In this video I react to a video by ROANAH where he shows his progress after 1 year of playing the piano. ROANAH learnt self taught but had some experience playing guitar and electronic music before.
Here is ROANAH's original video:

*I will not compare my progress. I will not compare my progress.* I think I agree, from personal experience anyway, that if I just wanted to memorize a piece I could easily repeat and remember what I'm supposed to play. I'm really trying to focus on being able to read and follow along with sheet music, because I feel it's a really important skill and will help me not only with the piano, but really anything I want to explore in music. This guy did a great job though, I'm so impressed! I find blues really hard to play because of the rhythms of everything. Awesome video, again! Thank you!

Can relate!! I feel like I don't really have problems when I read sheet music on (or slightly above) my level, which makes me thinking if I keep it up and might get to an advanced level, reading sheet music will then no problem either Same with Boogie Woogie, it's so fun to listen to, but not getting the same rhythm in both hands when it's supposed to be different, is eh yes we won't talk about it😂

Also, this guy had like 10 years of experience before, so don't compare you to him😂😂

@@katttttt my biggest problem with reading sheet music is it's all so small! My eyesight isn't the best so I find myself leaning over the piano to see the notes and then my rhythm gets all out of wack. 🤷‍♀️ I keep plugging away though! Increasing the size just adds more sheets and I haven't found a good way to turn the pages without also affecting my rhythm. One day at a time! It's definitely a skill worth the work, in my opinion. I had very little previous experience, other than briefly playing the flute in elementary school (a fair amount of time ago... Lol), so I try not to compare to others, especially the young prodigies that make it look so easy 🙃

Definitely never compare! Everyone’s approach is different and everyone’s strengths and weaknesses are different. For example, there are many that might not be able to play a blues improvisation as well, as Roanah has practiced that quite a bit by the looks of it. There are also many that could read a piece of music much faster and more accurately, have better technique and can play scales evenly etc. It depends on your goals, your natural advantages/disadvantages and what you optimise for, so its wise not to compare “how good at the piano” you are compared to others - because it’s not a linear skill, it’s a set of skills, but you can find inspiration in others playing if they have a skill that you would like to acquire 😊

@@matticawood thank you! I try and take into account that due to my lifestyle, and busy schedule with two young kids, it's hard for me to dedicate an hour or more a day to practice. While my progress might seem slower than others, I know as long as I don't give up that I'll get there eventually. I'm trying to approach learning in a balanced way with sight reading, dexterity, rhythm, aural skills, theory etc. Not comparing myself to others is hard, when I hope I can make it look so effortless to play one day. Currently I find it hard to keep pieces in my brain if I'm not actively practicing them. I know it's likely relative to each person, but how many times should one practice a piece to sort of solidify it? I can feel confident in a piece, but then go a week or two without playing it and seem to forget a lot.

yeah you could tell def a jazz / blues guitarist kind of guy that helped him since the guitar is 1 , 5, 7, 3 , he already knew the dropped or rootless voicings (if he knew the theory and not tabs)when he went to the piano. but then some coutner point stuff and than mozart alberti bass on a juno with no pedal purchase, effiency is mad.

In general I think the 1 year progress videos can be demotivating in the sense that most focus on pieces that were learned during a specific timeframe, not how many technique exercises etc. were done like a Rocky montage. With harsh KZbin comments and general judgement, I think there's also a certain survivorship bias with these progress videos where people upload the best performances, and the most "spectacular" growth videos are viewed and shared most. Getting your commentary on the fingering etc. is useful, since it puts it into perspective as it is not the first thing I look for as a relative beginner myself. I've had to take a step back and just reevaluate what I'm trying to achieve. I want to do all aspects, reading and theory, while learning good habits in terms of fingering and technique. So I've accepted my pace being my pace, and as an older starter accepted my current limits and just try to stretch them day by day.

I’m starting piano lessons at 32 having played guitar since I was 12 and singing as an operatic tenor. It’s hard having imbalances! I would say also, he’s using the piano more as a rhythmic tool rather than as a full instrument. Which is fine if that’s the music he wants to use it for.

Matthew, I've been wanting to get into the piano for the longest time. Your videos have helped me gain this obsession with piano, and I'm getting ready to purchase my piano. As a beginner with no prior musical experience, how would you tackle learning? My goal is to be able to read sheet music and perform some of my favorite pieces. What are some of the most important fundamentals to get down first? Thanks!!

Thanks! I appreciate that! If you haven’t seen my video “How To Start Learning The Piano - Self Taught”, then check that out…I outline where to start in that video. - kzbin.info/www/bejne/pmGTq6afbJanbKssi=kfbMpwIF2uLaMZlH My advice would be to start very easy and do lots of repetition. If you find something difficult, don’t avoid it - do more of it. Don’t use KZbin to copy someone else playing, learn it the hard way (reading or by ear) to practice training the skills that can apply to future music. Practice less than you want to for the first 90 days, if you can practice 30 minutes a day, do 20 minutes…so that you can sustain it when motivation dips. For fundamentals; structure your practice - - technique (scales/arpeggios/exercises) - sight reading (something you’ve never seen that’s easy) - pieces (something you are learning over a couple of weeks and can dig into) 😊

My advice would be to take whatever beginner book with fingering provided. It's hard to guess effective fingering as a beginner and my biggest issue was the jump from the beginner book to Musescore/online sheets. Otherwise, just practice daily. Hard or easy doesn't matter much. Daily practice is what counts. Hard pieces makes you explore new patterns. Easy pieces makes you automate fully and allow you to try to play with nuance. Both are good. Everything will allow you to progress. Keep a good balance between trying pieces you dream of playing but are too hard and beginner book songs that are less exciting to your taste. Practice, practice, you can't do anything wrong.

There are leveled books of classics like the Faber series and Masterworks Classics that will provide you with simplified versions of beautiful classical pieces that are appropriate to your level. Some you may find overly simplified, but some of them are just fine for feeling like you are playing classical music while building the skills you will need to play the full versions eventually. I have seen simplified scores for Für Elise, Gymnopediae 1, Minuet in G, and many other "beginner" pieces that are not really preparatory level AT ALL. Do make use of those simplified arrangements at first, which of course you may also find in your method books, and then the themes will already be in your hands and ear when the time comes down the road to play them "for real."

I would love to get some advice on how i can learn to read music so if you have any tips then i would be very grateful. Anyways great video as always.

Wow this guy progress for one year is amazing. Still could be a very interesting to hear from his playing maybe just one but WHOLE piece... As I understand he using KZbin learning clips, as flying notes or just slow down and copy, repeat, memorize, as I also doing... I'm 10 + month learning piano playing and never started seriously learning sight reading...was asking one guy (he 's playing about 3 + years with notes reading, about IF he can playing whole piece learned a year ago, he answers NO, have to Relearning piece (sure it will be faster, but still). So every single day I playing at least once (if makes mistake then repeating) ALL my repertoire I did learned from beginning (well , most favorited). What is your recommendation about going repertoire to memorize, because what reason to learning sometimes really technically difficult piece and forget it (definitely) . So mastering sight reading ONLY is the key or any advice from professional ? Thank you and sorry everyone for long story/questions.

Definitely from a classical music perspective would be super beneficial for him to learn to read music, write in fingerings, stick to them and count out loud. Seems like he's having a lot of fun jamming out and learning new skills which is awesome! It'd be cool if he tries all the Goldberg Variations :D Like you mentioned though some of the short cuts self taught pianists use may end up becoming a crutch or turn into bad habits down the line which is so difficulty to undo and really become quite troublesome when you hit a wall. By starting with a teacher you build a strong and well grounded foundation which can sometimes feel a lot slower and less rewarding. I guarantee 9/10 times once you get through that initial 1-3 years (Depending on how much you practice) you'll be grateful for it 10-15 years down the line! Even for people that really don't want to learn how to read sheet music or want formal guidance from a teacher seeking out someone just to get you on the right track with how to choreograph your fingers, knuckles, wrist, forearm , elbow, shoulder etc Knowing how to coordinate your hand movements with just enough tension and knowing how to relax that tension is night and day for playing fast and effortlessly and for people playing even on heavy action grand pianos there is a way to play for hours without soreness or discomfort :)

Day 171 it's interesting he tried to learn the Aria of the Bach "Goldberg Variations". Day 309 he is playing the Aria again with the addition of Var #1 after. Nice attempt but the note accuracy is not 100% When it comes to dynamics control depends on the instrument you're trying to simulate. In the 18th century Bach wrote his keyboard pieces for harpsichord or organ. Neither has dynamics control. When playing on a harpsichord, the focus is on articulation, note accuracy and precise rhythm like clockwork. If you play Bach on a piano like the Canadian pianist Glenn Gould, there is much more noticeable change in dynamics & phrasing making legato phrases more so with the use of the sustain pedal. If you get into a discussion whether you should use pedal playing Bach half the people in the room would say no since a piano is a substitute for a harpsichord which has no pedal. The other half would say yes for the tone color. Some pro pianists would use a pedal but not others. Wouldn't get everybody in the room to be on the same side...
@matticawood
@matticawood 3 ай бұрын
I’m definitely in the “no pedal” camp! 😊 Very much worth mentioning that phrasing with time and articulation rather than dynamics would be how it would be played on a harpsichord! 😊

From my noob view point this was technically impressive from a time scale perspective. But everything sound wise, came across as rather robotic. It sounded like a bunch of notes being played; Correct notes, but without any real rhythm (unsure if this is the appropriate word, and trying to avoid the word "soul"). Everything felt rushed and equal, even if it was in time.
