I've had my IR Amber Harness now for 7+ yrs. Still going strong. I wore them everyday as part of my business casual attire. Covid hit and I now work 100% remote, so I don't wear them nearly as much, but when I do, I love putting them on and feeling the leather that has molded to my foot just perfectly. Great boot.

You know what I have noticed. When someone is wearing a small size in IR they never look big or bulbous. It's just the larger sizes that tend to look big and not well proportioned for tapered jeans etc. Also they get old better than bigger sizes. This is a rule for every pair of shoes generally especially the lighter someone is the less pressure on the leather and soles so the shape remains overall better. Great video!

agree, i'm 135 lbs, 5'6, 8.5 in IR, and they look pretty new even 7 months later if i clean them up. It just isn't physically possible to wear them down super fast being so light especially if you don't drag your feet at all. Even my soles are still pretty new looking

I have always been a "boot guy" and would buy a new lower-tier boot every year. Last year I finally took the plunge and bought the Iron Ranger. It has completely changed my boot game. Thanks to the IR and this channel, I now own the Grant Stone Diesel, (3) Beckett Simonons and have (4) new Grant Stones on the way in preparation for Fall and Winter. I have a bunch more that I am eyeing as well. In summary, the Iron Ranger is awesome, unless you like keeping your money.

I became an official Red Wing addict about three years ago and haven't looked back. The Amber Harness Iron Rangers were my first pair, and I have two others. For me, it's the best looking, most durable and comfortable boot out there. I'd tell anyone looking to invest in a pair that it's well worth it. Great video!

Can't think of a more universally loved boot. Got a pair a couple of years ago and normally finding shoes/boots that fit well is tough for me, I have pretty wide feet so most shoes ending up fitting a little oversized, the iron ranger though I could get in a size 9 instead of my regular 10/10.5 and they fit like a glove. Best pair of footwear I own without a doubt.

I have wide, flat feet and wonder whether I should go to ethe EE width. I tried a pair on in store and although it felt roomy in the toe box, I felt like I was standing on the crease of the Right inner boot. What do you suggest?

@@themoor5498 That's a good question. When I bought mine I didn't know aboutt the width options so have a D pair and at least after I wore them in, I don't have that problem. What I can say is most other shoes if I have to buy larger, my foot usually bulges out the side over time but his hasn't happened with the iron rangers. If I was aware of the wider options I probably would have tried them though so probably worth a try.

Nice video, I just bought my first pair of Iron Ranger in Copper February 2022, great structure, I can tell it will have a longer break in period, so I've been wearing them no longer than 3 hours at a time to avoid blisters. I can tell already I won't need another pair for a long time. For the average boot guy, it is an investment at the price point of $350. So far very happy with my purchase.

Got mine last week in R&T Copper. I've been a hard 9Wide(EEE) all my adult life in every shoe style, including boots, and since everyone said go at least a 1/2 size smaller I ordered 8.5EE. Sure enough, they were VERY snug and I was glad I didn't go a full size smaller as some advised. Wore them a couple of hours the first day and used some KT tape on a couple of rough spots on the insides and massaged the leathers there and it helped a lot. That night I put the stretchers in them to widen them slightly and by the end of the second day I forgot I had them on! I've worn them every day since and I would say they were broken in by the third day. I replaced the laces with some good leather ones and keep cedar trees in them at night. I just hope they last. So far - very comfortable and highly recommended!

Hello. I purchased a pair of Iron Ranger Amber Harness about a months ago and your right about the break in period. I sized down 1 and half sizes which was a bold move but so far so good. My sneaker size is 12 and I purchased 10 1/2. I did this because my first purchase was a pair of Iron Ranger Black Harness size 11 1/2. After approximately 6 to 8 months I had to wear thicker socks so they would fit. The boots definitely have the clown shoe look but I can still wear them as I wear them to work. Yeah on qualifying of build, leather quality, history, tradition, timelessness, and for a casual boot the Redwing beats Thursday. The only issue I have is it can't really be dresses up as well as some of the Thursday boots since they have the slimmer form factor and toe box, and some of them have the more muted eyelets and flat wax laces. I wish Redwing would unvault one of their dressier boot models again (Merchant?). Take my money.

Well said...I have a pair of Thursday Captains. While they are comfortable, my Iron Rangers and Blacksmiths have a completely different feel..The Red Wings feel far more substantial and become a better fit over time the more they're worn. Advice: keep shoe trees in when not being worn.

I have 2 pair of the IR’s. I’m still in break in phase, but they are getting there. The heel is kinda giving me some headaches, but generally they get a bit more comfortable the more that I wear them. I was wearing them in the beginning of our Minnesota Winter, but put them away thus far because it’s not a fun wear in a foot to 3 foot snow drifts. I’ll pick my process when the weather starts to taper down a bit. Great boots from a Great Wife. 😊

I bought My first pair of Redwings in Austin Texas while working at a wood shop. They lasted 4 years. I’m sure they would have lasted longer but I wore them until having them re soled was impossible. I bought a pair of the Iron Rangers today. I’m going to document the wear that I put on them. I’ve only been able to get 6 months to a year on other work boots I’ve owned. So if You get 4 years from a pair of boots that cost $350, you are paying less than a quarter per day to have amazing quality boots. And if cared for You will certainly get much more life out of them then I have in the past.

and you gotta realize too, that you described them as "work boots" so if you're in them things every day putting in a hard eight, that's a hell of a lifetime for a boot. Great video. I love my Iron Rangers, I have had them for a year and half and put over 500 miles on them. Breaking them in is a commitment but once done they are custom. The two cons that I have with them is the ride is not very soft and they do not hold in the heat.

I agree with you on all of your points. They are like bear traps on your feet while breaking in, they are not soft but they are very sturdy and they are not good for cold weather. I work inside so I do wear them all winter in Colorado. If I worked outside I would need a winter boot.

I was measured in store on their 3d machine and it said 11d. Tried some 10.5 first and my toes hit the end. Tried the 11d and they were perfect! The copper rough and tough looks awesome!

Solovair was all hype for me, my iron ranger's got me what I wanted in a pair of boots. For hiking and nature, Crispi shoes have delivered.

I wear chucks or similar shoes casually. For work, I have a pair of Red Wing Iron Rangers, and a pair of 10877's. I'm an aircraft mechanic. I'm on my feet all day, nearly every day. I've had my boots re-soled a few times, but I'm not disappointed that I spent $250+ on each pair of boots. YMMV, but I'll continue to buy and wear the Red Wing boots I have.

Got a pair of 8085s and I was actually scared of them, thinking my feet would rebel. But I gotta tell ya--no break in problems at all. I got 9.5, half a size down. Get measured on one of the Red Wing "magic sizing machines" if you can. It showed my high arches and specific pressure points as I walk and is a lot of fun besides.

I recently went into a Red Wing store in Maplewood, Minnesota wearing 10 EE logger boots and was told my foot size is 10.5 EE. My 10 EE Foreman's by Chippewa fit great. Sure would not want a bigger boot than what I am wearing and I would not want it any smaller either. I prefer a higher heel which makes me feel more nimble on my feet and helps my lower back feel much more comfortable as well.

Iconic style and build. Every boot guy will dig the IR. There are more dressy boots, there are tougher boots, there are more expensive boots and cheaper boots. These will last for many years with even a minimal amount of care. But, show them some love, and they will last a generation.

Stiffer the boot and harder the break in ,the longer the boot lasts. Case in point my Nick's Builder Pro boots were a pain to break in and are a joy to wear now after 2 years and I really can't say I've managed to break them in fully after that much time. The Amber harness leather on the iron rangers is a good 5 ounces and is relatively tough compared to those Thursday boots, plus it has natural materials , not poron and other rubbish that Thursday builds their boots with.

Just bought a pair of 8088 (wedge sole) in Amber harness, which apparently are hard to find now that I’ve been looking online for others with them. The store I was shopping at (Winterport Boot) has a great salesman that I talked with for a while about the boots. He told me redwing hasn’t been producing a lot of these so they didn’t have any in the classic sole like is shown here. I’m definitely going to order a pair direct from redwing when I have the money these are really nice feeling boots.

I measure 10D on the Brannock Device, with a low volume foot. For my IR's, I went down a full size (9D), and they fit great. Out of the box, they were pretty comfy, no heal slip, plenty of room in the toe box, no pinky toe squeeze. Initially, I went home with the mule skinners (they're really gorgeous), but an hour later I exchanged them for the amber harness. I know myself and the mule skinners would have quickly darkened.

As a larger guy (36x32) I'd say they fit very will with slim fit and tapered jeans. But not relaxed fit jeans. So overall Jean size has to be taken into consideration imo

I just purchased a pair. When buying them they said they would clean and condition them for life at the redwing store. Also, replace the laces for life. The last part was they will resole the boot for $100.00. Seem like a good deal. I had them for a week and they seem to break in fairly quick.

I have the 8111s and the 8085s. I love these boots. Just for some reference on sizing. I have the 8111s in 8.5 D. This size works well with thinner or dress socks. I have the 8085s in a 9 D. The 9s fit best with thicker wool socks, especially for the winter. Thicker socks wearing the 8.5s are too tight for me. Just my experience! The Moc Toe and Blacksmiths I have are in an 8.5 D as well and fit great.

@Ryder I personally like the look and feel of the 8085s better and wish I got those in an 8.5. The 9s create an extra toe crease in the cap because they are slightly too long. However, I like having the option of a winter boot with thicker socks. Maybe I’ll have to try an 8.5 EE to see how that feels with thicker/winter socks next time. When conditioning the 8085s, be careful what you use because that leather will darken (mine did) and the patina is less noticeable. The patina is why I like the 8085s better, but the 8111s are great as well and probably more suited for work and casual wear.

I have the redwing iron ranger. I agree with almost everything you said in your video except I don’t like the rubber sole. It is durable for sure but it’s too hard! I find myself wearing the Thursday President boot more than the iron ranger due to it’s more comfortable and better looking. The construction of the Thursday boot is as good as the iron ranger even though the leather is a little thinner.

I bought a pair of IR Hawthorne Muleskinner about 2 weeks ago. They are still sitting in the box as I watch IR reviews in an attempt to convince myself to keep these Iron Rangers. I already have issues with my feet, back, and knees; and the thought of enduring more pain in order to break in a pair of IRs is disheartening. Is there somebody out there living with feet, knee or back pain that can tell me of their experience with the break-in process in Iron Rangers? Are they worth keeping?

I have them in Hawthorne Muleskinner. Great boots, though I prefer the Blacksmith (I have copper r&t and charcoal). I posted a Blacksmith review on Red Wing's website (now on page 2) with photos to help with sizing (same size in IRs). I went down a full size, but I have a thin foot (normal width). My Thursday Cadets are dainty by comparison. I say save up for the Red Wings over buying cheaper. I tried the Chippewa Aldrich as well. Nothing wrong with it (built for a high volume foot in my opinion), but the difference in quality is apparent. I don't do selvedge jeans, but they're great with bootcut Levi's.

I love my Iron Rangers and Blacksmiths. It is a classic for a reason. TBC makes pretty good boots. I have two complaints. The elevated heels cause my foot to slide forward, which is problem walking downhill. The heels make the boots a little clunky on level ground. The TBC version of a Danite sole has studs that protrude slightly. This means you are walking on the studs when the boots are new. This makes the sole actually quite slippery on polished stone floors, and other smooth surfaces, until you wear them down. Go for their Rugged and Resilient soles, or the few models with actual Vibram soles. I have had the heels lowered, which makes the boots MUCH more comfortable. But, the cost of the boot and having heels lowered is equal to the cost of the Iron Ranger. So, I would recommend the Iron Rangers over TBC any day of the week. Much better soles, an no clunky heels.

I suggest you wear a few hours a day for first few days bring another pair of boots. Change after your feet start feeling pain. Do that until it feels better. Probably week or two. Also use mink oil.

I think the bulbous toe cap is just a signature it’s unique and I love it it never really bothered me when wearing slim cut pants and jeans but then I do have huge legs so 😆 Squat and never skip leg day people!

After getting my custom T1 commanders from Frank's, I'm going to be hard pressed to go with an iron ranger for my cap toe service style boots. I'm so impressed that I'll be hard pressed to order from anyone other than Frank's unless i get a viberg 310 last, a Wesco engineer, and im in the air on cowboy boots, but tecova has some leathers I really like, and a few other brands I've seen I like, but custom cowboy boot can be insane like I've seen a few businesses more expensive than viberg, and I'm really wondering aside from decorative stitching how can they be so expensive? They ain't built to be tanks like a NW boot, and most the exotic materials are offered cheaper elsewhere, so I figure some of them are namesakes price gouging, and I'm a man who doesn't like ripped off.

Next time try going a full size down. You have to tough it out for a much meaner break in. However you don’t have to worry about the toe dropping or leaving a shoe tree in at all times.

Finally, amber harness. People seem to like the copper rough and tough more. I have both and mostly wear the amber harness. I feel like a cowboy in the c r&t.

£300 in the UK is a lot to swallow, but if you have them for 10+ years, they work out at £30 a year to own. For me, that’s better than spending money on a £100 boot and having it for 2 years. The best part is the iron ranger is rebuildable and you don’t have to send them back to Red Wing. Any trusted cobbler can do a good job putting them right. I loved them so much, I got another pair in black for work and work in the rail industry so I’m on my feet all day conducting trains. They are super comfy but can run on the cold side when the weather is cold so put thick socks on or 2 pairs

They get so comfortable. So worth it. Had to go down 1.5-2.0 sizes as suggested by most, and fits like a glove.

I have never heard anyone say to go down one and a half or two sizes I wear 11 and i went down to 10.5 and they fit perfect No way could i wear a 9 or a 9.5.

I walk about 15 miles a day for work. Big box retail management…. I wear down boots in about 6 months usually. After much deliberation I bought a pair of these today. I normally wear added insoles to any shoe i wear, do to high arches and just for added comfort. Are there any insoles you could recommend? I intend to wear these everyday to work, after the insane break in period…. Lol

Red wing steel toes are awesome, especially when you opt for tough toe, you are right about break in time, they bite somewhat somewhere for about three weeks, however they become so comfortable and outlast cheaper boots crazy. Buy once, cry once. So yeah I watched your review, because I am interested in a pair of Iron Rangers.

If anyone is reading these comments, I think these boots are so worth it. I wasn’t a bit of a bind trying to convince myself to drop that much on boots, but considering how much I’ve dropped on other shoes, I finally went for these after a few years of seeing them, and now I’ve owned them for a year barely wore them, but in the last three weeks, I started wearing them more and my girlfriend likes them so that’s a plus. I was there a half size down that was at least my experience and they fit very well and have a bit of wiggle room for your toes very worth the $350 but just consider that you will want to get Choucair products along with buying these like the cedar shoe trees as well as leather conditioners are mink oil. All in all these boots are something that feels like you were going to have for a long time and I don’t mind the investment in stuff like that. I just wish they made these in a little bit higher of an ankle so they felt like combat boots

Lesson learned on RWs is always go to the store to get properly measured. Personally going 1/2 size down was terrible advice for me.. The EU and US sizes are very odd conversion in RWs.. I am a US12 (EU46) and I kept buying Red Wings (RWs) 1/2 size and sometimes a full size US11.5 (EU45) down online. Anyway, the break in with every pair of RW's were truly awful, as my feet rubbed and could not get on with them at all. This was very frustrating as i love their shoes..I would have to resell them on eBay etc. Eventually, I went to the RW store to get properly measured, and they recommended a US11 (EU44) in Iron Rangers and EU44.5 in Moc Toes. This is 1.5 to 2 times smaller than my usual size. The Iron Ranger's for me especially, then were fairly comfortable out the box, and within 2-3 weeks was pretty comfortable to wear all day.
