Today's video is a look at the story so far, how our tropical jungle garden build project has come together over the last year - it's definitely been a big garden transformation from a blank canvas! The late summer into autumn garden is a perfect time to see a lot of these exotic plants and colourful flowers at their best and look at what's grown and worked well this year. The growth rate and big leaves of the Gunnera Manicata are definitely a highlight!

WOW...I too have recently made a move, 4 hours away from my half acre tropical food forest in south central Florida, to North Florida where temps are quite different, but I packed up as much as this 72 yo granny could muster to replant in a much smaller garden...moving in winter even in Florida was quite the challenge, but plants are recovering after two hard frosts, slowly but surely the tree fern and banana are stepping it up...did I mention that I did this all by myself, still am, as the free mulch loads are being delivered...gardening is what keeps us growing as well, we are driven to these paradise of eye candy in our own realms of tranquility...keep up the awesome work, it's amazing!!!

Hi, yes, it's all about the effect and growing a lot of surprising tough plants, giving some a bit of protection from the worst freezes then adding some genuine summer tropicals to set it all off. This previous winter has been colder but on the whole most plants have bounced back really well!

@@GeorgesJungleGarden may I suggest an idea? Try to make it like a public garden where people pay a little entrance fee like 1 pound to visit. I am not talking about business I am talking about conservation. With the fee money you can add more plants or take better care of the plants. Obviously it costs money for irrigation and other things. I had almost same garden as yours but mine was wild not grown by me as I used to live on a tropical island. Making it a public garden will be your legacy for your hard work. In mine I made an open coffee shop and it was always full of families looking for a quiet and peaceful moment

Tree ferns of that size probably cost around 2000 pounds each, you need lots of money to build something like this and a gable too, you could have your expensive plants dieing on you in your weather. Looks amazing, well done
@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much. My larger tree ferns actually cost around 1/10th of that price but I did get them about 5 years ago and they’ve been growing outside in pots until we moved here. Anything less than 100% hardy is a gamble but with the right protection and care you can give them a very good chance of making it through cold spells like the ones we had earlier this year. They definitely get the respect and care they deserve, regardless of price ☺️

@GeorgesJungleGarden 2 жыл бұрын
@@sianjones5863 Oh right. Well it completely depends on the conditions but what I use hear to blur the boundaries are a lot of different plants, mainly evergreens and the key is to layer the planting I think rather than relying on just one plant, it looks more natural. There’s some nice Fargesia and Borinda clumping bamboos, the various Fatsia varieties work well, ×Fatshedera lizei looks the part too. In a sunny spot some of the bigger Euphorbias could work and then in summer you could have a lot of salvias or fast annuals like sunflowers. It honestly depends what grabs you and the effect you’re wanting to create rather than just using the plants as a screen.

@@sianjones5863 No worries Sian! There's lots of different Fatsia varieties too. You could also try grasses like Miscanthus giganteus but the issue is they're not evergreen so can look very scruffy for half the year. Great video George, I have total Gunnera envy. You talked about it being a hungry plant. This is our first year in our house and I have been battling poor soils. Chicken manure pellets as well as rotted manure have been my strategy to date. Its a clayish soil that goes bone dry in the summer. Any advice? I have been stocking up on bags of Blooming Amazing soil enricher and am intending to mulch the bed once the perennials start to die back.
@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much Gareth! It is a lovely plant and one that definitely grows a lot better here than our old drier garden. In all honesty you're doing the best single thing you can do. I added 2 or 3 pallets of farmyard / horse manures to our garden last winter, not cheap but it's definitely paid off. It seems to disappear by the summer but in reality it's not just the nutrients that help but the long term structural improvements to the soil, roots can sink into it easier and it holds onto water better. You definitely want to put a lot on the areas you're looking to target.

Thank you George once again inspirational work.!
@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! I'm very aware this is a 'highlights reel' of the best bits and there's a LOT of sections I didn't feature which need serious amounts of work but I'm happy with the progress so far. As for the Eucalyptus, yes, certain plants like Eucalyptus can produce allelopathic chemicals to inhibit the growth of others around, this combined with their thirst and size means in most natural environments other plants can struggle to grow around them. In a garden setting it's not something I'm too worried about, I use plants like phormiums and Euphorbias to grow in the zone closer to my Eucalyptus (they're tough!) and then the bananas and bamboos a bit further away will receive additional water and mulches to. The big Vivax bamboos will most have a barrier dug in next year anyway to prevent them from spreading but it will also keep my larger Eucalypus out. It's definitely a consideration you're right to think of but personally I've not let it put me off using them in my garden - ANY kind of large tree would also add to the competition for water and I already put up with several cherry trees and a big poplar next door!
