As an old man, I have to say we had old school 513T's and others that shot in the .2-.3's way back when. I still own one of those old 513T's, and with CCI Standard, it still shoots 50yd groups that are completely covered with a dime. Heck, I have an old Remington 541 that shoots 50yd groups in the .3-.4's, and even with CCI MiniMag HP, it stays in the .5" and below. An old friend of mine had one of the last years production 513T's, and in the 1980's, we drilled and tapped it for scope mounts, added a 6-20x target scope, and it was an exceptional prone match shooter. Also, we used that rifle for "bottle cap" competition, which was shooting white plastic soda bottle caps at 100yds. Years ago, I bought a Green Mtn 20" bull match barrel for my 20 year old 10/22 stainless 22" rifle, hand inlet the barrel channel, completed a trigger stoning, added a 6-9" bipod, and it shoots every bit as good as most modern high dollar builds I have seen. At that time, the barrel was around $89.

On of the things I do when I shoot groups is dial up or down a half mil after I confirm my zero. That way I'm not shooting a big hole into my point of aim. It has really helped shrink my groups since I'm not floating my point of aim. Great videos man.

Totally makes sense. I seen where iron sight shooters use a six o'clock hold so they can see their target at distances. For shooting paper, this makes a lot of sense. Thanks for sharing.

I had to sub to your channel because you take the heat that comes from the 10/22 fan-boys. Don't get wrong, I have a 10/22 too, and I started playing with them in 1987 before all the after market goodies; and the goodie today are great! But..., let me tell you a story: I got out of the Corps in 1986 and moved back home in So. California where all my friends were into fire arms, and .22 were no exception; people had kids and everyone had .22 rifles along with every fire known to mankind. I was the first guy in our circle of friends to buy a 10/22, a 'Deluxe Sporter,' at that time. I also found a Winchester 52B target rifle in a local pawn shop with no sights. It was set-up to use Redfield Olympic peep sights, which took some time to find back then. Over the years that 52B has beaten more kids with their hopped-up scoped 10/22's then you can shake a stick at - they just can't wrap their heads around how an open sight rifle can beat them. At any rate, I got to playing with that 10/22 in 1987 and came to the same conclusion you have come up with - the 10/22 platform can only achieve a certain level of accuracy, and you can not spend more money to wring anymore out of it regardless of the depth of your pocket. In 2015 I walked into the local gun shop and saw a 10/22 model 1150 - Dang, it was the same thing I bought in 1987! I missed that old rifle, so I bought it and did just what everyone else does today - put all the goodies in it. I put Kidd guts in it along with his single stage trigger and Tech Sights on it, and it is still only a minute of beer can rifle at 100 yards. The fun factor is off the charts with the 10/22, and I don't miss a dime I gave to Tony Kidd. I have always been an open sight guy, but to each their own in the 10/22 world. This rifle brings back more memories than I swat away with both hands. Now, about two years ago I ran across an article about Al Freeland's Tack Drivers, it was mostly about his BSA Martin rifles; I about fell out of my chair when I saw my Winchester 52B in that article that I bought all those years ago in that pawn shop; I paid $425 dollars for it and have about $675 total into it. I have since been able to run down documentation that Eric Johnson barreled the action for Al Freeland and who the rifle was made for out of Uncle Al's shop in Rock Island, Il. And to think that a little 10/22 purchase sparked so much passion in me about the shooting sports. I hope you pass this passion on to others better than I did over the years. Good luck on you channel, and I look forward to seeing more content from you. I am still working on things, and have more to say, but enough is good enough for now. On to the next Caper,

I appreciate the comparison video, all my builds have the same methodology applied. The "name recognition" equipment is not important to me whatsoever but I do appreciate the "fit and finish", if you can "budget build" equipment that performs as well as "high dollar", why do so in todays economy. To clarify... my term "budget" does not include inferior quality equipment. Analysis type work is required to attain budget quality that performs.

Good video. I built up a stock Ruger 10/22 with Green Mountain barrel, upgraded Ruger trigger on Magpul stock. Gave it to my Dad (near 90 years old) shoots MoA-1.5MOA groups at 100yards. I then built a Kidd, reciever, barrel, bolt and 2 stage trigger which I consistently shoot MOA - groups at 100 yards. Fun firearms. But like you seemed to have experienced. Both are ammo sensative.

Great Video! My "budget" gun wears a shaw heavy barrel ($100). It is my 2nd most accurate rimfire behind an anschutz 1712 silhouette. The accuracy surprised me because it was a pretty loose fit into the receiver- so much so I would shim it if it didn't shoot consistent .25" 5 shot groups at 50. My Green Mountain sporter contour barrel is also very accurate- .3-.4" groups at 50yd That one I had to put in the freezer to get it to insert into the receiver.

I found out what you just did 20 years ago. After putting together a dozen or so 10/22 rifles over the years I stopped using money to get accurate and started using my brain. Also keep in mind that nobody has been able to tell me why one day I shoot pool and I make almost every shot an a day or two later I can't win a game to save my life. It's all about hand eye and brain coordination. People shoot one time with one type of ammo and judge It. So have fun chasing accuracy for the rest of your life people and keep your wallet handy. The Shaw barrels cost only $129 each on sale (Bentz chambers). Arken scopes are great for the money, Magpull and Titan stocks are great also. I did have to drop some money on the Kidd receiver and triggers. Ain't life grand!!!!!!!

I just found your channel and I subscribed. I totally agree with what you say about the cost vs. accuracy dilemma. First some background about me. I have been shooting for 58 years, used to own a gunshop, did some gunsmithing, am a Grandmaster in Steel Challenge shooting Rimfire Optic. Enough about that. About 20 years ago I was at a gun show and decided to buy a Butler Creek blued steel heavy barrel for my completely stock 10/22. The guy I bought it from said "you will hate this barrel". When I asked why he said "because you can't miss with it, it is that accurate". He wasn't wrong. With doing nothing else but putting the barrel on, and using RWS Rifle Match ammo, with a Tasco 3-9 scope, I was able to consistently hit push pins at 50 yards. I am not a rifle novice, I shot 3 position rifle using an Anschutz 1813 rifle for many years. It is my feeling that all of the accuracy is in the barrel, and once the bullet is in the chamber, the rest of the gun is just a way to get the bullet there. Fast forward to today. As I said I shoot Steel Challenge at a high level, and built 2 guns for that sport. I started with 2 10/22's that are about 50 years old, and the only non-Ruger part I added was the barrel, which is a Tactical Solutions X-Ring 16" Aluminum sleeved version. I deburred and polished the inside of the receiver, polished and did some bolt mods, reworked the stock trigger for a 1.25 pound pull. It's amazing what you can do with a little knowledge and some hand tools. I am into the gun for $50, the barrel for $200 and a dot for $39. The stock is "stock" as well with some modifications. And that's it. I am routinely beating the guys with $1,500 guns. In this sport it is the reliability combination of the gun and ammo, it has to go bang every time you pull the trigger. In 4 years of competition, and many thousand rounds shot, I have only had one malfunction and it was a dud round. I have shot a variety of different ammo after testing for reliability, and have settled on CCI. It groups well and always fires. Just recently I updated the dot to a "real" one that is brighter and doesn't was out on the white plates. If you want to see how I built this gun and what mod's I made, check out my channel, Al Frangipane, or click on the green dot to the left. If it works, the link is below. Being a mechanical engineer, and past gunsmith, I always try to do things myself before buying stuff. I understand that not everyone has the talent to work on guns, and I also have limitations, but I get much more satisfaction making it myself then buying. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKiYdoagrJmerK8

About ten years ago I took my sons factory stock Ruger 10/22 and made it into a tack driver. I bought a Green Mountain 20" fluted blued barrel and a Hogue green stock through our local gun store for about $150. Since I bought it through them, they threw in a trigger kit that normally would cost about $75 but they hadn't sold any and they gave it to me so that I could come back and let them know if it was easy to install and whether it made any difference in trigger pull. The kit was fairly easy and it brought the pull down to about 3.5 pounds. But nowadays you can buy a 2.5 pound trigger pull Ruger BX trigger drop in for about the same money. I have done about a dozen builds since then and the BX trigger is the way I go; I recently bought one for only $64.99, but mostly they are selling around here for about $80. Anyway, the first build I did was my sons and only cost $150 above the cost of the gun but I figure with inflation, I could still do that for about $250; it would be about $275 since I have come to appreciate the skeletonized charging handles that cost $25.

Thanks you for the very good video. All there rifle are very accurate. For your next 10-22 build have an accuracy gunsmith thread a good action with tight class 3 threads for the barrel to action fit. My Ruger action was threaded by my friend that taught a 10-22 gunsmithing class for the Colorado Gunsmithing School a number of years ago. It is very accurate with a tight Benz chamber. I bedded it into a wood Ruger Sporter stock. The only additions are a Kid 2 stage trigger, some unknown stainless barrel and a brass tuner I made. See Day at the range Turkey Challenge for target and rifle photo. Philip’s experience was that a threaded action and barrel with a good chamber will out shoot a rifle with a standard Ruger barrel attachment. There are exceptions. Reference: Harold R. Vaughn’s book “Rifle Accuracy Facts”. Less barrel to action movement during firing. Thanks. I really like your videos. JD

Thanks JD, from now on any 10/22 build will be built with the Powder River Precision receiver set. It has a thermal fit for the barrel and it’s tight. Saves having to go to a gunsmith and with there recoil spring being on top instead of on the side, that setup provides the smoothest action on any 10/22 I’ve ever had, even after 800 rounds with no cleaning. It’s very impressive.

Absolutely, I never get hung up on name brands anymore. But, with a reputation like what KIDD has you would expect something more for your money. Although the inside of the KIDD barrel is absolutely impeccable, the Green Mountain not so much but they shoot exactly the same and that’s what matters. Will the GM barrel last as long as the KIDD? I believe it will as long as it’s cared for. I have never spent more then $11 for a box of ammo either. I set a price on what I want to spend on ammo and try everything in that price range and below. I’m gonna send it back to KIDD for some work, the amount of money it costs I shouldn’t have to send it to CPC, it should shoot out of the box.

So I’m looking into building my first 10-22. I have a few I have bought but my main question would be on the receivers. Should I spend more money on the bolt and barrel as compared to the receiver? As in a Brownells receiver compared to a Faxon or VQ receiver
@CompShooter54
@CompShooter54 Жыл бұрын
I see that no one has answered you yet, so I'll jump in here. I built 2 Steel Challenge rifles based on 10/22's and every part is stock Ruger except the barrel, and both guns are 50 years old. Stock receiver, bolt, trigger group, and stock, all which had been reworked by me. The trigger breaks at 1.25 pounds. In many thousands of rounds fired in practice and competition in the past 4 years, I have only had one malfunction, and it was a bad round (misfire). Before I built these guns - 20 years ago - I installed a Butler Creek heavy steel barrel, and with RWS Rifle Match ammo, I could hit the heads of push pins at 50 yards, every time. And that was with a very old Tasco 3-9 scope, stock trigger with a crappy pull, and "stock" stock. As long as the gun functions, in my opinion, the barrel is the most important, a good trigger next, then the glass. I don't think the stock adds anything, as long as it fits the action properly. If the receiver is loose in the stock then you should bed it for a tight fit. Check out my channel for the build of this gun. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKiYdoagrJmerK8

Sorry man, for some reason, when i log into KZbin from my computer i found way more comments. The barrel and Trigger are probably where you should spend your money. Find a receiver you like the looks of and go with that, unless you want a rear tang bolt, then its KIDD that has that capability. The Krg Bravo and Victor Titan have tang bolt in capability as far as the stock goes. i prefer the KRG.

@@rhodesoflife hard to beat a SuperGrade. I can get u 10 percent off if you decide to go that route. Use code 22rsskidd. When I made this video I was trying all kinds of different manufacturers parts. While this rifle does shoot great it has presented a few issues. I’ve had to replace the Brownells bolt with a Kidd. Light strikes. The GM barrel takes twice as long to get clean as it is not lapped like a Kidd barrel. The rifle was quite reasonable when I built it but the prices have really gone up on everything. It’s not that much more to build a Kidd at this point as they haven’t raised there prices all that much. And the quality is so much better. I'll take a Kidd barrel every day of the week and twice on Sunday. Mine shoots better than what was represented in this video. It will even shoot the cheap Federal automatch into smaller groups than this video showed. I know Tony Kidd laps and guarantees these barrels personally, so I'm skeptical of something being wrong with your set-up. Receiver may be stressed in that stock, or scope rings not torqued properly, or just the nut behind the butt.

Lol, this is funny. It’s like people don’t listen. I said I have lot tested ammo for this rifle, that does shoot better then the SK used in the video. But I wanted to use the same ammo in each rifle to be fair since the GM budget rifle wasn’t lot tested. Tony Kidd guaranteed 1 moa at 100 yards and it does that. But so do the others at half the cost which is my point, for instance Kidd charges $400 for there 2 stage trigger and it feels great, but it didn’t beat a $65 ruger trigger. Does it feel better, yup, is there the utmost care taken in the build quality and design, yup but it didn’t show any improvement in the group size when everything is apples to apples. Funny thing is the weather had the most to do with the groups. .22 is just a tad unstable when it gets cold out, and if you have watched the Budget build video you seen that that rifle actually shot the same SK shot in this video at a .272 at 72 degrees. So I’m not surprised you Kidd barrel shot better then in this video. Lol

Unfortunately I’ve got 2 other GM barrels, one of which will not shoot Minute of PAPER PLATE at 100 yards no matter what I feed it. The other one, will at least shoot MINUTE OF APPLE at 100 yds with SK Standard. Both have been replaced with KIDD barrels and if I do my part, both of those will shoot less than a MOA at 100 yds. with several types of ammo. I’ve never owned a Shilen barrel so I can’t comment on it but I hear they’re pretty darn good. The main things to stress when making a video like this is: 1 - With the cheap stuff, sometimes you get LUCKY. Interesting. I got one of the first reasonably-priced mass produced aftermarket 10/22 barrels back in the early '90s (I believe it's a Green Mountain), cinched it up to the factory receiver/bolt, put a Volquartsen trigger kit in, and dropped the whole shebang into a Hogue Overmolded stock. Groups @ 50 yards are 3/8" (.375") with several different types of ammo. I know that the recent variety in available receivers, bolts, chassis, and trigger groups makes the rifle more suitable for positional shooting, as well as improving ergonomics and making optics mounting easier, but I am slightly surprised that it doesn't seem to increase the accuracy significantly beyond what was achievable 30 years ago.

Yeah, the Kidd has been in every stock I’ve got with pretty much the same results.

Ok, you messed up as soon as you said all three would going to be shooting the same ammo. EACH RIFLE likes its own ammo. So you cannot compare a cheap rifle to an expensive on that way. Now your components like the stock, that’s your choice, but from the many 10-22’s I have built, those I used a Kidd barrel, trigger and bolt in, all shot just as well as my Anschutz bolt action rifles. But I let the rifle tell me the ammonia liked. I did not force feed an ammo in it that I used in another rifle. So all of this for nothing. You wasted everyone’s abs your own time. Yes you can find a good GM barrel now and then. But KIDD barrels are the best. Kidd bolt assy’s are the best also. And their triggers. Actions do not matter. Stocks do but to a point. They all need the actions bedded to be extremely accurate. So yeah, next time you test three rifles and shoot the same ammonia all of them, two of them will not do well with that ammonia, but one of those other rifles may be the far better shooter WITH the RIGHT AMMO.

Actually that ammo shoots well in all 3 of those rifles. I mean the group sizes were very close and very good.
