10.8 Adult vs 9.3 Junior | UTR Tournament FINALS (Match #7)

This is the FINALS in my Universal Tennis event series! The format of the tournament is an 8-game pro set, co-ed, 8-person draw. Tonight we've got Hermont and Matteo. Hermont has finished a D1 career while Matteo is a junior still growing and planning to play college. Both are solid from the baseline and have an all-court game. Stay tuned to see who wins and leave some nice comments for Hermont and Matteo for putting themselves out here please!

Hermont is a beast but this is the cleanest I’ve seen Matteo hit the ball. Difference came down to physicality of a 20 something vs a young teen. Great series Winston, I enjoyed all the matches.

Both are excellent players, but Hermont has the ability to play anyones style and do it better. Matteo hits hard, Hermont hit harder. Ryan hits with more spin, Hermont used even more. I dunno about anyone else but there's only one true challenger left for Hermont. Coach Chase!

Hermont had a big serve advantage winning 6 free points on his serve and 6 free points with Matteo's double faults. Otherwise Matteo could have won a couple more games. Hermont is using dropshots really well when Matteo is behind the baseline 7:18 8:25 10:35 13:16 - he even gets away hitting dropshots from behind the baseline because he is so damn fast great final match!!!

Based on their UTR’s, the outcome is about right. Matteo has a nice game and a good ball striker. But Hermont packs a punch and he’s got wheels. Nice playing guys.

I have seen Matteo in many of these videos, and I am always impressed with his positive demeanor and good sportsmanship. (Not to say Hermont doesn't have those things, he does, but I just find it heartening when a teenager is mature like that.) Matteo will be quite the player as he matures, provided he stays on this trajectory.

Very interesting observation from Matteo: Before he serves, Hermont looks at his target. That's some great insight! Hermont was dialed in from the start and he played better as the games went on. No surprise that he would win here given the age difference. Matteo was certainly not expecting some of his shots to come back, clearly Hermont's pace on his serve was a big advantage and also his experience. There were some really good rallies overall, most of which Hermont won and I feel it was because he was patient enough to wait for the right set up or shot. If Matteo was older (early 20s) it would've been a more highly contested match but he was able to hang in there. I feel for him because it was going by too quickly and that can be discouraging. Great tournament series and really unique tennis content! P.S: Bring back Coach Chase!!!

Matteo did a great job returning his serve. I doubt his peer have the strength to serve like Hermont so I was impressed. And I liked how Matteo often attempted to go on offense. We have seen Hermont completely bullying his previous competitors. The kid put up a good fight but Hermont has a deep bag, superior physical strength, and sneaky good athleticism.

This was the best Hermont played this event. The other matches he was able to just safely make balls and his opponents eventually imploded, here he made a lot of great offensive and defensive shots. Matteo played really well. Continually asked Hermont some tough questions, but unfortunately Hermont consistently came up with the answers. But think Matteo really stepped it up in semis and finals. I’m good friends with the Hoffmann family and Matteo is very similar to a younger Niels, well done man, think you’ll be making a similar jump to him next few years.

Also no way Hermont is only a 10.8. Sac state has a power 6 of 72, meaning the average UTR of their 6 players is a 12, and Hermont was playing #1-2 for them in 2019-2020

Great match! I feel like what Hermont does best is put his opponents in tough, uncomfortable situations by playing drop shots and slices at angles whenever he sees a chance. Also more consistent serving and shotmaking. But to be fair, Matteo is right up there too in the groundstroke arena. Loved this tournament.

hermont is a beast! Besides his top-tier serves, he returns serves very well and often end up with return winners. It kind of explains why many good players got many double faults.

For some reason Winston’s camera looks so much faster than other channels. Hermont wouldn’t get a game off Karue, Karue is still a good 2-3 utr over Hermont, even if he’s still rusty. Hermont is a beast though, especially at 5.0 or 5.5 level

Given the large discrepancy between their UTRs, that outcome was pretty much predictable. Matteo put up a pretty good fight. I though he hurt himself by pressing a bit in the middle of the match and hit some doubles, but he did hang in there and kept his head in the game... Good playing by both!

Matteo needs to work on a down the line with his backhand, it gets predictable going cross court. Having a down the line would help him change things up and put more pressure on his opponent. I live his attitude, always smiling.

The one who won had no net game, he sits on the baseline and the rhythm of his opponents rallies just benefits him, the other player actually tried to come to the net for some drop volleys, he should have kept that up, he didn't, stayed too much behind the baseline, he pretty much just passed the ball to his opponent, the one who won was very fast, so if you are facing that, just drop volley him all day, get off the baseline and catch some half court volleys and send them where he was not, pull him into the net, he had no net game, then pop a few volleys over his head, if he runs it down you are at the net for an easy volley winner, the one who won had a nice serve, but the last thing you do when receiving a fast serve is stand 10 feet behind the baseline, every step behind the baseline is 10% more chance your opponent will win because he knows you cannot come to the net if you are that far back so all he has to do is hit a off speed drop shot /volley across the net, always return a serve from inside the baseline, just meet the ball and plop it over the net to the opposite service box, don't just hit it back to him, when you are losing game after game you have to change immediately, the winner just fed off of forehand and backhand baseline rallies, he fed off of consistent balls coming his way.
