Thank you for the coverage! We plan on releasing some more videos showing off some new features relatively soon, since we've got a bit more of the Factorio-like logistics gameplay locked in, and we just added a prototype for a new dynamic lighting system, which allows the game to have fully 3D lighting and shadowing, despite everything being 2D sprites. Also btw, we are no longer just a 2-man team; we picked up a third developer late last year.

I'm just popping in to reinforce that Frostpunk is an absolutely incredible gaming experience and that Frostpunk 2 is definitely my most anticipated game of the year. Something I notice is that a lot of people have games in their library that seemingly exist just to proverbially stress them out for extended periods of time, yet they'll find it enjoyable or even relaxing. Frostpunk is one of my personal favorites because you're just stunlocked in an evil video game Sisyphean loop of "Okay we were struggling, but I think our city is back on tra--" before the game throws the 47th consecutive steel chair at you, and I love every second of it. The City Must Survive.

You're missing the biggest one... Beyond All Reason! It's an open source Total Annihilation / Supreme Commander style RTS in a modern engine that handles way more units and players. 8v8 is the standard match size and I have seen replays of 25 vs 25 players. It has 2 complete factions, at least one more in the works, and in it's current unoptimized state can handle 4000 to 5000 units without lag. It's exactly what it says on the tin: Beyond All Reason

With regard to the small dev team on DORF, ill say this: one of my favorite games of all time, Starsector, also is an indie game, and has 4 developers. When I got it it was a bit small, had its rough corners but also some really cool concepts. Now? It is an expansive, moddable universe with huge player freedom that feels smooth to play and is my all time favorite game. That took 10 years. So. The small dev team will definitely mean DORF takes time to come into its own, but I hope that it too can become something absolutely amazing
@shadowreaver1851

Falling Frontier is another indie Space RTS which for much of it's development cycle was the work of one man. The game has had many delays but the developer was able to secure a sponsor and the game play looks amazing. So many video games suck because the Developers cut corners, make promises that they can't keep and then don't spend enough time perfecting the gameplay and ironing out all the bugs before bringing their game to market. So if you have a game being made by a small number of people who are proud of their creation and aren't bound to some mega corporation then you can actually get a decent game that surpasses all expectations and actually lives up to the hype. True Works of Art can't be rushed and are well worth the wait.

there hasn't been a good RTS since SC2, except beyond all reason which is so niche it makes supcom approachable. at least supcom had a pretty well-made and lengthy campaign for the gamerdads to 10 APM their way through. idiots have been making videos like this one for a decade right here on youtube. "my list of 20 upcoming RTS that are coming up soon totally going to be awesome" and then they all turn out not to release or to be crap. this one is no different, except that it's smart enough not to pretend that RTS are back but that "strategy" (real-time not necessarily included) is, uhhhh, well the games are making him excited to play them! sure, sure. remember GREY GOO? remember ashes of the singularity? spellforce 3? ancestor legacy? starship troopers terran command? that one just came out with massive franchise recognition and it still barely blipped on the radar. also it sucked ass, making even C&C4 look deep, and completely failed to deliver on its aesthetic, by underplaying it instead of hamming it up like they should've. but I digress. the list goes on and on and on and they're all, at best, the definition of "mid", not an original thought or exceptionally executed mechanic to make them noteworthy among them. and all of them are only ever mentioned in lists like this video's pre-release, completely forgotten about as soon as they come out. SupCom released in 2007. It was the last time RTS tried to do something exciting, expanding its scale. Beyond all reason is just supcom but more refined. Starcraft 2 released in 2010, which was the last time a RTS came out that was remotely mainstream. And then they stopped making them. All these shitty newer games just look like games from the year 2000 but worse than the releases back then. Good on the solo developers and other indies for releasing these projects, but as a consumer it's absolute fucking drek and not "looking up" at all.

@@MrCattlehunterFinally a good comment. RTS is so underdeveloped it is criminal. I blame the low IQ of audiences and developers alike. SupCom (1) and SC2 were the last great games in the genre. Beyond All reason had some potential but then they designed the games as a playmobile with hideous zoomer-fortnite-vomit-colours and only 2 (same playing) factions. The only hope is sanctuary: Shattered sun - even though it is just the actual SupCom 2.

@@MrCattlehunter Christ alive, they didn't ham it up enough in Terran Command? wtf are you on about? The game wasn't deep, but it added enough mechanics level-to-level to keep pretty engaging, and they hammed it up so fucking much. How about Diplomacy Is Not An Option? Or is something not being a multi-billion dollar e-sports fuckfest enough to disqualify it from all popularity, despite selling 150-250k copies How about Battlefleet Gothic? Or does that not count because it's not a "real rts", despite selling 750,000 copies Halo Wars 2? Not my cup of tea, but it's had a pretty loyal playerbase for a while They are Billions sold more than 1.5 million copies, or is that not an RTS because it's not multiplayer? Sins of a Solar Empire? Northgard? Honorable mention: Dawn of War: Ultimate Apocalypse Dude, you're either just a massive snob, extremely exclusionary on what an "RTS" is, or genuinely blind. Just because something isn't as popular as SC, doesn't mean it failed, or that it was tiny. RTS' were just fucking massive back in the day, able to launch whole franchises, they've gone from industry shaking behemoths to just another genre.

With Tempest Rising I think my biggest gripe is the terrible visual design, where every unit just blends in with every other. Your blob of units becomes just that, a blob of units, as opposed to any Starcraft, Warcraft, or C&C game where every unit has its own unique, distinct design and silhouette that can instantly be picked out from a crowd. It also speaks to just how uninteresting most of the units look, they look like an amateur designer's first generic work on a mod for another game, not something that came off the desk of a professional artist.

2:31 that's all you had to say, i will try that game out now. My personal issue with RTS is how hard it is for a casual player to get into the game, you star and there are just so many numbers and things happening at the same time that it's easy to just get lost. Starcraft campaign have a bit of that but it's way more tame compared to some games on this list tho, still, i'm curious to see and try some of those games. I will get Frostpunk 2 because i loved the first one, even if the second game seems to add way more numbers tho, and i might try the DORF one, who knows, it might be nice.

Actually... It's not true. MOBA games requires a lot, a lot more knowledge to get you going and you can end up with needing to know 9 new units after first game, and then again similar experience... And yet genre became quite popular. RTS was most popular genre on PC for a while and while obviously nowadays it's not even close to that status it says enough about hard hard is to get into a genre that was the most popular one. Which means, it's not that hard at all.

I totally agree with your top pick, I can't wait for DORF and I am so glad they decided to ignore multiplayer balance or Esports, which I feel are the bane of developers everywhere, as they gimp the rest of the game in order to try to reach that fabled Esport Nirvana, and simply end up destroying their product and work as a result. I don't want perfectly balanced units that make everything in a multiplayer matchup with guys with 600 APM viable ! I want giant, overpowered super units, flying tanks, guns the size of skyscrappers ! Give me the rule of cool damn it ! Also, interestingly enough, with DORF and Industrial Annihilation, there seems to be some interest in automation game and RTS hybrids, and I'm wondering what you think about that ? Because personally I absolutely LOVE the concept.

I'm glad DORF is starting the hype train for RTS fans, the OpenRA engine is definitely underrated and love that its getting attention. I'm hoping for C&C fans the Combined Arms mod gets more attention too. Combined arms combines aspects of the Tiberian and Red Alert series all in the C&C 1 style. I absolutely love the Scrin in the old C&C style and it has a fleshed out campaign after it's recent update of only a month or so ago.

Technically we are using OpenRA as a basis, though the engine will be so heavily modified with new features by the end of development that it'll be a pretty wildly different beast by the time the game ships.

I never promote my stuff but since I'm a huge fan Grant what's the harm in a shameless plug... I made a free Dune2/C&C inspired tiny RTS called Eudora a few years back and have been working on a major sequel but it's on the backburner r/n. Very interested in Tempest Rising obviously no matter how creatively bankrupt it may seem on the surface (guilty of doing this myself) it's like they know exactly what we want. As an aside I'm often mystified that Petroglyph keeps making RTS games as well, they're going to be releasing a sequel to 8-Bit armies soon which should have been an honorable mention on this list! Also DORF looks astounding, like KKND and RA2 smashed together!

The thing about Stormgates scope is that most of it can be achieved by just not being greedy. The whole custom game part is covered by shipping the dev tools that they use to make the game with the game. Adding a menu to load custom game data created with those dev tools (a custom game launcher) is about half a days work for a developer who is arguing online about how terran is OP at the same time. The scope really isn't that big if they don't have to control every little thing players/modders can do to sell more horse armor.

Heya, i have a friend that had the opportunity of playing 2 of the closed betas for Outpost Infinity Siege, the devs said multiple times the main gameplay loop will be solo and it was confirmed in the tests, when you are exploring and gathering ressources, you are by yourself. However, you can call friends on the final extraction day where the big base defence phase happen during wich the most ressources you decide to take, the more difficult and long that defence will be so a little help is always appreciated. Let me be clear, this is an FPS Tower defense game with extraction shooter elements that also combines RTS, Mech piloting, base building and some roguelike elements (when your character die, if it's not the main character that litteraly has a plot armor bc of story, they are permanently lost and so is the equipement you had and the ressources you gathered in that expedition). Truly my most anticipated game for 2024 and i'm so glad the devs are beeing both ambitious and yet still responsive to the testers reports when it comes to the gameplay loop. I won't say anything else because.... you know.... NDA but i strongly believe i'm gonna be spending hours on this game when it's out.

I know it wasn't the focus or anything but... I thought Fire Emblem Engage was actually very good from a gameplay perspective (though story was very mid). The hard and below difficulties were pretty easy, but the Maddening difficulty for the first time felt like the right difficulty with you having to plan around the engage systems to be able to properly fight unfairly statted enemies.

Last Train Home is also extremely anti-historic. The legion was a legion - it was a massive force that held the entire railroad by iron fist. They weren't the poor victims of war they are portrayed in the game but rather an opportunistic and a very cruel force acting under the orders of the intervention forces (until they eventually struck a deal with red army, selling out a white commander and left) In short: they were kind of assholes and generally remembered not kindly in towns that they were travelling through. And the game tries to whitewash that.

Glad to see some Command & Conquer type strategy games coming out. C&C was my first ever RTS and I'm very fond of my memories playing it. Same really can be said for Homeworld. So a good year hopefully ahead Sins of a Solar Empire is a game I've praised many a time but I absolutely refuse to even install the Epic launcher much less put a dime into it. For Outpost Infinity Siege, it reminds me a little bit of the Savage: Battle for Newerth premise. Savage had two teams fighting each other, with a player from each time playing as the RTS Commander, and the rest as units. What a concept! I kinda wish Silverback were still trying to hone that, instead of going all-in on Heroes of Newerth.

A game concept I've recently been interested in but never seen realised is an RTS where you design you own unit pre-sets in a space engineers style, with PCU being similar to supply, complete with having your own miners or harvesters and even scraping ships to fuel the economy, while you build up your own custom designed fleet. Biggest problem I would anticipate is the resource intensity to run it and actually being able to control the ships effectively while still having the design be important to the outcome. Just a curious and not at all thought through idea
