@xnessa282 Hi, IUPAC try to make the names as short as possible and unambiguous (unique for each molecule) - 1-methyl propane is not really wrong, but it is not the shortest name - butane is. Butane is normally draw straight unless we are trying to trick you - hehehe. try this: 1-methyl, 1-methyl,1-methyl,1-methyl methane - yuk - what is the IUPAC name?

The longest chain is to be considered as a straight chain no matter how twisted or turned it is. BUT, if by any chance the compound forms a cycle, you and "cyclo- " before the name.

Since it is an unbranched chain, then it is simply butane. If it was a branched chain it would have been a different story. For it to be 1-methylpropane then it would have to be a branched chain, meaning that the methyl group would have to be attached to the carbon atom in the middle of the three carbon atoms forming the propane chain. Think of an unbranched chain as there only being one path to follow when looking at the carbon atoms, and for the branched chain as there being an intersection at some point in the chain, which means you can either go one way or the other.

At 1:19, wouldn't it just be methylpropane without a number since once you put the methyl group on either Carbon 1 or 3 that would result in the molecule becoming butane?

I don't quite understand how the numbers are based and how to identify methyl and dimethyl

Find the longest carbon chain. Number the carbons from the end with the most branches, halogens etc. Now when you have a branch on that chain you must use the number to identify it. eg 2/methyl, says there is a methyl group on the 2nd carbon of the longest chain. Dimethyl is if there are 2 methyl groups present, trimethyl is three etc.
