Great video & congratulations. Ajugas, Tricyrtis, Saxifraga 'London Pride' and Brunnera macrophylla also seem to really fit the tropical look and pair well with the plants you mentioned.

@@GeorgesJungleGarden yeh I've been going through most of your videos over the last few days. As someone who is pretty much a novice gardener I've picked up some nice tips so thanks for that! Just wondered, does that spot get sun in the summer or is it in shade all year? I just ask as that whole topic around full sun/shade confuses me a tad. The border I want to fill up, with these sort of plants, is north facing so gets very little sun in winter but gets quite abit in the summer.
@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden 6 ай бұрын
Thanks, I'm pleased you've got something out of them. This area has the fence to the south and the small wall to west so most of the plants don't see a lot of direct sunlight outside of mid-summer. Personally I think most plants can grow well in bright areas which are either semi-shaded or only see sun for part of the day / year. When it comes to proper dark, gloomy shade which restricts brightness significantly then you have to be a bit more selective with plant choices but there's a lot of plants which will cope with the conditions you describe just fine and I wouldn't worry too much. Everything in this little border would work for you no problem and in fact most of my garden is actually shaded by the larger trees next door.

I just recently discovered your channel and am watching it for tropical garden ideas. This spring I'm going to go for the tropical look by starting out with a hardy banana plants. I have already grown ferns, elephant ears, caladiums, and hardy hibiscus. Have you ever heard of the 'voodoo lily' or Dracunculus vulgaris? I have watched several tropical garden channels but no one mentions this plant. It's very exotic in appearance but can withstand temperatures below zero F. The drawback of this lily is that it smells like rotting flesh and will die back midway through the summer.
@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Hi and thank you! It sounds like you've got a great mix of plants. I grow the 'voodoo lily' yes, just one plant, and the leaves are unusual as well as the flowers. They do die back early but I probably planted mine too close to the Gunnera so it gets completely overshadowed! Well worth growing though and good luck with your spring garden plans!

I didn’t know Tradescantia and Spider Plants could grow outside in the UK year round. Would be interesting to hear how they have done?
@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, I don’t think the Tradescantia would survive winter outside but spider plants have the potential to in sheltered areas and milder winters. They’ve done OK but not enough water for a lot of growth - they’ll be coming out of the wall for winter anyway in this spot. You can see them at the start of my recent overwintering tour vid I think.

Hi Yvette and thanks for the offer, it was actually Sherwood Forest at Nottingham. The dead nettles you’ve got probably aren’t ‘tropical’ as such, the one I got isn’t either but if they fit in with the look then all is good in my book, especially when you’re looking for filler plants. Thank you very much Julie! Haha I've probably built it up too much now! I've mainly concentrated on the middle section of the garden, I realised I wasn't going to have a chance of finishing the fire pit area but the middle is coming together for sure. It's actually some wood chippings on the ground, cheap, quick to chuck down and it won't last forever so I can soon make modifications in future. It's frustrating that a lot of plants are so far behind but never mind!

Nice planting scheme. Love heuchera but I've found I need vine weevil nematodes in September otherwise they are decimated over winter. They are the only plants, in my garden, that get eaten in the open beds and not just pots. Your Manicata is awesome.
@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I've had that issue before with a couple of small heucheras but touch wood they generally seem to be OK these days. If I notice any issues, I'll definitely consider nematodes, thanks for the idea. The camera angle probably makes the Manicata look bigger but it's still an awesome plant!

Hi I was shopping at my plant nursery in Lancashire today, they've upped their prices since last year Fatsias £40 only 1 foot tall, and bananas £30, 2and half feet tall. This wasn't at an expensive garden centre. Tropical plants are so expensive, I've shopped around near me and even small plants have doubled in price I find. I bought 2 small bananas for £8 each last year.
@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden 3 жыл бұрын
A lot of things have definitely gone up, especially with the wholesales and growers that supply most garden centres. There's still bargains to be found but you have to shop around, that Fatsia does sound very expensive. They're less than a tenner at 2 garden centres near here and B&Q, £2.99 for plants just under a foot at another garden centre!

Hi and thank you! This one is under a tree so definitely half shaded or more in summer. In warmer climates shade will help as the big leaves don't like a combination or drier soil and direct sun. One they can cope with but both together and they might struggle.

George , could I please ask you some advise on heucheras , I grow many colours , very successfully , and have done division and multiplied them all except the yellow / gold ones , I have had a couple for many years now , and they slowly got smaller and are struggling , they are in a soil which has plenty of compost mixed in and I feed them regularly each spring and summer ,, and I’ve checked the roots for vine weevil and they are clear of them so I can’t understand why all the other colours thrive in the same conditions and the yellow/ gold ones struggle , . Ps , I even protect the yellow ones from frost with a pot stuffed with fleece as a cover for them . What is it I’m doing wrong or is it the plant . Thankyou in advance , hope you can give me an answer .
@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sylvie, I'm probably not qualified to give you a definite answer. Vine weevil is what I would have said originally but it could be as you suspect that some plants are just weaker than others. The red and green ones seem to bulk up well quite easily. I actually had some yellow-ish ones in our old garden that never did especially well, moved them to the back of a border at the new garden and even though they've not had any specific care they're grown so much better. Maybe being in more shade has helped, maybe it's a richer soil but I suspect it's as simple as more consistent moisture in their new location. None of mine get any protection, I leave them to it. Sorry I can't help massively but I'm probably say it's either the plants at fault (not your care) or that the yellow ones aren't as tolerant of a drier soil potentially...

I’m trying to get my gunnera seeds to grow but idk if I have to wait longer what but it’s the only plant to give me trouble growing

It’s not a plant I’ve grown from seed myself yet Joe but I’ve read it’s crucial to use fresh seeds, keep them moist and not handle them before planting.

Yep I handle gently with sterile gloves and keep moist all day with lights heat pads all of that and from my research it can take up to 90 days to sprout. It’s crazy how such a tiny little seed smaller then a sesame seed can grow such a mammoth plant but the one I ordered is doing good so hopefully they all turn out

@@Mrjboomseedco It is amazing how small the seeds are compared to the plant for sure, you’d expect them to have a seed like a large egg! Good luck and please let me know how you get on, I’m intrigued to find out 😃

Congratulations! Will there be enough space for that waggi? Do they like shade or prefer full sun? How tall do they get?
@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes, they're not hugely wide and get going upwards soon enough. Like a lot of Trachycarpus they're quite easy going so sun or partial shade is absolutely fine, this spot won't receive too much direct sun but equally it's not in full shade and as the plant gets taller it'll get more light. If you google pics you'll see they keep growing taller like a Fortunei, I don't know an ultimate height but they sometimes look a bit strange when they're very tall as they still have the small leaves! They tend to start off slow, grow faster as they're trunking then slow down again in maturity.

are spider plants hardy in your area?

We'll say half hardy in a sheltered spot but I might be able to tell you better this time next year!

a cheaper way to get ferns: dig up road side weeds.

As long as they're not rare and in the countryside then go for it! There are a lot of native ferns that would definitely fit the theme!

How is this part of the garden looking now? Would love to see it a year later with some more growth. Looks great here.

Thanks. To be honest it's struggled quite a bit with it being such a dry year. I suppose the only thing I'd probably change would be to just have one Fatsia but ultimately you don't know how each plant is going to develop and they are quite easily controlled. I do like the bright colours of the Heucheras etc for sure.
