We plan on releasing some more videos showing off some new features relatively soon, since we've got a bit more of the Factorio-like logistics gameplay locked in, and we just added a prototype for a new dynamic lighting system, which allows the game to have fully 3D lighting and shadowing, despite everything being 2D sprites. Also btw, we are no longer just a 2-man team; we picked up a third developer late last year.

You're missing the biggest one... Beyond All Reason! I'm just popping in to reinforce that Frostpunk is an absolutely incredible gaming experience and that Frostpunk 2 is definitely my most anticipated game of the year. Something I notice is that a lot of people have games in their library that seemingly exist just to proverbially stress them out for extended periods of time, yet they'll find it enjoyable or even relaxing. Frostpunk is one of my personal favorites because you're just stunlocked in an evil video game Sisyphean loop of "Okay we were struggling, but I think our city is back on tra--" before the game throws the 47th consecutive steel chair at you, and I love every second of it. With regard to the small dev team on DORF, ill say this: one of my favorite games of all time, Starsector, also is an indie game, and has 4 developers. When I got it it was a bit small, had its rough corners but also some really cool concepts. Now? It is an expansive, moddable universe with huge player freedom that feels smooth to play and is my all time favorite game. That took 10 years. So. The small dev team will definitely mean DORF takes time to come into its own, but I hope that it too can become something absolutely amazing
@shadowreaver185110 ай бұрын
Falling Frontier is another indie Space RTS which for much of it's development cycle was the work of one man. The game has had many delays but the developer was able to secure a sponsor and the game play looks amazing. So many video games suck because the Developers cut corners, make promises that they can't keep and then don't spend enough time perfecting the gameplay and ironing out all the bugs before bringing their game to market. So if you have a game being made by a small number of people who are proud of their creation and aren't bound to some mega corporation then you can actually get a decent game that surpasses all expectations and actually lives up to the hype. True Works of Art can't be rushed and are well worth the wait.

there hasn't been a good RTS since SC2, except beyond all reason which is so niche it makes supcom approachable. at least supcom had a pretty well-made and lengthy campaign for the gamerdads to 10 APM their way through. idiots have been making videos like this one for a decade right here on youtube. "my list of 20 upcoming RTS that are coming up soon totally going to be awesome" and then they all turn out not to release or to be crap. this one is no different, except that it's smart enough not to pretend that RTS are back but that "strategy" (real-time not necessarily included) is, uhhhh, well the games are making him excited to play them! sure, sure. remember GREY GOO? remember ashes of the singularity? spellforce 3? ancestor legacy? starship troopers terran command? that one just came out with massive franchise recognition and it still barely blipped on the radar. also it sucked ass, making even C&C4 look deep, and completely failed to deliver on its aesthetic, by underplaying it instead of hamming it up like they should've. but I digress. the list goes on and on and on and they're all, at best, the definition of "mid", not an original thought or exceptionally executed mechanic to make them noteworthy among them. and all of them are only ever mentioned in lists like this video's pre-release, completely forgotten about as soon as they come out. SupCom released in 2007. It was the last time RTS tried to do something exciting, expanding its scale. Beyond all reason is just supcom but more refined. Starcraft 2 released in 2010, which was the last time a RTS came out that was remotely mainstream. And then they stopped making them. All these shitty newer games just look like games from the year 2000 but worse than the releases back then. Good on the solo developers and other indies for releasing these projects, but as a consumer it's absolute fucking drek and not "looking up" at all.
@Barbarossa9711 ай бұрын
@@MrCattlehunterFinally a good comment. RTS is so underdeveloped it is criminal. I blame the low IQ of audiences and developers alike. SupCom (1) and SC2 were the last great games in the genre. The only hope is sanctuary: Shattered sun - even though it is just the actual SupCom 2.

Or is something not being a multi-billion dollar e-sports fuckfest enough to disqualify it from all popularity, despite selling 150-250k copies How about Battlefleet Gothic? Or does that not count because it's not a "real rts", despite selling 750,000 copies Halo Wars 2? Not my cup of tea, but it's had a pretty loyal playerbase for a while They are Billions sold more than 1.5 million copies, or is that not an RTS because it's not multiplayer? Sins of a Solar Empire? Northgard? Honorable mention: Dawn of War: Ultimate Apocalypse Dude, you're either just a massive snob, extremely exclusionary on what an "RTS" is, or genuinely blind. Just because something isn't as popular as SC, doesn't mean it failed, or that it was tiny. I want giant, overpowered super units, flying tanks, guns the size of skyscrappers ! Give me the rule of cool damn it ! With Tempest Rising I think my biggest gripe is the terrible visual design, where every unit just blends in with every other. Your blob of units becomes just that, a blob of units, as opposed to any Starcraft, Warcraft, or C&C game where every unit has its own unique, distinct design and silhouette that can instantly be picked out from a crowd. It also speaks to just how uninteresting most of the units look, they look like an amateur designer's first generic work on a mod for another game, not something that came off the desk of a professional artist.

The thing about Stormgates scope is that most of it can be achieved by just not being greedy. The whole custom game part is covered by shipping the dev tools that they use to make the game with the game. Adding a menu to load custom game data created with those dev tools (a custom game launcher) is about half a days work for a developer who is arguing online about how terran is OP at the same time. The scope really isn't that big if they don't have to control every little thing players/modders can do to sell more horse armor.

Last Train Home and Cataclismo are 2 games I didn't know I wanted. I have been looking forward to Frostpunk 2 and Homeworld 3 for years now. Also, you gotta Play Homeworld and Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak.

This is a neat list. It's cool to see so much variety in visuals and gameplay. I'm also struck by how many strategy games are being made by tiny teams. Manor Lords just came out on early access and that was made by one guy too.

Grant you should play Deserts of Kharak, it plays like the main series Homeworld games but with modern RTS quality of life features, its a great introduction to series. The campaign isn't too long so its not a big time commitment. Also it has the best sound design on any RTS I have ever played.

Heya, i have a friend that had the opportunity of playing 2 of the closed betas for Outpost Infinity Siege, the devs said multiple times the main gameplay loop will be solo and it was confirmed in the tests, when you are exploring and gathering ressources, you are by yourself. However, you can call friends on the final extraction day where the big base defence phase happen during wich the most ressources you decide to take, the more difficult and long that defence will be so a little help is always appreciated. Let me be clear, this is an FPS Tower defense game with extraction shooter elements that also combines RTS, Mech piloting, base building and some roguelike elements (when your character die, if it's not the main character that litteraly has a plot armor bc of story, they are permanently lost and so is the equipement you had and the ressources you gathered in that expedition). Truly my most anticipated game for 2024 and i'm so glad the devs are beeing both ambitious and yet still responsive to the testers reports when it comes to the gameplay loop. I won't say anything else because.... you know.... NDA but i strongly believe i'm gonna be spending hours on this game when it's out.

Although I disagree with the order, especially the number one, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I grew with RTS, from WC1 to 3, a bit of starcraft, plenty of AoE and AoM, even LOTR:TBFME, then I became an addict to the custom maps of Frozen Throne, which I assume we all RTS fans did, at least a little bit... It's been years since I found a new RTS that seemed to catch my interest, and this video has at least a coupe of them. I thank you for real, and let's hope most of these titles don't disapoint.

@TheHalogen13111 ай бұрын
@@sekh765 Yeah, me too. I'm rarely getting "cautiously optimistic" these days (I assume, often incorrectly, that most projects will be crap), but this one I really want to be good. It's being made by like one or two people, so while they have clarity of vision, I'm afraid of the amount of manpower required. We'll see.

I will say, if you ever do a Command & Conquer retrospective, I have some stories to tell about tiberian sun lan parties. Me & friends did it for years, having spam fights, overbuilt base defenses and territories, recoveries, stalemates, turtling to victory, etc. Tiberian Sun wasn't very competitive, and it was so unbalanced that it self-corrects in a war of attrition, but man, TibSun was so much fun. Even the standalone mod Twisted Insurrection was equally fun. Under the right mindset, friendships can be put to the test with that game.

Yeah... about that. At release dimon has said that there will only be the empire (black and red industrial faction in trailers) that is available to play. He isin't against the idea of being able to play other factions, but it would be a lot of additional work apparently.
@marcelroodtdev9 ай бұрын
For Outpost Infinity Siege, it reminds me a little bit of the Savage: Battle for Newerth premise. Savage had two teams fighting each other, with a player from each time playing as the RTS Commander, and the rest as units. What a concept! I kinda wish Silverback were still trying to hone that, instead of going all-in on Heroes of Newerth.

Because Warno is better
@stitch771007 ай бұрын
Because it's a very niche tactics game posing as a strategy one (like Wargame, Warno and World in conflict, for example) Also, because it has a very small fanbase, but they are very vocal about the range, and produce a lot of content for it, giving the impression that it is more successful than what it really is. (I'm not saying it's bad or whatever, only that is not well-known yet)

My only problem with Frostpunk 2 is that the world is so cool, I would have loved another style of game to experience it in. I'm not big on survival crafters, but I would drop all my money to play as a group of Scouts or Hunters. Or something in Tesla City before it falls. Or a stealth game creeping about the remains of a city while outsiders try to occupy it and loot it for parts. Regardless, I'm a massive fan of 11bit pushing their world forward. They weren't interested in a new coat of paint and pumping out the same thing, these are guys who have so much love and passion for this series, and respect for the fans. They've got my money as soon as they enable preorders.

Cool thing about Homeworld is that it uses 3 dimensions. You can command your fast ships to go under enemy capital ship to attack its weak point. It's really cool that they double down on use of environment. It was in the original game but not to core mechanic extent.

Learning about so many new RTS games to keep and eye on is a feeling I could get used to! Especially looking forward to Outpost: Infinity Siege. Since people are coming here to look at prospective RTS games I should also give a shoutout to Beyond All Reason (BAR) which is a completely free and open source game inspired by Total Annihilation. Being able to have thousands of units with no lag and being able to resurrect your own and even enemy units are some highlights for me.

Frostpunk was great fun. Absolute must play imo. I wanted it to be more involved or at least have a mode where you can keep going. I didn't want frostpunk to end. Outpost looks to be very unique, if they nail it, it will be a classic for sure. That's tough to pull off though.

When I heard the first report that Frostpunk 2 would come up, I wasn't too hyped about it. I thought the first title worked super well as a self-contained experience. But I absolutely love the focus of part 2. Going from the small to the big makes so much sense. It's not just a "the same but slightly different" like for example Subnautica Below Zero, but a true "sequel" that so far seems to have a great combination of carrying over with the lore, style and atmosphere while going for just the right evolution for its gameplay.
