Ugh! Yes, Super Mario RPG needs something new! Easily one of my favorite games of all time. It's so much fun to play still to this day. The timing on attacks and defense, all the characters, the Mario tropes and the music. Such a special game.

I agree with Radiant Historia. Other less known rpgs that need sequels are Live a Live, Rhapsody, The Cruxis Sword, and Black Sigil.

So fun fact. Rhapsody had two sequels...only in Japan. The first is about Cornet's daughter and the second is a set of stories each revolving around different characters within the world. Also hilariously enough, La Pucelle is also technically a sequel as it's set in the same world (there are some references in item descriptions to Marl). There's also one reference that you'd only get if you'd played those two only in Japan sequels but it involves endgame spoilers so I'm not gonna go further.

@@ithydoodles I know I read the text translations years ago, but it's not the same. Not to mention how all the games made by Nippon Ichi do a lot with the body language of characters for added comedy, so you're definitely missing by just reading.

YES! I really wish other JRPGs could have gotten the "Trails treatment" for super long series, as mad as it is to actually make it work. But yeah it would be so cool to have either prequels or sequels to these titles too, ideas the could be explored and all.

Well since kingdom of amalur is under a new company we might get a sequel some day the only reason it didnt get a sequel back in the day was that the original company went bankrupt due to mismanagement or something

I'm all in for a successor of Lost Dimension. Love this game. Just don't change the battle system to an action-rpg, keep the main premise of traitors and give us the japanese dub this time. I also like the groundwork of Scarlet Nexus and even the idea for its battle system. But before anything else Bamco has to get rid of the unbalanced difficulty that made SN as well as Tales of Arise really unpleasant to play. Without the outright unfair parts (I'm especially looking at you final boss) that game could have been great already. Btw. Nintendo always held the rights for Super Mario RPG. They just had Square develop that game because they themselves had zero experience with RPGs. As for who could develop a new entry; maybe Atlus? They could even have Intelligent System develop it in a way closer to Fire Emblem or Advance Wars.

Put Tokyo Xanadu on here at #11. It's a decent game, even if it lasted a bit too long, but it cries out for a sequel. I just know that it's the type of game where a sequel would improve everything about it and make an absolute classic. Also, let Kou have a romance. But not with Sora. Her and Chiaki are the otp from TX. They've said that they WANT to make a sequel and it was financially successful on Vita AND on PS4, but no love. Falcon just wants to make endless Ys and Trails games. My other first thought was definitely Scarlet Nexus. That plot definitely set up an obvious sequel in the one place uncorrupted by brain eaters. Spaaaaace!

I agree Tokyo Xanadu desperately needs a sequel, but it's already part of the Xanadu series, which kinda disqualifies it from the "games that need a series" list.

@@alanscott2517 Yeah - I completely agree. Xanadu Next has absolutely nothing to do with Tokyo Xanadu. It is not even remotely in the same world and has a totally different background. It's unfortunate They use the title Xanadu in two completely different games. Anyway - I completely agree there should be a sequel to Tokyo Xanadu. I think it would be good for Falcom to have another series next to the Trails and Ys games. Oh - and I definitely would like to see Kou and Asuka coming closer together. It would not surprise me Kou would join the same organization as Asuka. That looks like a good starting point for the next game.

I honestly want to see how the team behind Monark manages to expand on the universe… they said in a reddit ama that they’re keen on the idea of a sequel. I loved the way they used the phone to streamline gameplay, but if they can find a way to streamline the grinding even more and raise the difficulty/add more options for difficulty, I think it could truly shine.

I know Tokyo Xanadu is kind of related to the trails series, but I would love a new game on that setting. The game itself implies that there are other threats around the world and Rean...I mean... Kou is being considered to be recruited by all the great organizations. A sequel could follow him in the future or another new guy with him being the mentor.

Paper Mario was originally called SMRPG2. It's a sequel in all but name, so I wouldn't expect another. Bahamut Lagoon was a concept I thought had a lot of potential. You not only equip your warriors for turn-based grid battles but feed their pet dragons to help them evolve and get stronger, taking place primarily on a chain of floating islands that demand use of dragons or flying ships to get around. Great battle sprites akin to Final Fantasy 6.

Eternal Sonata would be awesome, it's my favourite jrpg that i've played. I'm not sure how they would tie in another composer to the series, because Chopin being chosen really fitted the story very well.

A Dragon Campaign prequel to Legend of Dragoon would be awesome!😄 I don't care if we'd already know the outcome. I still enjoyed Lufia II a lot despite having played the first one beforehand, and found in that case knowing how the heroes got to the final outcome we saw in-game was still very interesting. So I'd love seeing how the Dragon Campaign went down and all about how the original Dragoons found their Dragons and gained their powers.

I strongly agree that Radiata Stories deserves to become its own series. The idea of recruiting almost any NPC is great. I agree that The Legend of Dragoon deserves to become its own series. I think that Super Mario RPG deserves a high-quality Remake with added content and Have playable Luigi, Yoshi and Wario! And finally Eternal Sonata should become the Sonata series and I would really like for the future titles in the series be about: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig Van Beethoven and Robert Schumann

I love the potential of Scarlet Nexus to become a Tales like series that fits into a different slot than both Tales proper and its cousin, Star Ocean. I like that it has a lot of plot threads related specifically to issues in modern society, despite taking place in a pretty different world from ours. The game did position itself for a sequel, so I expect to see one. There's a hell of a lot of ways they could go with future gameplay options, whether it involves different playable characters that have their own ways of using each others' powers, or a future game could easily center itself around just one character making use of the 'brain eater' power to use many others. I've considered giving Code Vein a go at some point too. It seems like one of those games that got turned down a bit on launch, but has taken more of a turn recently, and I'm curious to possibly see how Namco does this type of game. :D

The JRPG I'd most want a sequel for is Dark Wizard on the Sega CD, it my favorite SRPG and I would love to see another game based in that world. This next choice might not fit the criteria since it is part of a series, but I'd like to see a direct sequel to Phantasy Star II since the game ends on a cliffhanger involving a new threat identified at the very end of the game. The sequel could follow the characters in this new conflict and the ending could provide some more detailed information on what would happen during the 1,000 year period between Phantasy Star II and Phantasy Star IV.

I'm going to take a cop-out answer. Terranigma. Yes, its technically the last of the Soul Blazer trilogy, but it could be fine for its own series. Another would be Octopath Traveler. It doesn't need to feature 8 protagonists, as the name could change based on the style of world it is in, like Nocturnal Traveler, or an ocean based rpg with ship battles called Octopath Voyager.

I fully agree on Eternal Sonata, Lost Dimensions and The Alliance Alive. I would love to see those have a sequel. I personally would add an Falcom game to this list, and that's Tokyo Xanadu eX+. While you probably won't agree with me fully (or even not at all), I would really, really LOVE to see a sequel to that game. There are so many loose ends that simply begging to be tied up. I still have hopes that Nihom Falcom makes the decision to make that sequel, because they have once said they are considering to make this a franchise. I know the chances are not that big, but as you said - A man can dream, right?

I agree with Radiant Historia, it has a lot of potential, and could include other worlds with a similar premise to the original game. Not sure how alliance alive would work but anything is possible. Radiata Stories need an HD update, nothing fancy just clean up the graphics similar to the recent release of Chrono Cross, and then make a second game. Super Mario RPG I would love to see come out either with updated graphics or not I just want to play it on my Switch, and a SMB RPG 2 would be good to have as well.

The top 3 games I'd love to see get a sequel(s) that are not in this list would be: Rogue Galaxy, Tokyo Xanadu, and Akiba's Beat (and yes I know Tokyo Xanadu and Akiba's Beat are classified into the Xanadu and Trip series respectively however as far as the game's plot, mechanics, setting, etc go they are effectively different series and should be treated as such and never should've been considered parts of other series imo...would make the same argument for Valkyria Revolution to a degree as well tbh). Could name more of course if I actually went through all my games as there's likely quite a few that could've easily been a franchise if either word of mouth was better, bias towards jrpgs wasn't as bad as it was a decade and half ago or so, or the companies actually properly marketed their games right (imo this is the only reason that Namco's Tales series has never rivaled Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest's sales...Namco sucks at marketing the series...got a bit better with Arise and the past few games I guess or the shift has been towards KZbin ads/game events at big events like E3 unlike in the past when the series first started and you may have had to rely on TV ads...better graphics in Arise likely helped too but the marketing has always been half assed in the west at the very least (marketing in Japan can get crazy though with how much they market there...same with most jrpgs tbh where they market their games well in Japan but their WW marketing is beyond sub par in comparison...same issue can be said for series like Ys, Valkyria, and Trails where they got enough marketing to hit about tier 2 since the beginning of their series (as in selling around 150 to 200K plus/getting past the 100K mark that most jrpgs in the PS2 era failed to pass...nowadays jrpgs seem to be selling better so I'd say the difference between tier 2 and 3 mark for jgps being made today would be around 150K or so)).

It is adapted in the game in consoles or not entirely like the god eater. There is also blackshooter the new dawn which is a franchise of the psp retro console which in a series and ova. And its a theme of Gothic and psycholigical with supernatural theme.

Pick the two which is the best the old or the 3ds which is a remaster with additional animation with a fanservice content. And it is a time travel game if the characters wants to change his decision of happening in the event.

Sakuna of Rice and Ruin, pretty much a 2D with 3D model Metroidvannia/beat em up style game that came out a year or two ago. Haven't played it myself yet (cash too tight the past few years so deliberately picking and choosing games to the ones I want the most) but was interested in it pre-release so kept an eye on it. Already sold about 1 Mil copies and has a mostly favorable response according to it's Wikipedia page (ya Wikipedia isn't particularly a good source to use in most cases when researching shit but when it comes to stuff like game statistics and the like they're generally 95% correct).

Number 10: I have been saying this for years. It was one of my most favorite JRPGs of all time. The combat system actually kept you engaged throughout the entire game. Number 9: I played through this very recently and it was damned good. I would love a series based off the premise of this game. Number 8: Was a pretty good game. I think it would be a fun series. Number 7: Never played this one. But an interesting premise to be sure. Number 6: Never played this one. Number 5: Never played this one. Number 4: Never played this one. Number 3: Never played this one. Number 2: Never played this one. Number 1: Definitely a YES!

SE has their subsidiary companies doing turn based RPGs still so for Mario RPG maybe one of those, but if Falcom or Gust wasn't too much of an anime stylized game company, these companies do amazing turn based game to maybe do Mario RPG. But a Mario RPG anime looking game will look very odd.

It's sad that there actually was a sequel to Legend of Dragoon in development at one point, though, I don't think they got very far before plans were scrapped. I also wish Lost Odyssey or Rogue Galaxy were series.

It is the same fanservice content and it is a vampirism thing i don't know but the game is seeing there memories. There term vampirism is like the blood franchise you know blood+ blood c. Its like a story of dracula crossover with the jp game.

Give Dragoon, and keep it turn-based, with the additions and the Dragoon transformations. Give me Lost Dimension 2. Just build on that fine battle system, "If it Ain't Broken, Don't Fix It". And Super Mario RPG... is and will always be for me the best.

Hot take I'll get roasted for but for it's "genre" code vein has my favorite combat. Though if there's a sequel I hope the level design is better. The cathedral area is one of the worst layouts imo. It killed the momentum I had when playing it. Dragons crown is amazing, when they remastered it I played another 500 hours. Super Mario RPG getting made easily available would be awesome. I would trust the octopath/triangle team. I want a FF tactics that picks up where the lions war ends. The Gameboy advance games started promising. Muramasa rebirth is another I would like to see return or become something more. Sakuna was great but the rice farming slowed everything down and I'm not big on simulation stuff

I think Scarlet Nexus storyline and gameplay mechanics were designed to be a franchise. Namco Bandai set up that game with plenty of room to make a trilogy and even a prequel.

It saddens me that the game with the generic interchangable protagonists and bare bones story is Vanillaware's best selling game. I found 13 Centinels and Oden Sphere to be phonominal experiences. Also, Compile heart wierdness and fan serviceiness not withstanding, I actually really enjoyed the Death End Request games. Both of them. Despite how they cut most of the voice acting in English - a big personal strike, the story was actually very interesting, and much darker than many JRPGS. We need more mature JRPGS too. I do wish I'd had a chance to play Eternal poison. It was a game I was interested in on the PS2 but never had a chance to get. Now it's too late.
