There is a theory, and I think it holds up, that the next avatar must fix the biggest problem or failing judgement caused by the previous avatar. Having seen some of Katara now, what do you think Aang’s biggest failure was that Korra might have to fix?

There is a few comics of the fourth book, Air, that they never made into the show. It mostly deals with the aftermath of the war, the fire nation colonies in the earth kingdom, Ang attempting to revive air nomad culture, and also a whole story arch of them going to find Zuko mother which is very interesting. i would recommend to check those comics out. Its only a few books.

To remember at the Azula scene, she is still only 14 years old. This is not a defeted adult but a broken child who never really stood a chance at a normal life. The music is no mistake, this is not a glorious victory but a tragedy, another life destroyed by Ozai.

@@Matyunkin. Well 14 was definitely a marrying age in the era Avatar is set in. Game of Thrones does it best, as Cersei has to basically wait to marry Sansa to her son until after she ‘flowers’. In that era, once a girl ‘flowers’, she is basically an adult. It’s a much crueler era in almost every way. I do love that the Avatar can be male or female. I feel that’s so important. So crucial.

@@CimmerianAssassin truth but i think over the many times ive rewatched it, Aang sort of earns it. He pushes against the entire world and his own past lives to not kill Ozai, and he holds onto that belief and is rewarded by the lion turtle for it. I think that thinking about the lion turtle as this primordial entity (which it kind of is, its older than the avatar cycle) then its an easier pill to swallow. I think it IS a deus ex machina but not one that is rewarded unjustifiably if you get what i mean - I think of it as a divine entity finding him and rewarding him for his strength and belief in saving others. A lot of people sleep on how much Toph grew in this series. When we met her, she wantes to be independent, as she said " I carry my own weight", seh didn't need help. But in this last episode, she truely rely on her friends. Soka points in the direction of the airships and she just launches them there, Sokka has to pick her up, at the end of it all, she literally puts her life at the hands of Sokka. That is just another Toph than the one we met
@hazer5397
@hazer5397 Жыл бұрын
I genuinely think that Toph's growth isn't as impactful as the others because she is an already fully realized person.. She wavered sometimes but the only thing she needs is another perspective (ex: a talk with Iroh, a talk with Sokka, etc) to solve her problems. In terms of finding who she really is, she's done that long ago. She is the same capable and independent brat that she is from the start of second book to her Korra appearance, she just doesn't shy away and finally accepts any kind of help now. Her existence is a good contrast for the team as she's the only fully realized individual and she's been a bending master the longest as well.. That's why her arc and growth felt weaker than the others, she's already an established character.

@@hazer5397that's pretty much how I feel about it. I'm okay with Toph not having a major "arc." She doesn't need one. She's already everything she wants and needs to be, so she doesn't have a major journey to take. It's also a neat pointer to her being the "rock" of the group. She's the solid foundation. When everyone else is unsure, she's always the one to chirp in with "well here's the level headed and obvious solution" and they're all like "hmm that's actually a good point"

Azula’s descent started at the betrayal of Mai and Ty Lee. A very subtle detail is in the very next episode. When Azula and Zuko are fighting on top of the airship, she uses her fists to firebend when she’s only ever used two gentle pointing fingers. THIS is how you write a show.

Maybe we watched 2 different shows but Avatar is EXTREMELY POLITICAL. First off the entire world is Asian/Native coded, there’s not a single westernized/white character, so it’s not your typical American series to begin with. Boiled down its essentially an anti-war/ anti- fascist/ anti-right wing authoritarian commentary. There is zero difference between Ozai and right wing leaders like Stalin and Hitler. One used gas chambers and one used firebending… That commentary also extends to Aang who at the end of the day always chose, peace, love, equality, and respect over violence, war, bullying, and hate. It’s really shocking that all these years later and people still aren’t understanding how this show mirrors are actual world SO MUCH. This show definitely leans toward the left of the political spectrum and I wish more people would recognize how intentional that was. The lessons learned from Avatar could be applied to our every day lives.

Considering how much he despised the unpredictability of his own element, it led him to have an iron grip control over it, which would have been so cool to see more of. The two main things we see are his effortless flying and his "walls" of fire that don't actually directly burn or melt the target

@cynicreviewer
@cynicreviewer 3 ай бұрын
Yes, and I’m strongly inclined to believe Ursa knew and felt massive regret and guilt by the fact that she had a far more comfortable and trusting relationship with Zuko than Azula. Two things point this out clearly: 1. Ursa asks Zuko about Azula’s well-fare , when he finds Ursa in the comics taking place after the season 3 finale in the tv series. It’s very clear that Azula never left her mind and her desperation to be reassured that her daughter had a good life despite living with her failure to protect Azula from Ozai’s narcissistic influence. 2. During Azula’s psychotic break when she was hallucinating the conversation about her, pay very CLOSE attention to what Azula’s words are: “What choice do I have? fear is the only way, trust is for fools….even you fear me” This is what Azula has been telling herself from a developmental age to protect her feelings of hurt and perceived rejection from her own mother. Feelings like that in a development age for a child are not just agonisingly painful but damaging to their psyche and connection with community no matter how strong, smart, or gifted that child is. But because she is deep down strong, gifted, and has been both as a survivor to her own demons and as an enemy against Zuko and the avatars gang, as a kid her ego and will to not live brokenly latched on to her fathers messages of “happiness=power to destroy and spread fear, weakness=peace, trust, true connection and love with other human beings” Azula had to tell herself as a little kid, that the reason her mother hurt and rejected her was because she was afraid of her and her father’s greatness. BUT this not only isn’t the real truth, but Azula KNOWS it isn’t the real truth on a sub-conscious level. When she gets to the “…even if you fear me” part, her image of her mother immediately challenges the narrative by expressing upfront love for her, and Azula emotionally falls apart and breaks the mirror because the delusion she had to produce to survive her childhood was being exposed by her own IMAGE AND MEMORY OF HER MOTHER. Remember, the real Ursa isn’t in this room having the conversation with Azula, this is an image of Ursa being produced by Azula’s internal conflict which is currently in such a state of discord and trauma that her true memories, her worst fears, her ego projections over her own identity, the world, the nature of friendship and why she doesn’t feel she deserves it are smashing into each other. Which means in order for Ursa’s genuine love for her to be Azula’s fear fuelling her trauma thoughts, that MUST mean on some level Ursa displayed loving behaviour towards Azula that conflicted with her perception of herself being emotionally feared and hated by her own mother. My personal opinion is Ozai put EVERYONE in that family unit through hell, and Ursa wanted to foster a loving relationship with Azula, but she was overwhelmed and probably being hurt by Ozai at the same time and Azula was the child he no doubt started grooming earlier. Ozai most likely prevented any efforts from Ursa to get close to her daughter, and when her daughter would ask Ozai why Ursa wasn’t spending time with her, it would’ve presented ozai an opportunity to brainwash her. We see the effects of him grooming Zuko in Zuko’s journey as well, but the grooming was far less effective than what he achieved with Azula because Zuko had some positive family relationships early in his life to shield him. Everyone in that family unit shows the effects of childhood trauma affecting their mental health in various shades of psychological disorders. Zuko (cptsd), Azula (EXTREME cptsd, borderline personality disorder, strong narcissistic and sociopathic tendencies), even Ozai shows psychological trauma to an even darker extent than both his children (malignant narcissistic personality disorder, full-scale psychopathy) the man felt zero difficulty with murdering his own father, clearly showing that positive childhood relationships weren’t just scarce in his life like Azula’s but completely absent (ok this last paragraph was total headcannon from me I admit 😅) @@chocolatevanillaswirlwithc9901

Oh, man, witnessing Azula's desperate screams is truly heart-wrenching. I sincerely hope that wherever Azula ends up, she finds some peace and tranquility. In Zuko's case, his exile turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to him. Individuals like Zuko and Azula require separation from their toxic environment in order to embark on a journey of healing, both mentally and physically. I genuinely wish that Azula will be granted the same opportunity at some point (Not looking at you comics). Whether or not Azula is suitable for redemption is a separate discussion, one that often divides the ATLA fandom. A significant factor in this debate is whether Azula's behavior was a result of her nature or nurture. Undoubtedly, Azula has committed numerous reprehensible acts in the name of an imperialistic nation. However, it's crucial to acknowledge that, at the end of the day, Azula is merely a fourteen-year-old girl burdened with a father who helped create an environment where Azula believes that she is unable to be loved and therefore her only means of control is to be feared.

Fact that I've seen MANY reactions miss, including you: Zuko DID redirect the lightning. When Iron taught him, he explained that the lightning needs to be lead through the gut and out the other arm, and it can't pass through the heart. For that, they need to be grounded and focused! Zuko was mid-air when he got hit by the lightning, which caused the lightning to go through his heart instead of his gut. BUT, at 25:34 as soon as he hit the ground you can see the lightning leave through his arm and right after that, there's a shot of the lightning going upwards to the sky! Zuko didn't die because he redirected it while he was mid-air, but still got hurt by it.

I think it's something along the lines of Aang accepting Ozai, in a sense. He chose to stand by his belief that all life is sacred, and looked at Ozai in the same light, hence Aang looking directly at Ozai when he overcomes Ozai's energy. Even when Ozai threatens to corrupt Aang fully, Aang refuses to shift his belief that someone as evil as Ozai deserves to be given a chance, and THAT is what makes him pure. It's the ultimate benevolence.

fun fact: even though it's not so fun, azula's voice actress (grey delisle) still has not seen the finale episode. it's kind of traumatic for her since she had to think of things to trigger that kind of emotion (I heard but can’t confirm this). she recorded it by herself and was screaming and crying in real life. also, how are you going to say azula is worse than her dad? 💀 just some extra pieces: i think people tend to forget or not realise that in the scene where sokka is holding onto toph, he is the only thing she can feel. and to feel her hand slipping and hear him say "it looks like this is the end" must of been terrifying for her. zuko did actually redirect some of the lightning but also took some of it. you see it shoot into the sky at 25:38 . a lot of people theories that the reason ozai pulls that expression is because he was shocked that zuko kept his promise in joining the avatar and teaching him firebending. since he had never seen that technique done, aside from when zuko did it to him, so he knows zuko must have taught him that. i think the placements of aang and zuko's scars is interesting. as aang's is on his back, and he used to run away. and zuko's is on his chest, as he used to run head first into things. aang uses 2 moves to save his life that zuko and toph taught him: seismic sense and redirecting lightning. and the final bending move showed is aang pushing and pulling the ocean, which is the first move katara taught him to do - push and pull the water. the first word spoken in this series that's not in the intro is sokka saying "it's," and the last word spoken by toph is "perfect," which i think sums up the show perfectly.

Avatar will forever hold a special place in my heart! I was right in the targeted age range of the show when this came out and quite literally grew up with the show. When most of the other cartoons on TV were purely episodic, ridiculous, and treated it's audience like children, Avatar brought a sense of maturity and respect that I didn't realize that I was starving for in my entertainment. It really set the bar for the shows to come after😍

Azula's last scene always makes me cry. It is so amazing and feels so real. Azula descent into madness all begins with mai and ty lee turning on her, remember her only 2 friends betrayed her (good to us but a betrayal to her) then her dad refuses to let her go out and help on the most important day in there lives, she is feeling the abandonment then banishes people before they have the chance to betray her In the first scene of the last episode when you see toph tearing up you have to imagine just how petrified she is, she is a 12 year old child hanging there unable to see anything at all, the only thing she knows is sokka has hold of her hand and he tells her this is the end.

Iroh not making use of his power actually fits his character and creates a nice parallel between him and his brother. His brother states “I have all the power in the world,” and Iroh likely could too, but he chooses to stay on the sideline and repay his debts to the earth kingdom. Fighting is not how he makes use of his power anymore, he is a leader that brings the rebels together and allows the new generation of benders to take over.

What makes it sadder is there is a question how much it was her choice. Ursa had made it clear even when children she had a focus on zuko. Azula was aware of this on some level with her “my own mother thought I was a monster”. She felt rejected by Ursa and sought approval from Ozai because he was the one rewarding her behavior. She’s still a child and the one primarily focusing her moral compass, is Ozai. Zuko was lucky he had access to Iroh to help recorrect his path with his reinforcement of Zuko’s kindness and consideration of others.

I recently realized that the water bending move Aang used to finally catch Ozai while he was in the Avatar State at the end of their fight was similar if not the same as a move he used while practicing with Katara at the start of The Cave of Two Lovers when she's teaching him about the octopus stance. A water tendril wrapping around the leg and then grabbing. Even Aang's hand movements were similar.

This last 2 episodes are 1000 rewatchable!... All kind of thoughts comes to mind in apreciation of this journey with Spartan and Pudgey, thru the Avatar animated series... They really did learn to control and master "reaction bending", in a good way of course!... All i have to say is thank you for all of your deep reactions in all episodes!... Thank You for the experience of trying to recapture certain emotions for those who already knew how good this series was!... cult following series like Avatar are always a good bet, in lots of different ways, either from the metrics stand point or even the comunity that is seduced into your channel!... Since the 1st episode, "Sozin's Comet" is what i have been waiting, looking to see the validation and shared experience on how good Avatar is!... Great Journey indeed! Top level emotional reactions indeed, an exemple on how to do it for others who do it in a lesser way! Go Pudgey! Go Spartan!...100k goal is next, and both deserve higher numbers after that!... Anyway, Avatar gave its contribution, and that is great, because and altought with many flaws and far from perfect, it is indeed a special series where the aesthetics are dificult to judge! We all grew into cynical analytical persons, and the world isnt easy many times, but sometimes... Its nice when we feel what Anton Ego feels when tasting the ratatouille soup variation made by Remy in "Ratatouille "... Thank you for recapturing that "light in the box" emotions of Avatar that some of us forgot!

Something really cool to see is that while Zuko is fighting Azula you can see how his travels and knowledge have effected his battle style and he's not only calmer but his moves reflect that of all four types of bending. In an earlier episode Iroh was teaching Zuko about bending and told him how mastering all four elements doesn't just make the avatar stronger but can also make him stronger. This was a nice nod to that and really showed Zuko's growth in battle and character.
@DiscusvissenRocken

it is also because he has learned the original way of firebending and thus isn't relying on anger anymore allowing him to have far better control. him hving an entire team behind him also is a huge help. meanwhile Azula is facing the exact opposite emotional state: she is all alone and is starting to realize her father doesn't care about her and she also is starting to realize fear and intimidation is NOT the best way and actually leaves you alone and vulnerable when it really matters and this is tearing her apart from the inside. in the end Azula is a 14 year old teen girl with the same emotional abusive upbringing as Zuko, but unlike him she bonded with the wrong person: her father.

Zutara is very delusional imo. The creators to this day maintain that they viewed every interaction as friendly. Its OBVIOUS that it was always gonna be aang and katara, literally since episode 1. Katara even has moments where SHE EXPLICITLY is shown to want aang, specifically the cave of two lovers. Idk how anyone can even think zutara was a posibility.

@aquele4virou3
@aquele4virou3 Жыл бұрын
Opposites attract is a cliché and also a lie. You can’t really be with someone that opposes everything you are, you would be clashing too much. I love that Katara was able to forgive Zuko’s betrayal in the cave, and that they became friends, but they showed that they bring the worst in each other (his incentive for her getting revenge), and ultimately, while you can forgive for the past, you don’t forget. They are too different, they would clash and probably use the past to one up each other. People like them because of the common nice, cute girl and the hot, bad boy, enemies to lovers vibe, and sure, works for fanfiction, but in a serious arc, it would just be toxic. Also, Aang and Katara are still kids, I think romance wasn’t even necessary and I’m glad it wasn’t the focus most of the time. It’s an innocent blooming love for now, we never got to see them as a real couple to see how the chemistry was. But their relationship was build on trust and love since the beginning.

24:08 : the reason this battle is so sad is because it's not the great and perfect hero who comes to take down a vicious tyrant in a glorious and legendary fight. It's the inevitable, messy, vicious and heart-breaking clash of two messed-up teenagers whose terrible respective childhoods left them broken and set them up to be against each other and try to murder each other. Ozai really is one of the worst fathers in fiction. Also notice how Zuko's firebending greatly improved ? Iroh's teaching came to fruition when he encouraged him to learn from other bending techniques to become stronger : - during the battle he stays on the same spot, blocks and takes Azula's attacks head on, like an earthbender - his moves became more fluid and he switches from defense to attack like a waterbender, not to mention lightning redirection - he also throws in some dynamic jumps and moves like an airbender to give his fire more speed.

I still remember when I first watched this, I was practically kneeling in front of the TV, and I was so upset when Aang had the Firelord pinned and said it was time for him to pay 'the ultimate price'. I was so upset that Aang was going to have to go against everything in his mind and heart, and would kill the Firelord. I was scared that in order to save the world, Aang would have to lose himself... essentially what the conversations with the past Avatars had insinuated. Even the final Avatar he spoke to said the world was more important than his 'spiritual journey'. The idea of Aang being broken, but the world being healed... I was crying. So this was an absolutely wild resolution and I thank the show's creators every time I see this finale and realise they cared about the character's arc this much.

I think the most telling scene in regards to Azula was "You can't treat me like Zuko!" She spent her whole life trying to avoid falling out of favour of Ozai because she's watched how Zuko has been treated. What a terrible family.

I love that Zuco and katara had a sibling relationship. Because it was kind of like the sister he should have gotten but didn't. In fact, if you can trust katara's family situation with zucos, you see how different they were raised. She had a loving father who could not be available, and a brother that she fought with but loved. Alternately, zuko had a father and sister who couldn't stand him.

38:43 I love seeing the genuine fear on Ozai’s face. Now he knows what it’s like to be defenseless and at one’s mercy.

I feel you pudgy, zutara could have been a powerful path to take but I think it may have distracted from the main story they were trying to tell

I always recommend anyone who loved this series to continue with Legend of Korra. It's not nearly as emotional and loved as atla but it is still definitely worth a watch

39:38 The lionturtle says, 'To bend another's energy, your own spirit must be unbendable' Aang received this knowledge and visit from the lionturtle, Aang of all Avatars, because Aang remained true to himself - he didn't allow his spirit to bend, no matter what other people said. Even his past lives couldn't convince him to stray from his own path - he will not kill the Firelord.

Congratulations on finishing ATLA! :) Now you know why it is THE BEST animated series ever made, bar none, still to this day! Very hyped to see you get into Korra's story next, and hopefully all the new series, animations and movies that will be coming out in the coming years.

If Azula was mentally stable, Katara and Zuko would have been gone. Even Iroh admitted lmao

This finale is one of the best I've ever seen on any show. Everything was perfect. And don't worry Pudgey! A lot of fans wanted Katara and Zuko to end up together. Thanks for the great reaction!

I'm pretty sure the ending dilema of Aang having to choose between saving the world and his pacific ways are actually the orginal idea for the show. I think the writers woke up one day saying : "What if we had a chosen one story arc with the chosen one being non-violent?" And from there, they got inspired by the Shaolin Monks philosophy. And following that, they got interested in other martial arts and their philosophy and created the core of the show. This is such a great storyline, such a master piece!

In my personal opinion this is one of the greatest finales for any show. Wraps up everything and finishes out the journey. As for Azula, this episode is where I think most people begin to like her. This and ember Island are the only times that the writers actively remind you that this girl is exactly that. A young girl who has been broken by her upbringing. Especially when thinking of Zuko who has a similar story but her never getting the chance to redeem herself. It just makes you incredibly sad for this poor broken girl. Also hate to be the bearer of bad news but considering the avatar cycle being reincarnation based, Aang has passed by the staff of Korra. I won’t comment on the others though. It was a pleasure watch g you guys through this journey, onto the next

39:31 idk if anyone notices, but the fire/air blast didn’t come from Aang. It was ozai blowing a comet fuled fire blast at close range right at Aang, and he just dispersed it with his air bending. Shows how powerful of an air bender he really is.

"They did not deserve to exist in this world, in my world. Prepare to join them, prepare to die!!" This is coldest villain line from animation history as far as I can remember

I can't believe it's over. I think many of us when this first released had the same experience. The whole entire family had to get together on the couch just to see how this would end in the four part finale. I don't think there'll be anything else like it.

The voice of Ozai is Mark Hamill, otherwise known as Luke Skywalker. He really can have a menacing voice between this performance and Joker
