I'm going to nitpick for a second here but: Pon de Replay is not latin music and it's not reggae either, it's dancehall. Both are afro-caribbean anglophone styles, and those are not interchangeable). The other one is in 11:16, Kevin says "Compai", not "come by". Compai means friend.

My takeaway is that Lin Manual is smarter than anyone has given him credit for (and most people give him a lot of credit), and that you understand his mind more than most any essayist I’ve seen and that implies you’re a pretty brilliant person as well.

==SPOILERS!== One cool detail about the hipster couple who asks for directions. There’s a possibility they interrupted Usnavi in the present day and he included them in his narrations: there’s a couple in the beach shortly after that moment who resemble the man and woman asking for directions. It implies the beach is real for first time viewers, but on a rewatch it’s a giveaway that the beach is imaginary and covering up Usnavi’s store.

The moment where Graffiti Pete reveals the painted wall at the bodega, you can hear ocean waves and birds. But it is significant for Usnavi because he is the only that can hear those noises. I like this because it shows that the wall was all he needed in order to feel like home.

I usually refuse to get streaming services bc I don't have much money to spend, so my partner got me HBO max to watch in the heights together and let me tell you. I BAWLED my EYES OUT. Such a good movie, and I would really like to see an overall analysis of Lin's music style because of it. In the opening number, right before the "Yeah I'm a streetlight choking on the heat" line, there's a build-up that is almost exactly the same as the buildup to "my shot" in Hamilton. I've noticed a LOT of those similarities during the movie.. Might be a video idea!

3:16 I don't know if it's correct or not, and most likely that it is unrelated in anyway to In the Heights (this is just extra info/fun fact), but the D-flat to C notes can be heard in Mary Poppins Returns - more specifically, in the opening number, (Underneath the) Lovely London Sky, albeit in a different key. I put down the entire verse down, but the italic lyrics are the specific words where you could hear the notes: "Have a pot of tea Mend your broken cup There's a different point of view Awaiting you If you would just look up _I know"_ I just heard the D-flat to C notes, and immediately thought of this song. Again, it's unrelated, but I thought it would be nice to share the fact 😊

Building off of Usnavi as the stage manager & controlling the music in this world, does the beat actually changes after he says he's switching up the beat? It seems like it might, but it could just be something in the mix.

the way this movie butched the Rosarios; cutting "Inútil", the racial tension between Benny and Kevin, "Sunrise", "Everything I Know", "Enough", & worst of all killing off Camila (that's when the movie lost me)...it's so sad what they did, & I still can't figure out the reasoning...
@OriginalCharmazing
@OriginalCharmazing 2 жыл бұрын
5 months late and nitpicking here but Mr Rosario doesnt say come by he says compai which is slang for compadre. Compadre means godfather but also used between good friends. With that line it solidifies Usnavi and Mr Rosario as not only friends but also co-equals.

Something I though when watching the movie was that Vanessa got used to the sound of the train so much that the same beat that the trains does, is the beat that she uses in her song

I could be wrong but I don't think you have that 3-2 Clave right. Shouldn't the first measure be 1, and of 2, 4 | 1, 2 ? It's not straight quarter notes.

Look at them again. Those are not straight quarter notes. They are dotted quarter notes. So yes, it is 1, and of 2, and 4 like you said.

maybe when you anaylise plays or films; music you should continue the first 8 minute format so you cover a bit of evrything instead of just focusing on one song. And i know that the first 8 minutes thing isn't your format but you could adopt it and it'll be a cool story of why you use it in your videos. I dunno

I feel the movie sounds less latin than the broadway musical... i don't know that much about music but i've listened latin music since i can remember and there are some details that the brodway version has and the movie doesn't... and it's sad because those little things are the ones that i think gives identity to the musical so to me the movie sounds more like how americans thinks latin music sounds and the music sounds more like how latins thinks latin music sounds... and the same with the dancing... not a single step in the movie will be seen in any club in any latinamerican country...

Interesting. I wonder if they changed the arrangements somehow...like, made them sound bigger for the movie.
