Disciples III despite being quite janky was really atmosphepric. I've utterly enjoyed playing undead campaign. The lore, the music and the visuals were amazing at the time (at least for me) and created unique atmoshere. As for SpelForce, I hope they ll go back to the roots and make something like first Spellforce games where it was possible to switch strategy/3d person mode and would lean a bit more into rpg aspect of the game.

King's bounty might get a little annoying with grinding but It's such a wonderful game. Designs for locations and units are lovely, and despite a bit humorous approach worldbuilding and plot are actually pretty interesting. Mostly recommend playing the oldest version though(The Legend) cause there you can really feel the fairytail road from local knight trainee to princess-saving dragon-slaying hero. Most of expansions are... kind of half-grassed. Armored princess is pretty good too.

What do you think of King's Bounty 2? For me as an outsider who is interested in the series, King's Bounty in general seems to have more in common with tactical rpgs (divinity, expeditions) rather then 4x games.

Kings Bounty Crossworlds is my favourite King's Bounty. It is really polished and a fantastic challenge on Hardest difficulty. Only problem is the unbalanced boss fights.

The closest gameplay I got to Homm3 was really Eador, but not Imperium, Genesis with the New Horizons mod. Easily the deepest and the most difficult/immersing amongst the bunch, if you're willing to put in the time to learn. Warning though, the Campaign Mode can get very repetitive, so play the first for the tutorial, a couple more to see if you like it, then go straight to single player. Also, Imperium is very laggy and lacks visual clarity, while Genesis interface is really clean (although graphics are pixel-art-ish).

Disciples III vanilla was a turd, but Reincarnation is quite good. It suffers a bit from the same puzzle aspect as D2, in that you have to pick and choose your battles based on mob difficulty, but they polished it up pretty well from the mess it was on release.

Biggest issue I've had with D3 was how slow battles were, I also didn't like switch to HoMM style battlefield. But yeah... game looked amazing, the models, the art, atmosphere, everything was top notch... but I couldn't even force myself to finish campaign. Disciples 2 is my favorite game of this type, so I've really wanted to play and like D3...

Regarding King's Bounty - I recommend starting with Crossworlds. Play the Orcs on the March campaign. That is the best balanced and most polished of all the games. If you like it, then move on to the others. They all have little twists on the formula and adjustments to units that make them all distinct games, while still having the same core gameplay. One thing he didn't mention - many of the units and items available are random, giving it loads of replayability.

Only remake I actually really enjoyed was Diablo 2. It was remade with such amazing attention to details, I was really impressed. Things that were a few pixels wide before, got actual shape and features. Very cool, although I played it for like 25 hours comparing with some 3000 hours of original Diablo 2 :) Still I think it was worth the money. Now I have hope for Diablo 4

I would say Total War Warhammer 3 is pretty similar to Heroes. Even though it has giant real time battles, the world map features are very similar. You also travel a high fantasy world with a darker spin, conquer cities, build them, upgrade your army and heroes/lords, have special events, quests, equipment, spells, other skills, and other RPG mechanics. You have all the fantasy factions you can find in Heroes as well. Also, Heroes V design is much inspired by Warhammer.

As a genre fan I'll drop some comments on each game here AoW3: Pretty good game. It has some 4x elements and emphasis on single units rather than stacks. Has more depth than any Heroes game. AI is kinda weak tho. Spellforce Eo: No idea haven't played. Might check it out later. Looks more like an AoW clone rather than Heroes. Wartales: Mercanary management game that is on early access. You have a small mercanary band and have to feed them,pay them etc.. It's shaping up to be a pretty good game but isn't anything like Heroes other than turn based combat, and it has no place on this list. Urtuk: No idea haven't played. Will add to wishlist to check it out. Songs of Conquest: Very Heroes like game. The units you make give you different colored mana and you cast your spells according to that. Also not enough variance in units and you can't recruit from other races. Limited character progression. I found it very boring and shallow tbh. Endless Legend: Another 4x game like AoW. Combat takes place on world map. Interface and innovative systems might feel overwhelming at first. NO LAN which is the biggest turn-off. Also many dlcs. If it had LAN, it would be very good game. Kings Bounty: Heroes clone that focuses on main character and campaign. Empire management and town development is much more limited. Overall not a very good game. AoW Planetfall: Very good AoW game that takes place in space. You can install mods on your units to adapt to your opposition. Great game in my opinion. Combat is tactical. If you are ok with sci-fi, I recommend. Eador Imperium: Didn't play Imperium but used to play Genesis. It's like Heroes but it has much more depth. Reason I didn't play Imperium is the crashes and animations are very slow and clunky. Might provide some entertainment still. Disciples Lib: Tried to get into it, but it wasn't that fun for me. Combat mechanics are kinda slow and redundant. Maybe there is something on later stages of the game but at this point it's more of a campaign game like King's Bounty. You can't just start a random game like Heroes or AoW or most others on the list.

In terms of AI AoW 3 is very good compared to other TBS games. They may be harder if they use more meat but AI is stupid everywhere. Spellforce CoE is more direct successor of "Master of Magic" than AoW which took it's own way from the beginning. In fact it's a mix of MoM, simplified AoW 3 combat mechanics and it's own idea of moving city. King's Bounty better played on "impossible" without losses. If you know how to do this it saves a lot of time for buying new units

Better than Imperium ? I only have that one, and I quite like it. Though it's kind of annoying how long turns take. I mean, compared to a Civ game, this has much less provinces or tiles/hexagons. Less players in general. Some turns you or an AI might not even attack. Oh well, maybe it's just my not-so-new laptop. Anyway, back to the original question, can you tell me what's better in Genesis + New Horizons ? If it's good, I'll check it out.

@@Winnetou17 the base game is basically the same, the mod adds a bunch of new units, buildings and mechanics to keep the game fresh. If you don't mind the graphics i highly recommend it. Somehow it feels less buggy than Imperium too.

Well. While I agree in general. I sort of differ on the details I have stopped going to the movies about 5 years ago. (Last film I saw was Deadpool 2. Used to go about twice a month) Stopped buying AAA games I haven't watched MTV for 25 years. I feel much better for making all those decisions. :) I am playing a fan patch of Disciples 2 (Rise of the Mod) and also prefer HOMM 3 above most of the games here. Though I do quite like Liberation and Songs of Conquest is good now and likely to be fantastic on release.

I still prefere Master of Orion 2 over anything else with its mod to play it glitch free, clean in the highest resolutions, and some Heroes 2,3,4 and AoW1+Shadow Magic all the late sequels are a disgrace like disneys fan fiction of Star Wars some greedy corporates try to get our money with nostalgia, but most of the time lack its original creatives, sometimes few of them play along for the big and easy money. definately indie gaming is the way to go now. Dominions is a really good fantasy war game that does not care about graphics, but never drasticly changes with each sequels only add more content - thats how it should be anyway.

There are a couple of similar games with mixed reviews which I've looked into trying, does anyone have any experience with either: Immortal Realms: Vampire Wars or Royal Bounty HD ? Eador: Imperium seems interesting but there are reports about it being very buggy to this day. Some other good games of this type: Legends of Eisenwald, Fantasy General II, Fort Triumph, Warlock: Master of the Arcane + Warlock 2: The Exiled, Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes + Sorcerer King: Rivals and Master of Magic (the 2022 remake).

Try the Master of Magic remake. As I mentioned in my other comment, it's far more ambitious then any other game on the list. You can literally stop time, raise mana generating volcanos on the map, change the terrain, command chaos mutated flying dwarven hammerhands that are immune to non-magical weapons, summon dragons, create artifacts, lead heroes into battle etc. You name it, you can do it.

Eador Imperium is a dumpster fire and the studio that made it basically did a rug-pull pretending to fix it just to abandon it as soon as the peak sales finished. I tried very hard to give it a chance but I had to stop playing it in order to save my sanity. Eador Masters of the Broken World is somewhat more stable but also more limited version of the game. Eador Genesis is the game you want to get if you want to try the franchise. It is older and has simple 2D graphic but it feels like a complete game and mediocre 2D graphics are still better than bad 3D ones that crash your pc. Not to mention it costs like 10 times less than the Imperium/MotBW on Steam and it has active fan support to this day including fan expansions that make it basically the the most developed game of them all. There is fan made expansion Eador New Horizons that is supposed to be stand alone so you could even try it for free (I don't know how the licensing works in this case but you could always drop that 0.5 euro on Eador Genesis in order to feel justified playing this mod.) and the last I checked the newest patch was dropped around 3 months ago.

They went bankrupt shortly after Heroes 4 launched (which is why Heroes 4 lacked a bit). I have to say, I still don't get why people like HoMM 5. I like 3 and 4, but 5, I tried it like 2 years ago and it drove me insane that such an old game was running so slow. I actually liked HoMM 6 a bit more, though I haven't played that much either one, so I can't give a fair score. Anyway, back to the topic... they stopped making good HoMM games because the original devs went away. There's other teams now who are doing it. And they were kind of trying, but soulless publishers, I think, never gave them a fair chance. And budget. Only wanting to capitalize on the franchise with quick mediocre-at-best games that didn't had time to be properly baked.

In Age of Wonders I start building in all my towns at turn one and I have no problem building anything till the end of the game. Thing is not to build useless stuff. Necromancers have issue with money but they have tons of magic and can steamroll anybody. If you want money play dwarves or rogue or cats or theorat. Description that money is short in AOW is just not true.

@@ColdBeer Not elder rings reference but I've played tons of other games where I was frustrated I couldn't build sh*t like Total War series or Civiliaztion. I am good at all those games but the comment about "money problems" is just not valid in this case. What could be valid is that some end game spells your Rogue enemy has are broken. Also that late game only Warlord is a viable enemy. Another thing you could point out is that if you are inexperienced you could be overrun by hostile units that spawn all over the map. Diplomacy doesn't work and you can't get an ally even if you are both Elves, both Pure Good and you are 10 times stronger than him. (Those are examples of problematic stuff in this game). Those are all valid issues. Money in this game is not. Hope this helps for your next video.

Compared to homm III the animations in all of these are crap. There can never be a heroes follow up - face it.

Disciples 2 is far better game than Disciples Liberation. Just a few negatives of Disciples Liberation: - Boring long battles- i hope you enjoy waiting when enemy Has 11 units... - No quick battle, no option to make battles faster (200% is still to slow). There fd "quick battle" option, but only for minor battles, and ofcourse not for all of them... - Technically you can build all units, BUT you don't have enough space, not enough gold, or not enough reputation to freely experiment. - Shitty game economy - you can but every single one of the resorsues, BUT you can't sell anything for gold. You always have surplus of all resources beside gold, which is most needed one. - Shitty random equipment for main character. Every piece of armor od only stats boost- nothing more, you find hundrets of equipment through out the games, and you can't even sell this trash for gold... - Main character- unlikeable wh*re who wants bang everything that can move and have at least one hole... - Bad dialogue, and missing voice lines - Hexagon grid- and again mighty Dragon has shitty compressed model, just so it can fit one hex... Is it that hard to make the field consist of squares? so that small units occupy 1 square and large units 4? Developers could make a game based on the best installment (Disciples 2) , but they decided to make the game base of the worst (Disciples 3) That's why my version of "Disciples: Liberation" is a pirate one- very easy to find and download. Don't give them your money. they had a chance to make a great game, and they fuc*ed it up...

@@ColdBeer I just glanced over the list, watched "the bit" just now, my bad. That being said you i think you didn't play D2, you were are probably to young...you missed out. It's not about the nostalgia for the doom and gloom, edgy dark gothic it's about choice and mechanics. I played HOMM 1,2 and than 3, when D2 came out i tried it and liked it more because of how you grow attached to your party, in HOMM those are just easily replaced troops. Today you can only find clones of HOMM as with all mainstream stuff, that's the main difference, HOMM became mainstream. Back in the day there were lots and lots of RTS games were many tried to innovate but most were StarCraft clones...same with each gaming era. West Wood studio was canibalized for nothing...is this nostalgia or actual lack of RTS games. Live long enough to see things you liked disappear, to only be replaced by mediocrity (and this is not tied to games).

Dude, I'm 40 years old, I played both Disciples and Disciples 2 when they were released :) I still even have pirated CD of D2 somewhere in the garage. I just don't get attached to them. For example, I played StarCraft: Brood War for nine years. NINE YEARS, KARL!, but when StarCraft 2 came out - I never touched Brood War ever again. SC2 was soooo much better! And, speaking outside the gaming context - I like the world now way more than it was before.

@@ColdBeer Take that as a compliment than, if you are 40. Yes i feel the same about Star Craft, SC2 is overall a better game, improved in every aspect. I do not feel like that about Disciples 3 or Liberation, i see them like they were trying to move away from the core gameplay.

disciples liberation is very bad. The city building is crap. Might as well get rid of it. Units are suppose to gain exp than change class, but they got rid of them. So there's no real point in leveling them since you can recruit one at your max level anytime. They gave companion which have limit break skills that will decimate enemy which also defeat the purpose of getting any other unit. They tried to add alot of RPG element into a tactical army building game. End up ruining all army building mechanic.

The truth that there's no games like HoMM just because HoMM is not about tactics, strategy and other things 4x strategy games about it's just about building chains of heroes for transferring the units. That's why "Songs of Conquest" is a fail it's consist from things which AoW fans hate in HoMM and has nothing what HoMM fans really appreciate. And SoC gives very few stacks for the units from the start to use the standart and the only HoMM tactic of using single-unit stacks for taking the damage and saving the main army. AoW 3 economic is based on taking a rewards from clearing the treasure sites, so I've no idea how there can be no money until you have too big army which requres to much upkeep. "Conquest of Eo" is a hybrid between AoW 3 (simplified tactical combat mechanics) and MoM but for now it looks empty. "Endless Legend" is more like Civilization and it's combat system sucks. "King's Bounty" is not a strategy because there's no resourse collection and producing units. It's RPG with tactical combats with similar to HoMM stack system but if fact it's very different. And there was 5 games in the seria. They're all separate games which can have their own DLCs. the 3rd game "Crossroads" incorporates the 2nd whcih is much better than the 1rd. The last 2 games created not by Katauri were pices of shit. AoW Planetfall with all DLCs has 8 playable races and 7 minor. "Eador Imperium" is very buggy. But previous game has it's fans. In fact I've no idea how far it's known it was developed by a single Russian programmer. Well at least he did better tactical combat than the whole Disciples 3 team. For me it's too slow. Disciples Liberation is not a strategy too. It's RPG. Wartales IIRC is a wargame not a strategy.
