I only go to ATMs that are built into the facade of a bank. After I withdraw money I go straight inside the bank to their sitting area and pretend to fix my clothing pulling up my socks etc and also reposition my funds slowly. Nobody ever pays attention. Then when I walk out I'm confident everything is where I want it until I find a bathroom to further reorganize. I'm just paranoid about ATMs and know they are a #1 target of robbers. I never use hotel safes. Everyone at the hotel usually knows the master code.

I use a runners wrist wallet instead of a purse. Nice story ... I kept my “stash” money (should use ATMs instead!) in a calcium chew box in my suitcase (who would look in a vitamin bin?). In a hotel in Venice I must have taken it out of my suitcase and didn’t see it when leaving ... the maid actually turned it in and I got it and all my money back! (I did give her a €50 tip for being honest!)

Several years ago, just after leaving the Coliseum in Rome, my husband was jostled while entering a mostly vacant subway car. Hubby is quite tall and usually strides quickly, putting off most pickpockets, but this time was walking slowly and painfulIy with a cane. I was on a cane as well, and several steps ahead him. I turned back to look when I heard him say something to the effect of “get your damned hands off me” in English and then broken Italian. I saw a man in front of him, slowing him drastically, and one on each flank, and glimpsed hands retracting from outside pockets of his daypack and from a back pants pocket. Simultaneously, faces changed from blank to “shocked” and incredibly “hurt” expressions. His lightly-loaded wallet was in a front pants pocket somewhat protected from intrusion by a then over-hanging tummy. The guys certainly could have slashed the pocket, tho, had they so chosen. Mercifully, the only damage was to his pride. He was wearing a Pacsafe anti-theft day pack and had only tourist maps and brochures in his back pockets. All valuables were either locked up at the inn or buried deeply in our packs. This and one other are the only “blips” in many years of international life and travel. I already use your suggestions and agree with each. Expect the best, but plan for the worst!

Re: passports: in a lot of countries you're legally required to carry your ID and visa. Your passport is probably the most important item in your life when you're traveling - it's also the only valid form of identification in most countries (other than IDs issued in that country, ofc). The only time I might leave my passport out of my own reach would be if I'd be spending a day at the beach or something, though honestly I'd rather just carry a waterproof pouch for my passport, phone, and money.

I’ve had too many things stolen from me when my mother so I’m a little too paranoid! I carried 3 wallets when I travelled: One prepared for burglars, cash some coins fake cards and fake credit cards; the second one will be a copy of my first one.. the second one will have a color a very good color copy of all of my documents and 1/3 of my money or something (I’ve only ever traveled to Canada and that was in the early 1990s when you didn’t need a passport), and then of course my regular wallet. I’ve always pulled out whatever money I needed while I’m in the bathroom, singing or talking to myself; to cover up the noise I’m making. Robbers may not wanna even bother you if they think you’re nuts.

I have to ask, how do you dress when you travel? Wear spiffy new clothes ? Nice jewelery? How do you act when you travel? Squint at unfamiliar signs? Talk loudly? About how odd things are? If so, you make yourself a target. Also, how often have you had to use those decoy wallets? Of not at all, why are you still carrying them? If you are basing your behavior on long ago incidents when few people traveled, tourists were easy to spot and Target. People from different countries could be picked out by their clothes. Now everyone wears the same global brands and every country has immigrants and lots of tourists. Any one tourists is far less likely to be victimized.

Good tips. I have a fake wallet with only a couple of dollars. I save all sorts of plastic cards that I get in the mail and put in there. Also, old bank cards from institutions that don't do business with. I iron the numbers flat and demagnetize the strip on the back (probably overkill). Since I'm not a woman I hide my money and passport in a leg pouch that my socks come up over. To get money out, I just go to the bathroom and take out what I need. Usually, I already have what I think I'll need for the day. I don't use ATM's but that's up to you. Also, I treat my fake wallet just like a real one. I may put a few dollars (whatever, the local currency is) into it next to the few dollars I usually keep it in. Travel Fashion Girl seems to keep more than I do but she is comfortable doing that. Just always be aware of your surroundings in both big crowds and when there is either next to no one around or no one around. And just because you might be a big individual and don't think you can't be a victim.

The wallet is a exact same as his real one with one minor difference that only he would know...that is the real one is skinny and the fake is fat. He puts the fake in front of the real one so they think that they got the real one. Also if he is wearing boots or tennis shoes he duct tapes local currency of up to $200 inside the shoes in case he was robbed for real.

1) Always keep your passport on you (money belt), etc. You have to be able to be identified in case of emergency. 2). Bring 3 money belts: One to wear; one is being washed (still wet) while the third is drying. 3). It’s safer to wear your backpack in front of you. Not where a zipper is accessible behind you. 4). Wear a light rain jacket that you keep zipped-up for extra protection. Keep your side sachel inside. Find out a price & then go to a restroom to safely remove money. Don’t put anything in outer pockets that you would mind being stolen.

What would you recommend for men? These are all great ideas thanks you. Could you show a video for what men should do. For them its not so easy for them to hide it like it is for us women.
@anacee6 жыл бұрын
T H good question. Are you a toddler? Do you need anybody to tell you where to hide your money?????? Here is somd advice: in your underwear, son.
@TH-dj3zo6 жыл бұрын
Very funny HA HA!!!!!! I mean you show all these things that are made for women to hind their money but nothing for men. Like the money pouch a man can't wear that that under his arm without it showing. Or the bra stash a man should attach that to his???????? Where does your husband keep his money when he's not with you. Besides the two wallet thing.
@ginnyjollykidd6 жыл бұрын
One person mentioned a leg pocket. A shoulder holster would be a good idea. That way you have places to stash and pin things. You can make decoy wallets for your blazer or dress coat,and one or more for your pants pockets (trousers). You can make a garter from elastic (I recommend ¾ to 1 inch wide). Sew a length of elastic together to rest where you would have knee - high socks sit: at the small part between your knee and your calf muscle. You can attach a concealment pouch from it.

I know there are swimmtrousers for men with zipper pockets. Wear them as undertrousers. Like this: www.amazon.com/COOFANDY-Swimming-Trunks-Underwear-Zipper/dp/B07MXZQB14/ref=sr_1_19?keywords=swimwear+men+pocket&qid=1551706419&s=gateway&sr=8-19

MrEmichan but what if you get the card stolen/lost? And supposing the bank sends you a new one, it'd take ages till it gets to you where you are...
@MrEmichan6 жыл бұрын
Juliana Lima I've never had my cards stolen/lost and I've travelled a lot. I do take 2-3 cards with me and usually don't keep them all in the same place (separate them). I sometimes get a $500 (or less) visa card I keep for emergencies. Like I said before, I do take some cash with me.

@sarahphillips2956 жыл бұрын
The prepaid debit cards are great with a couple hundred dollars on them. If they are lost or stolen the amount that was on the card is all you lose. You don't have to worry about your credit card being maxed out or your checking account being drained. Always keep your cards separate so if something happens you still have others.

@janstickles30355 жыл бұрын
@wamblue - your passport is your international identification, not a photo copy. Do you keep your driver license locked away while you carry a photo copy in your wallet? Of course not. Try getting id'd in a club or by the police with a photo copy of your driver license, doesn't work. When travelling abroad treat you passport as you would your stateside drivers license. KEEP YOUR PASSPORT SECURELY WITH YOU. If you feel compelled to have a photo copy as back-up, leave the copy behind in your luggage or hotel safe along with the location and contact info for the US Embassy or US Consulate office in country you are visiting. If your US passport is lost or stolen you will need to get in touch with the Embassy or Consulate office immediately. So in an already stressful situation having the copy of your passport and contact information will be very helpful to you.

I have had pickpocketing attempts in Egypt and Cambodia. Then in Russia I left my wallet in the pants pocket in the hostel bed for ten minutes while I showered and that’s all it took. I used a money belt once, but felt so ridiculous reaching under my shirt for money that I never repeated it. Never considered using it as a sling, though
@jinde752 жыл бұрын
The bra and belt stashes are not used to crab cash from in public. You go to the restroom, take the money you need, put it in your wallet. As I never travel with loads of money I never needed to stash my money in different places. But sometimes you know you won't see another ATM soon..
@pegasusquilts5 жыл бұрын
Carry a paper copy of your passport with you when you go out. You may need it. If it is safe to leave your passport in your suitcase, it is safe to leave cash and credit cards there too. If you leave money under your pillow, you are asking for it to be taken! The housekeeper may even think you have left it as a tip! Money withdrawn from ATMs costs the same wherever the ATM is located. It isn't more expensive at the airport. Some credit cards waive some fees overseas, check around. Currency exchanges are more expensive. I've traveled the world for more than 40 years without having my pocket picked or anything stolen from my hotel room, even in the poorest countries, without using a money belt, bra bag or traveling bag (those are heavy! ) . Being so paranoid insults the people whose home you have gone to visit

Keep your important things like cards in a card case in your money belt or a zipper pocket on the inside of your jacket Keep some coins in the tiny pocket watch pocket of your jeans so just in case you get into a sketchy situation, you can give or throw those Keep a decoy wallet with an expired credit card and some (fake) bills you can hand over/throw to get out of a sketchy situation Never keep everything in one wallet! I once got robbed, trying to pay...the lady gave me my coins back, saying it is too much and with some sleight of hand, slipped a 100 euro bill out of my wallet Luckily, police were waiting for them to rob someone so they could arrest those street 'vendors' and I got my money back

Here are three things to consider: 1. Destination: One of the main things to consider when planning how to travel with jewelry is your destination. Have you researched the safety warnings for the city or country in which you’ll be traveling? Some destinations are more notorious for pickpockets and theft than others. You can “Google” your destination and review the government safety warnings prior to traveling 2. Accommodation: The type of accommodation in which you’ll be staying is also a factor when considering how to travel with jewelry. Are you staying at 5 star hotels, vacation rentals, or hostels? Determine if your accommodation has a safe or lockers where you can safely store your valuables. 3. Activities: As with planning your capsule travel wardrobe, considering your planned activities is one of the major influencers in how and what you pack. Are your travels based on sightseeing, action sports, or other leisurely experiences? While your jewelry may remain safely on your body while visiting the Eiffel Tower, it may be more at risk with an activity such as scuba diving. Review your travel itinerary to help you decide if traveling with jewelry is a do or don’t.
