano my mom forced me to play a level 3 RCM piece, and I learned to read sheet music by her dictating the notes😢. Also, it’s total insanity to play those nocturnes! To play them well is impossible for 99% of beginners, but even hitting the notes is crazy. I’ve been playing for 4 years and am just at the level of those, and still sometimes miss notes even with huge experience in jumps already, and several months worth of learning op 9 no 2

@@edenschannel101 your progress will go leaps bounds with a great teacher, for most people it would take more then a year to touch that level 1 piece, the prodigies on KZbin are a tiny minority! For sure. A teacher is pretty much imperative in my opinion. I hope to get one later this year after my exams when I'm not so busy. For now I've gotta go solo. I may be going away from home for university so I've probably got to wait till then to hunt for a good one. I think one of the reasons why I enjoy piano is also because I've become better than my mum🤣 she's better at reading I'll give her that but didn't have much freedom with the pieces she learnt ( this was back in the 90s ) as teachers were a lot more conservative and so she didn't practice much.

Take it from someone who has been on this planet a while. It doesn’t matter what it is - it could be skateboarding or programming or an instrument - if you had the discipline to learn all on your own and stick with it, you have everything it takes to do and learn anything there is in life. Remind yourself how you proved that to yourself because people have a way of not reminding you. It’s awesome to see.

As the youngest of four who is the ONLY ONE who can't play the piano, I find comfort in this video. All my older siblings are GOOD at the instrument except me, and sometimes I look back and regret the days I told myself to stop taking those lessons. If I could go back in time, I'd slap my younger self for not practicing harder and actually liking piano. This time around, I'll definitely learn. This showed me it's not too late to try again

You've done extremely well for one year. A tip I think you should know is that for a lot of pieces, especially Chopin and Satie, it's better to give your own "touch" to the piece, staying at the same tempo throughout with the same volume sounds mechanical rather than organic. Good luck on your journey :)

Watching your progress gives me hope and ambition and inspiration. I started a couple years ago as an adult learner of music with a ukulele and recently had a massive change in my life having now moved to the other side of the world from the UK to HK and find myself with a bunch of time. So I bought myself a starter keyboard and started a slow process of learning piano. I’m learning through synthesia but a few friends have advised not to and I would find it much more rewarding going through reading music sheets the traditional way. I’m on week one. Well done on your progress. Amazingly hard work

Omg that's amazing! And I hope your new life is treating you well. Synthesia is tempting although I would always recommend learning to read sheetmusic (if you want to continue learning piano in the long run). I feel like synthesia is OK for messing around on piano but I do honestly think learning sheet music is worthwhile. Particularly as you advance. Learning to play Fantasie Impromptu using synthesia, for example, sounds treacherous 😅 I wish you so much good luck! Learning piano is so rewarding and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

I think I can cut myself a slice, just take a new song and do not get angry about it. Ive been playing for 13 years now(im turning 17)and you made alot of progress and I'm happy we can share the same passion for this wonferful instrument,Im only now learning walz in a minor by Chopin and have learnt it in 2 weeks perfectly,take your time,also work on your handposture,my teacher told me to pretend you're holding a tennis ball while your playing,but non the less well done,just don't rush into it too quickly otherwise you miss the fine details,especially with your trills you have the wrong fingering etc,also noticing you put your fingers flat on the keys,try and put your finger tips not flatten your finger on the key
@edenschannel101
@edenschannel101 Жыл бұрын
That's awesome you've been playing for so long!! This is a great comment. I definitely agree with the take your time thing! I definitely needed more time for Waltz in A minor. 2 months after I tried learning it back in october/ November, I tried again and actually started to pick it up easily. I think the issue is that I'm too impatient and get easily discouraged if I don't see progress immediately. As for the curved fingers thing, I definitely agree!! I've been working on having curved fingers a lot more recently. Its kind of hard as sometimes I feel it's practically impossible to have super curved fingers in certain situations as I don't have the biggest hands and I often need to reach notes. As for trills, I've tried them with fingers 1 and 2 but I honestly find 2 and 4 easier, so I kind of just stuck to it. Sometimes I use 1 and 2. Perhaps I'll explore 1 and 2 again. Thank you so much for this great comment!

Thank you so much! Feels like we're the same people in alternate universes hahaha. Yup I have still not gotten over the habit of getting bored of pieces half way through 😭😭😭 I'm working on it🤣

Oh my god your experience is exactly like mine! Although I’m a bit further along it’s reassuring to see my difficulties reflected in someone else. My biggest problem is moving on to new pieces like everyday but I’m glad I read music from the start

Im Very impressed how on week 1 youre already playing this piece! It's harder for beginners, especially 1 week beginners, so youre really amazing! Also love how you managed to. get so far during 1 year! keep it up

Definitely keep your left hand more “rounded”. Your right looks great. A rounded left hand will allow you to control the bass of most pieces and it helps with the dynamics(especially Chopin pieces)

Thanks for the tip!! I definitely hear this a lot😅. I can see that my left hand is quite flat when I play a lot of pieces. But in pieces like Nocturne in C sharp minor i feel like my left hand has to be slightly flatter so I can reach the notes.. it's quite hard to keep my hands rounded then as I don't have the biggest hands. Idk if that makes sense??

@@edenschannel101 oh it does. When playing octaves you sort of don’t have a choice. A, either suck it up, or B do rolling octaves. Sometimes if you can’t reach a note, slightly changing the fingering will make a huge difference. Though, Nocturne in C… “Chopin’s furthest stretch was an 8th” so if you’re going over an 8th, definitely change the fingering.

I absolutely don't know a thing about piano, these days i'm just trying to learn and mess around pop songs. 'cause u know i'm too impatient to learn properly but too bored to do anything else. I struggle with hand coordination, my left hand's basically useless but you made me want to actually learn, your progress is so good.

Thats awesome! I definitely understand that. As you can see by the video I'm also very impatient and struggle to complete songs. Definitely try it out!! Piano takes a lot of motivation but the results are so rewarding. The amount of ecstasy i feel playing songs I love is such s great feeling. Thanks so much for watching!!!!

Thanks for posting this! I've recently picked up piano again (I studied it when I was a kid) and it's so inspiring to watch someone else progress. I completely relate to the memorizing pieces and not being able to sight read. I did that ad a kid and regreted it, so this time I'm learning and let my teacher know I wanted to focus on sight reading! The most difficult part for me right now is trying to find pieces at my level I can start learning. All the ones I bring to my teacher she says are too hard for me right now 😅 I hope to be able to continue playing for a long time. Though my progress is slower than yours, I hope to be able to play beautiful songs in a year just like you did!

Sorry for the late response I've recently moved across the country😅 that's so awesome you've picked up piano after years! Once I get a teacher I really wanna focus on reading aswell because I honestly feel like my piano skills right now are limited because I can't read well. I need to look for piano teachers in this area 🤔 I also have that same issue of learning pieces where the reading is waaaay too hard🤣 but I have a habit of playing by ear and so I can just about manage. I believe in you and I'm certain you will be an amazing piano player in 1 year! Good luck! And I would love to hear from you in a years time :))

Oh shit, I saw the hole video thinking you were a boy, until the end)) Btw great progress and persistence! I’m now also trying to get back to playing, as I played when I was 6, then a little at 13. Now I learned Fly by Ludovico Einaudi in 8-9 hours and enjoyed it a lot! Love his music

Also I can only play pieces that I like a lot, cause other way I get bored too and forget them, but I want to memorize everything I play cause I forgot how to read sheet music. And I’m scared that it will take too much effort to remember everything. And I’m also playing by myself even without piano at home))

Great progress in just a year! And to answer your question, it does look like you’re sitting a bit low. If you Goggle piano posture, there’s lots of guides about how to sit and where your elbows/arms should be! Good luck in 2023 :)

Thank you so much for the advice! I've put my chair on a pile of old books ( the seat is on the highest setting and can't can't go up anymore) and I've immediately noticed a difference! I was definitely sitting too low. This makes me feel like I should get a teacher so I can correct other small things I've missed.

Well done!!! Now venture into jazz concepts and playing fully chord structures and melodies, I'd recommend mastering major and minor scales of all 12 key centres then train both hands to play major and minor 7th chords all 12, then dominant and diminished 7ths, then practice the circle of 5ths, it is very useful, it helped me allot

First off- thanks so much!! Secondly- Jazz is something I really want to get into! But all the theory stuff honestly kinda scares me. I know it will be so beneficial but I feel like I'm in tye deep end of the ocean😅 How long do you think it will take for me to learnt all those scales? I really want to try playing with jazz and boogie woogie but i just don't know how because i lack the theory knowledge.

Major scales are essential because if u know the scale of a key centre u have whats necessary to be able to play in that key and the formula to follow to play a major scale for any key is play a note skip a note the only time you don't skip is between the 3 and 4 and the 7 and 8 You know what is the anywhere else I can contact you from? I'll send a 3 page pdf I made for someone a while ago that would help get past a beginner stage
