Germany in World War II, opted for the number of submarines, and not for the size. The German admirals their question was not "how big are our submarines (U-boat)" their question is "how many submarines (U-boat) do we have in combat" In the end, the 2 most successful countries in marine warfare during World War II was the US with its large aircraft carrier fleets, some 120 aircraft carriers built. And the second, the Germans with their Submarines (U-boat) more than 1200 submarines (U-boat) that wiped out the English merchant fleet, luckily for the Allies the US industry replaced the sinking fleet. That's why the real Allied fear was submarine warfare. What delayed the Allied invasion of Western Europe from 1942 to 1944 (Normandy).

I don't think the gun sub idea was well thought out. They couldn't really be armored like a surface ship. One good hole and it's a permanent submarine.

The attempt to equip submarines with large-caliber guns was probably influenced by World War I. At the time, submarines specialized in the destruction of commerce, targeting civilian vessels. Therefore, expensive torpedoes with short range and reliability problems were rarely used against unprotected transports. If a submarine approached a ship, surfaced, and fired a shell near the ship's direction of travel, the submarine would surrender. However, when armed merchant ships began to spread, gun battles developed, and as you say, there were cases of ships being hit and sunk. So some navies decided to install main guns on submarines that could fire longer-range and more powerful shells with high accuracy. In the end, the technology did not allow submarines to fire at sea for a long time.

France was like: "mm, today I will build a gun-armed cruiser submarine with a 2 x 203mm heavy cruiser turreted guns just before signing a treaty that prevents countries signing it to build submarines heavier than 2,000 tons and a mounted gun limit of 115mm"

The Imperial Japanese Navy only built submarine carriers because 😅 .........The submarine aircraft carrier is a submarine equipped with aircraft for observation or attack missions .These submarines saw their most extensive use during World War II, although their operational significance remained rather small .The most famous of them were the Japanese I-400-class submarines the largest submarines ever built by Imperial Japanese Navy (but only 3 built until end of the war). Some Japanese Submarine Carrier operate in America coast,Australia coast and Hindi Sea until end of the war .Like the Bombardment of Ellwood, the Battle of Los Angeles and "LOOKOUT AIR RAID!"/Oregon incident (The Lookout Air Raids were minor but historic Japanese air raids that occurred in the mountains of Oregon, several miles outside Brookings during World War II) America and France are different than Japanese, the cruiser submarine was a very large submarine designed to remain at sea for extended periods in areas distant from base facilities. Their role was analogous to surface cruisers, cruising distant waters, commerce raiding, and scouting for the battle fleet. Cruiser submarines were successful for a brief period of World War I, but were less successful than smaller submarines during World War II. Large submarines remained vulnerable to damage from defensively equipped merchant ships (DEMS), were slow to dive if found by aircraft, offered a large sonar echo surface, and were less able to defensively maneuver during depth charge attacks. Both type like Submarine carrier and Submarine cruiser are good...but not good like German U-Boat.German U boat are King of the Seawolf 😂 with his specialized doctrine of "Werewolf tactic" to sink more merchant ships than America, British and Japan.

A hybrid from the Japanese, french and German boats. Take the Japanese plain carrier. Add the guns from the French cruiser (but for merchant ships it's already oversized) Mix it up with the solid construction of the German u boat. Now you can send the plane out for scouting and give a distance shot, and got a sub that vat take a beating

Of course u-boats were successful sinking merchant ships, the U.S. was trying so desperately to supply their allies across the Atlantic ocean. The North Atlantic Ocean is petite and concentrated the busiest traffic routes in all of the seas, the highway of the shipping lines, to say the least millions of Europeans crossing it in search for a new life in America during the first half of the 20th century and Ocean Liners such as Titanic can easily show you how many vessels were out there. Japan didn't have to care about having a super fleet of u-boats, since they didn't serve their war conditions, a waste of resources it would have been

Well, the sizes of all 3 US subs are wrong. The Narwhal (V-5) and Nautilus (V-6) were 371 feet long. The Argonaut (V-4) was the largest of the US subs at 381 feet. Based on that I'd question other statistics for some of these other subs. Some of those may be incorrect as well.

Interesting fact. No British submarines was mentioned here, but as of 2023 Britain has the most advanced and powerfull submarine ever made so far. The Astute-class submarines. Yeah US fans I know you will come with the Virgina-class and Seawolf-class etc etc. Not long time ago there was a military drill between UK and US... One Astute-class submarine made their way inside into the US Carrier Group without being detected and managed to escape. :) "In 2012, during the joint exercise Fellowship, Astute performed simulated battles with the latest United States Navy Virginia-class submarine. Royal Navy Commander .... was quoted, "Our sonar is fantastic and I have never before experienced holding a submarine at the range we were holding USS New Mexico. The Americans were utterly taken aback, blown away with what they were seeing".

You do realize the US purposely loses war games for a reason right? Also The astute class held one submarine Just 1 not that special unlike how Virginia's, Ohios and Seawolfs can get near Russian and Chinese waters undetected. Please why is it everytime Europeans brag about their technology being better than American tech it's always in a military Drill and not a an actual patrol or combat mission? US likes to lose war games anyways for training purposes so it's not special😂. Besides a 40 year old los angeles class Sub sank a British carrier in a drill in 2013😂.

One hit and your dead. It would make sense when beeing submerged and surface when a ship arrives...but then you could just use torpedoes. The Germans made pure attack submarines, and they move back to target commercial ships, as the losses were massive...then they used the cannon due to torpedoes beeing so expensive. So yeah...what was the plan with a submersible gun boat

@@silvestrelechat4484 It would if you didn't count the fact that the gun could not fire if the sub was angled more than 8 degrees in any direction as it would flip it upon firing the guns, it could fire in three minutes after emerging from water but they forgot to add the turret turning time. So yeah, the gun was very unreliable, but hey, free airplane for scouting.

That's bullshit, nobody would want to make something that is useless😑. Yamato didn't gain any combat results is because they are afraid of losing it. As for the submarines, they simply adopted the wrong tactics, that's all. They are all powerful weapons used in the wrong way and wrong timing, far from useless.
