I'm shocked i'm not seeing Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead more here. Brilliant visuals, and the beginning of River Song as a character prewriting over 5 seasons of her character and the adventures she would go on (mentioning certain things in her diary that then became episodes) to eventually finally come full circle to her final night on Darillium 2 doctors later with Capaldi's second season where the Doctor does just as she said he did all those years ago. Like cmon, it may be the greatest piece of writing in not only who but in any series. So complex and to have actually been followed through.

A percentage of people didn’t like the Vashta Nerada (not including myself) since they were basically low-budget, one-off villains. I understand the rational, they were basically just afraid of shadows, but I personally think the atmosphere and story sold them as antagonists anyway. And “Hey! Who turned out the lights?” will always bring chills to my spine.
@islandmat
@islandmat 7 ай бұрын
@@Magrijack I can almost agree, while I'd still say it was one of the better villains of the time period, it was definitely mostly just the writing that made it for me. Like River mentioning the Byzantium almost right away, which would be their next (onscreen) adventure together with the return of the weeping angels. It's the episode(s) that got better season after season.

I really hope Moffat comes back to Doctor Who at least as a guest writer. The fact that the two episodes that were disqualified because of how good they are both being Moffat episodes says a lot. When you see all of time, you know exactly where to land and at what time, for events to happen as they do. Bottomline, it's not the Doctor that's saving the universe...it's the Tardis. She's the main character. Doctor is just her agent.

A beautifully lyrical expression of The Starry Night : Try to see what I see. We’re so lucky we’re still alive to see this beautiful world. Look at the sky. It’s not dark and black and without character. The black is in fact deep blue. And over there! Lights are blue. And blue in through the blueness, and the blackness, the winds swirling through the air… and then shining. Burning, bursting through! The stars, can you see how they roll their light? Everywhere we look, complex magic of nature blazes before our eyes. Nothing’s quite as wonderful as things he saw.

OK, am I the only person in the world that actually loved "Love and Monsters"? To me, it's pretty great. 1) It shows the effect of the Doctor on the people that he comes in contact with. It acknowledges that when the Doctor shows up, it usually means your life is about to rapidly turn to caca (Really, that is true for almost any fiction, no point in a story where nothing bad happens to anyone. But I loved that the show pointed out this fact) Especially since Doctor Who often doesn't save everyone, which is another thing I like about the show. It gives the show some stakes. 2) The monster is goofy and was designed by a child. Doctor Who is chock full of goofy monsters and for me that is part of the charm. And Doctor Who was always intended to be a children's show. It belongs to them. The writer's have been good about including much that is enjoyable to me as an adult, but the show belongs to the kids. 3) I think the episode is a metaphor for fandom, especially on-line fandom. I have often seen it happen. Someone starts a little community focused around some particular subject. At first they just talk about the subject, but eventually the people get to know each other and relationships form and eventually its more of a social group than a discussion about the subject. And everyone is having a good time. Then someone comes in and rants about how nobody is talking about the subject anymore and people give in because, well, it IS a forum about whatever. But it stops being fun and people start to disappear without a trace. 4) It featured ELO. Now, I liked ELO as a kid, but I got older and became far too sophisticated to like ELO anymore. But this episode convinced me to say, screw being so above it all, just enjoy what you like. It's not a contest. So I like ELO again. 5) The infamous paving stone girl. Yes, to suddenly find myself as nothing but a full conscious face on a piece of concrete would be a horrific nightmare. But I don't think she is human anymore, she is a human-paving stone hybrid and apparently the state feels natural to her. She explicitly states so. So, in a sense, she is one of the most alien beings on the show, whose view on the world we cannot hope to understand (although, apparently, she can still love). But even if we can't understand her, we can still accept her, which I think is a pretty good lesson for anyone (particularly in America right now). As far as their 'bit of a love life', well, it wouldn't be my cup of tea by any means, they are both consenting adults capable of giving consent, so whatever. Another good lesson I think, (particularly in America right now). 6) It's funny. OK, I await your universal condemnation.

Steven Moffat and Peter Capaldi's comic chops were front and centre, and the whole episode is a blast from start to finish, all while developing Clara & Danny's sweet (but doomed) relationship. And 12's "You've made a boyfriend error!" line manages to be both hilarious and heartbreaking in the sane breath.

Ah. I always feel mixed about Vincent and the Doctor. I think it's an episode of great moments. Lovely character beats, especially in exploring amy's character and Vincent's and the final 10 mins is just peak doctor who; so emotional in a way that only this show could be and makes me cry. Also good (though i would argue under-developed) depiction of mental health though still great to see doctor who explore it. But the rest of the episode is kind of... meh. It feels rushed and prosaic almost and like they just want to get to the next bit they actually liked writing? Like the other episodes like Turn Left and Midnight and the Obvious Moffat ones are just masterpieces, every moment is in there for a reason and adds to the story. Where as Vincent and the doctor feels like you could just have the scenes or moments that everyone loves and take out the rest and you wouldn't be missing anything? Just my opinions OBVIOUSLY 😬 You can love it as an episode, that's fine and I definitely appreciate what it does and still enjoy it and the rest of the episode could be just a taste thing for me. I'm just surprised to see it top a "best episode" list when it, in my mind, is more of "best moment" list contender. (But like i say, that's just me and interested to know if people agree or disagree)

Just to be clear, this is a list that excludes previous bests. Current IMDB list is (episode, writer, show runner): 1- Blink, Moffat, RTD 2- Heaven Sent, Moffat 3- Forest of the Dead, Moffat, RTD 4- The Day of the Doctor, Moffat 5- Vincent and the Doctor, R. Curtis, Moffat 6- Silence in the Library, Moffat, RTD 7- The Girl in the Fireplace, Moffat, RTD 8- Doomsday, RTD 9- Family of Blood, P. Cornell, RTD 10- Journey's End, RTD While I am at it, here is statistics: RTD was showrunner for 7/10, Moffat wrote 6/10. This goes similarly for top 50. I am very hopeful for upcoming episodes.

I agree with @OperationBlueprint - Blink has 9.8 (24k votes) & Heaven Sent has 9.6 (13k votes) on IMDb. As these aired in 2007 & 2015 they should be included in this list. They are both highlighted as the top-rated episodes on IMDb's Doctor Who main page.

Angels Take Manhattan is an extremely average episode that is quite literally only remembered for its final scene (and the preceding rooftop plummet.) Yes, the goodbye is heartbreaking, but it is functionally independent of what is otherwise a forgettable and at times nonsensical Angels outing. Also, Name of the Doctor and Good Man Goes to War? Come on.

I wish Moffat had come back instead of Russell T. Especially for the 60th. At least Moffat's stories aren't all stuck on earth. For the last 4 episodes we have with Russell T Davies, 3 of them are on earth. Again. What a surprise. Moffat's era was the best IMO. I was also shocked that no Peter Capaldi episodes were in that list. A highly underrated Doctor.

Definitely funny and satisfying to see that all fans agree with "Blink" and "Heaven Sent" being the best. I also agree with the entire list - Such brutal episodes and strong storylines. However, I will always be sad to see that Capaldi wasn't valued enough with his representation and his storylines. "Listen", "Deep Breath", "The Mummy of Orient Express", "Husbands Of River Song" and even arguable "Hell Bent" are masterpieces. PS. Vincent and The Doctor gets me every time. Definitely top 3 in my list.

Pretty much agree with all the choices. To me, "The Waters of Mars" is the most poignant episode in the NuWho run, slapping 10 roundly in the face for his god complex and forgetting who the Doctor is. "Hell Bent," though not included because of two parts, remains my favorite NuWho episode. With a great script in hand, Capaldi simply kills it. Cheers....

I'm also very true to the TARDIS being my favorite character so I'm so glad I got to see the episode she turns human come in on this list. She's my favorite reoccurring character and Vincent is my favorite character ever.

Ok: I feel somewhat surprised here - NOTHING from Eccleston or Capaldi's stints as the Doc, seriously?? Admittedly I know this is the general publics list & I have some bias as Capaldi happens to be my favorite New Who Doctor, & I won't deny that Midnight & Vincent and the Doctor are among my personal favorite episodes - But for me, from Eccleston's time in the Tardis - 'Dalek' & 'The Empty Child' would be in any top ten, & as for Capaldi's run: as he's been my Dr, I could pick many - but like many I'd pick 'Heaven Scent' also 'The Zygon Inversion' just for THAT speech & also 'Listen' (just thought that one was all-round brilliant!). Realize that some may have been 'filtered out' what with WhoCulture having already done their own top 10, but still - the lack of either saddens!

So if you take out hell bent and blink, this really is the "3rd through 12th" favourite episode. But then you also took out two parters and hell bent is technically a part of a trilogy or two parter. So would you have taken that out anyway? Making the list 2 through 11? Anyway I think Midnight should have been #2 after Day of the Doctor
