10 Best SUVs 2021

I talk about the 10 best SUVs for 2021 & tell you why they are worth the wait. 4 of them are electric SUVs which is exciting since the Tesla Model Y is so successful. This list only includes SUVs that are completely new models or substantially updated for the model year 2021. No vehicles that start at more than $70,000 were included since that’s about twice the price of an average car sold today.

10. 2021 Ford Bronco Sport - This compact SUV starts at $26,600. It brings the looks of the rugged Bronco but is based on the Ford Escape platform which is a car based crossover. The Bronco Sport seats 5 and has a large cargo space area of 65 cu ft thanks to its boxy styling. It has a standard 1.5L turbo 3 cyl engine pumping out 181 hp and 190 lb.-ft. of torque. Optional 2.0L turbo 4 cyl gives you 245 hp and 275 ft-lbs of torque. The Sport has standard 4 wheel drive which is a nice bonus. The only transmission is an 8 speed automatic. The Bronco Sport will tow 2000 lbs with the 1.5L engine and 2200 lbs with the 2.0L engine. It is expected to be available in December 2020. I have the Bronco Sport on this list because it’s just such a cool looking SUV and should be one the few crossover SUVs that can go offroad. I much prefer the Bronco Sport’s rugged appearance to the Ford Escape even though it’s based on that chassis. It’s main competition is the Jeep Cherokee.
9. 2021 Nissan Rogue This is Nissan’s best selling vehicle so it’s critical that it succeeds in the market. The Rogue is Nissan’s compact SUV and competes with the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Ford Escape amongst others. The new Rogue pricing has not been announced yet but Nissan is typically slightly less expensive than the competition so let’s hope for that to continue with the 2021 Rogue. The Rogue will feature an updated 2.5L 181HP 4 cylinder engine which is a 11 horsepower improvement over the predecessor. It will be driven by a CVT and be available in front or all wheel drive. The Rogue is expected to come soon in the fall of 2020. I am excited for the Rogue because it rides on a brand new platform with a new multilink rear suspension which should improve ride and handling. Nissan’s been on a roll as of late with its new products.
8. 2021 Kia Sorento is Kia’s midsize SUV that is available with 3 rows of seating. It slots between the compact Sportage and the larger Telluride. I have the Sorento on this list because while the current generation Sorento has been a solid SUV, its bigger brother the Telluride was such a big hit that I expect great things again for Kia. The expected engine is a 2.5L turbocharged 4 cylinder with 277 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Kia will also bring a hybrid and a plug in hybrid in the future.
7. 2022 Nissan Ariya. The Ariya is Nissan’s brand new EV crossover that is expected to be available in the summer of 2021. It’s on this list because it’s a legitimate Tesla Model Y and Mustang Mach E competitor. Nissan’s been building EVs for 11 years so they have a lot of experience with the Leaf. With a range of approximately 220 miles for the base and 300 miles for the larger battery version, the Ariya should have competitive range and performance.
6. 2021 Genesis GV80. If you have been paying attention, you know that the Korean automaker twins Hyundai and Kia have been building some amazing vehicles lately like the Sonata, the Telluride, and the Stinger. Until now, they have had the well received G70, G80, and G90 sedans. The GV80 is their first SUV and it just looks so nice.
5. 2021 VW ID4. VW’s new slogan is “Electric for the millions, not the millionaires” Love that.
4. 2021 Chevy Tahoe, GMC Yukon, Cadillac Escalade. I grouped these body on frame GM cousins together.
3. 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime is my favorite Toyota right now and that’s saying something since they make a lot of great cars. It’s a plug-in hybrid with 42 miles of all electric range + 600 miles of total range.
2. Ford Bronco -- long awaited return of the legendary off road capable Bronco returns after 25 year absence.
Before we get to #1, I have some honorable mentions that just missed making the list: They are the Kia Seltos, Buick Envision, Toyota Venza, and Hyundai Tucson.
1. 2021 Mustang Mach-E - This crossover is the biggest story for crossovers and SUVs in 2021 because this is the vehicle that may challenge the Tesla Model Y. First, it looks good. Even though it’s not based on the Mustang, it’s got a familiar shape. Two, it’s all electric with a range of up to 300 miles.
The Mach-E is expected to have a range between 210 to 300 miles.
