The best example of this for me would be Strange Journey Redux, my first SMT game. Seeing it on the 3DS eShop intrigued me, but I didn't know much about Megaten at the time, aside from what I'd heard about the SMT IV games and Persona. I thought it'd be a weird, short game about "space girl" (Alex) fighting "owl creature" (Amon), so I took a gamble buying it physically, but then it ended up being one of my favorite pieces of media ever.

I used to hate Pokémon Mystery dungeon because it was so different from the main series but once I eventually got used to the mechanics and is now one of my favorites

For me, the Trails series exceeds my expectations. It's world building, story, and character developments never fails to blow my mind. I'm not a fan of tactical turn based RPG game until I played this game, it's simple yet unique battle system especially the quartz setup. I enjoyed a lot while playing. Btw Trails from Zero (Zero no Kiseki) and Trails from Azure (Ao no Kiseki) is my favorite game of the series (I'm very excited to play their localized version).

I thought Trails in the Sky would be fun. I put it down on the PSP. Picked it up again from GOG. Wow! Great middle game! There are times when they do a *great* job transferring the story and character charm into just what the characters actually do in battle. NPC Kloe AI just walks away, then heals with perfect timing. Why is Joshua's VA portraying such a dark and brooding personality? Is that sword style really so special? Oh, maybe it is.

Great list, Sakura Wars V So Long My Love is underrated as hell, even by Sakura Wars fans in Japan. Sadly many people cant play this game legaly, because this game is so expensive and still no ports on modern platforms (no digital version). Buying this game in Europe is much more unlikely than San Marino win with Brazil in football. Being a fan of VN games and niche RPGs in Europe is very difficult ...

Blue Reflection was on sale a few days ago on Switch and I picked it up at your recommendation. I've been having a lot of fun with it. I'm having fun right now. Yeah, it's a magical girl RPG but if you don't mind stuff like Sailor Moon and like JRPGs, it's remarkably solid.

And now I really, really want both DQ Heroes games because I loved the unholy hell out of HW: AOC. Certainly going to take the other suggestions in mind too, especially Blue Reflection: Second LIght. Given how much the Disgaea (particularly 1 and 4) and Senran Kagura games land with me from a writing perspective, the way you described it definitely pegs it in a way I'm gonna enjoy for liking those two series, you make it sound like it's solid enough to look past the peculiarities of. Edit: Both Blue Reflection games are on Steam! I'm glad Koei-Tecmo is finally porting more of their games, for being such long-time sticklers on being console only.

For me one of those has to be Yakuza 7. I loved the Yakuza franchise before that, I loved turn based games before that. So there was a good start already. But what I worried about is that it was RGG's first try with turn based combat. .... somehow they managed to make Y7 the best Yakuza game to date, as well as one of my favorite JRPGs ever.

You're sleeping on Yakuza 7: Like a Dragon. One of the best modern JRPGs I've played. I never played the previous games but I still loved it. I think its even free on Playstation Plus.

Awesome video my man! I love your channel! I just bought Persona 5 Royal and Blue Reflection for the Switch yesterday and today! Along with a Japan/Asian only switch game called Little Witch Nobeta. 🙂 Can't wait for them to arrive. Radiata Stories was one of my favorite games on the PS2! Along with Eternal poison and Stella Deus. The only thing I hate about Eternal poison is you can't replay levels to grind and level up. And Sakura Wars is amazing too! A recent example of this for me came when I played Trails from Zero. I hadn't played many games in the Trails series though I am a big fan of other Falcom games that I've played. So I had high expectations going into it and it surprised me by being even better than I had imagined. The story and characters really pulled me in and now I'm eagerly waiting to find out what happens next in Trails to Azure. At least that game is being released fairly early next year so I won't have to wait all that long, but I'll still probably get impatient soon enough. 😆 While it might be a stretch to call it a JRPG, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim really blew me away with how good it was on every level. The characters, character development, story, and the portrayal of characters through multiple lives that they've lived really connected with me and I was eager to discover what would happen for each character. The ending is also one of the best that I've ever experienced in a game and the great visual style made it all the better. It's a nice feeling when upon completing a game that you know this is one of the greatest games you've ever played.

The first xenoblade chronicles really blew me away. I normally stay away from mech type stuff but the game immediately sucked me in and I havent stopped playing them since. It even got me to try other games like Sakura Wars which I really enjoy so I am glad I gave xenoblade a try.

Definitely Sakura War's. Love cut scenes that led into the next chapter, definitely made you feel like you interacting with a anime than a video game. My favorites we're Gemini, love the over the top country girl vibe and Rosarita, her super always made me laugh. Everyone lets eat!

Man Radiata is probably my favorite one shot jrpg (the other contender being rogue galaxy) It reminded me a lot of suikoden with how many characters you could recruit in it

Sakura wars series was really good. If you liked it I recommend Utawarerumono (if you've not tried it, if you have I apologize) it's by far my favorite visual novel that has combat. Tears to Tiara is right in the middle of it and Sakura wars

A suggestion for you to check out, 2 old PS1 games, Legend of Dragoon and Legend of Legaia, both were really good and imo deserves a remake or remaster. The game that surpassed my expectation was Tales of Arise.

For me it was Trails of Cold Steel 3. After playing the sky and crossbell arcs i felt that the cold steel games were a bit dissapointing ( still good just not as much as the previous ones ) but when i played cold steel 3 it was my 3rd favorite in the series behind SC and azure. Also Persona 5 Strikers, I was not expecting a semi-full fledged sequel to persona 5 i thought it would just be a spin off warriors game.

I've read a couple comments of people being almost angry or disappointed in Atlus for releasing P5R on other platforms. What is their problem? Why don't they want people to experience a game they like and show Atlus that people want more Persona? Something about people begging on Twitter being annoying. Begging got us Xenoblade and many other great titles also everything on Twitter is annoying. Got P5R yesterday on Steam, €60 well spent! Gonna have a hundred hours of fun with it :)

I wasn't expecting much from Asdivine Hearts, seeing Kemco jrpgs getting quite a bad rap, my expectations were low, it's genuinely really enjoyable and quite funny jrpg in parts. Eternal Sonata i really wasn't expecting much at all, it turned out to be my favourite jrpg of all time, single player wise.

Has anybody ever played xeno gears is it real good game turn based and it's so hard to play you need a strategy guide but it's worth it it's for PlayStation 1 and I finished it and it's such a good game it's rare you could get it off eBay or Amazon but I don't know the price right now you have to look.

I can join you with the "eating words" on Fire Emblem Three Houses. I'm a big Fire Emblem fan and while i liked the 3DS games, I didn't love them. I thought it will be a Persona and Fire Emblem Fates lovechild and boy was i wrong. Three Houses is one of my favorite strategy Rpgs now! Maybe i have to give Persona 5 Royal a try aswell.. 🤔

Sakura wars so long my love kinda changed my life. It made me learn english a ton. 😅 I wanted to understand everything so i put everything into self learn in english. If trophies were there, i would have get the platinium. I did all ending, maxed out everyone, saw all dialogues routes. Even though I was a huge fan of Disgaea, I hated Phantom Brave at first, then I learned more about the summoning system and it became another great NIS game up there with Disgaea and Makai Kingdom. Sometimes you just have to learn how to play the game.

Zanki Zero is the one that comes to mind. I love Danganronpa and Zero Escape, but this game didn't seem as interesting. It had base building and item scavenge mechanics, but it didn't seem that in depth. The story didn't seem very dark from the early parts that I researched. Also, since it's Spike Chunsoft who makes visual novel games, I expected the battle mechanics to be really scuffed and lackluster. But I was wrong about that. Well, some complain about the battle mechanics, but I think that's because they don't understand it, or because they don't enjoy this type of game mechanics. It's a dungeon crawler action RPG, but the mechanics behind it is more like Dark Cloud, Atelier and Rune Factory, but very streamlined. So even if you don't enjoy this style of resource focused RPG's, you'll be fine. And it's the story that sells the game. It's a slow burn by their usual VN standards, but works fine as an RPG. And I have never wept so much over a game as when I experienced the ending. Spike Chunsoft always delivers. These are not feel-good games, but they make you think about really important universal topics.

i was skeptical about playing royal after having played vanilla persona 5. but im glad i did because i took the game more seriously this time around and didn't cheese on safety difficulty (i did play on safety but i didn't use it as crutch). i loved the new stuff except for the will seeds and the new scenario/final boss better the original.

The Dragon Quest Heroes games are wonderful. They retained the adventure and RPG essence of DQ games, unlike other Musou-fied games that lost their heart and became reskinned Dynasty Warriors.

The one that comes to mind for me is Nier Automata. Yes, it's highly acclaimed now, but when I watched the trailers the feeling just didn't vibe with me, and didn't feel like I could relate to androids, who were apparently all the characters. So my hype meter was basically 0... until I saw some Let's Plays of the opening, and was laughing at how they got destroyed, but a little intrigued by the shifting game modes. So finally on a whim and curiosity picked it up and was BLOWN AWAY. It ended up being the most emotional gaming experience in the last decade, even over FF7R.

I am now picking up Blue Reflection. I think I missed the sale of it on the eShop but that will have to wait a week or two until pay from work comes in. I picked up a slew of games but not this one thinking it was just another Hentai game which are funny and all but not for the price it was asking lol. If VR was in it and it was then okay I'd pick it up and lock myself in my room because god would that look weird to everybody lol.

I think Radiata Stories is highly underrated and I'm disappointed we'll likely never get a sequel. And, as silly as it sounds, Rogue Galaxy; blew past my expectations. The art style was intriguing but I wasn't a huge Level 5 fan and was expecting something closer to Dark Cloud. Instead it felt like Final Fantasy XII (aesthetic and story) with an action RPG gameplay. Another game I wish it got a sequel.
