Hi Steve, I have watched more then my share of instructional photography videos over the years. You are without a doubt, one of the best communicators on the web at this time. Not only is the information you are conveying consistently accurate (which is rare), but you succeed in making these sometimes complex concepts easy to understand and apply. Fantastic job!

Hi Henrik Sorry, for some reason YT isn't letting me reply to your comment directly. The book goes over a lot of tips for working with wildlife, how to use parks to you advantage, how to position yourself for good shots etc. As for finding animals, it doesn't really go into too much - other than to say to look for where they are most common. The problem is every animal has a different habitat and there's no silver bullet for where to look / wait for them. Each species is different, and the approach I'd take for a coyote would be different than for a heron. So, I guess the answer to your question is yes & no :) It points you in the direction you need, but when it comes down to where to find specific wildlife, that's up to you. (although I do list a lot of my favorite places here in the states for shooting and what to expect). Thanks!

Nice video, Steve. I often photograph birds on the beach, and I have to do what you mentioned. I often walk fast or jog to get ahead of them because they often move away from you, as you said. The frontal shots do look better, imo.

"Now, it’s not that I’m antisocial (OK, I am), but here’s the thing - the more people swarming the park, the more likely they’re going to drive off whatever critter you’re attempting to photograph" Dude, that ebook is the best 12$ I ever spent. No-nonsense content with just enough humor to keep you entertained while learning.

These tricks are also useful when shooting pictures in zoos. Of course, you are closer to the animals in the zoo, but these tricks helped me get amazing pictures. My tips for new beginners: 1. Be patient. The animals don’t care about when you are shooting photos, so they won’t move the moment you want them to. 2. If you shoot pictures in the wild, be extremely careful not to scare them, and invest in a camera lens, that can zoom and still have amazing quality 3. As he mentioned as the more important rule, try to shoot pictures in lower light, sunset and sunrise, and if there is fog.

All good tips, as usual. :-) I'd add to the wind one by saying keeping downwind may let you get closer. Just don't become breakfast. Also bring a macro lens, and look down and under stuff when things are quiet. If the big animals or birds are elusive, there are always colourful bugs and creepy crawlies, or even interesting fungi or whatever. Also keep an eye out for snakes (have to add that, as I'm an Aussie).

These tips are 101 for hunting which is basically what you are doing. When it's so cold out you don't want to go, get out there. The animals are cold too and need to eat and be active to be warm. I turned photography into scouting trips for hunting and turns out it's fun on its own.

Henrik Susort if you have friends that go hunting, they can surely give you excellent tips on that. You are both shooting wildlife, your tool is just the camera. Early bird does get the worm...birds are very active in the morning. You will see deer come out to the fields really early, show up before light so you don't scare them off. Same with the evening. Know the direction of the wind so they don't catch your scent. Throughout the day you can catch them feeding in the woods or bedding down in tall grass. When you go to wooded parks, look up to find Eagles nests. They are quite large, the bigger, the older. Know the breeding time and hatching of eggs. Once you find an active nest, you can usually visit it for years. I have been going to the same nest for over 7 years.... Talk to duck hunters too! Know mating seasons. This way you can catch them in their fancy or more colorful plumage. Btw, find out what they prefer to feed on. You will have good luck going to the places where their food grows like birds and berry bushes and fruit trees, flowers that have gone to seed. Milk weed and sunflowers... Hope that helps you a bit.

Just found you Steve, your tips are outstanding. Just pre-ordered the new Nikon D500. I'm selling my 7D2 to get it. The 7d2 is hardly better than the 7D. Has lots of features but an old style sensor with poor dynamic range that just can't handle low light. I have to use my 5D3 to photograph my grandson's well lighted indoor basketball games! Regardless the settings. This is B.S. Now the 5D3 is barely better than the 5D2, and that's going as well. Just as soon as the "D820." Is available. I'm making the switch. Fed up with Canon pushing 2nd rate tech at me for a premium price while withholding features. Besides that, hi-res is here to stay and will only increase. Nikon just makes a better camera that gives you significantly better pictures. Canon had 5+ years to catch up with Nikon and chose not to. Lots of lenses and speedlights to go and I'll lose money, but it's worth it. So it's good bye Canon for me!
