Factual error detected: Estonia never merged with Soviets against Germans. Estonia was invaded and occupied by the Soviets in 1940, after Soviet Union and Nazi Germany made pact and divided Europe into their spheres of influence. After Nazi Germany invaded Estonia as a part of its campaign against Soviet Union in 1941, Soviets were pushed out of Estonia, then in 1944 when Soviets were pushing Nazi Germans back and advancing into Estonia, Estonian people defended their land alongside Nazi Germans against the imminent Soviet take over. Soviets ultimately prevailed and retook Estonia, which they occupied until 1991, when Soviet Union collapsed and Estonia was able to restore its independence. Estonia was never a part of Soviet Union, it was occupied by the Soviet Union. Being part of something means consent in participation in something. Estonia was a hostage, not a participant. Estonia was never recognized as part of Soviet Union by any country. Estonia's the only recognized and legitimate government continued to function in exile during Soviet occupation. Similarly you don't say that France was part of Third Reich, you don't say former Nazi France, or former Nazi Norway, or former Nazi Poland.
@KaaiKivi6 жыл бұрын
Right! The Estonians even say the German occupation wasn't as bad as the soviet one because Stalin has deported many Estonians and has forbidden the Estonian Flag, Hymn and Culture. The Germans even let the Estonian Soldiers who where part of the Nazi-German-Army wear their own flag

Estonia is the least religious country in the world. We did not get such technical and cultural advancements in 20 YEARS by sitting in churches and praying for a miracle. Those who have lived here, tell tales of the extreme bi-polar nature of Estonians: cold, judging at first, but very hospitable and kind later. But thats what centuries of invasion and occupation does to a culture.

One thing to point out about the WWII part is that Estonia was occupied by Russia in 1940 and we didn't join the USSR freely. In 1944, many Estonians joined the 20. Estonian SS division, because they wanred to fight against Russia to restore their independence.

They said that the Republic of Estonia is restored and on Sept 18 1944, the Cabinet of Otto Tief came to power according to the Estonian 1938 Constitution, but the Russians didn't want to see an independent Estonia agaun. The Cabinet escaped to Sweden and Otto Tief created the Estonian Government-in-exile. The Cabinet lasted until Jan 12 1953.

Something I didn't like in the video is that you got it backwards with the Germans and Soviets, we didn't "join" them to fight the Germans. Our men were pulled into either military - it wasn't like there was much choice (some saw it as a choice to free our land from the Soviets, some brave men ended on British side etc). For us our Eastern neighbor was far worse, even leaving they sabotaged our land and stole resources. As a "victor" among the allies Soviets got passes on far worse things then the losers. Yeah, Euro is used, kroon (EEK) was removed from everyday business when Euro came into use - still possible to exchange into Euros in banks.

Something I find interesting about Estonia, are according to legend the Danish flag (Dannebrog) fell from the sky during the Battle of Lyndanisse in 1219, (present day Tallinn) when Denmark was leading a crusade against the people in Estonia. Also the Danes created the first real castle which was refered to "The Castle of the Danes" or Taanilinnus in Estonian, which might be where the name Tallinn originated. Its something that is taught in Danish schools and something we are proud of since we still use the flag. I knew the basic story of the name of Tallinn, but had to look up on the net for more facts, as I thought it was "Town of the Danes" So please dont rage if I got anything mistaken as I have a deep admiration of Estonia :-)

Tall means also stable in English and linn means town. So high likely it would be Stabletown also

@@holoholopainen1627 Estonia didn’t merge with the Soviet Union, they were illegally occupied and absolutely hated this occupation. The video makes it seem Estonia was scared of the Germans and worked alongside the Soviets, which is not true. Estonia joined the EU on 1st of May 2004, not 2003, they had the referendum to join the EU on the 14th of September 2003. Estonia fully uses the Euro nowadays and some things were horribly pronounced lol

We didn't merge with the Soviets. They moved their soldiers into our country. Killed and imprisoned our leaders and disbanded our military and said to the world that we "joined them". We fought back but tens of thousands of people were sent into Siberia inside animal trains, a lot of people(mostly children and old people) freezed and starved to death inside those wagons, and once they got to the end station they were put into forced labor and familiys were separated and they mostly never saw eachother again. And if you call that "merging" then i don't know what to say.
