At 23 I had an ovary removed because it needed to go, they refused to do a full hysterectomy NOT because I might want kids, but because when you're young and induce menopause you're basically living with a deteriorating skeleton. They didn't want me to have osteoporosis in my 20's.

They were right. I went into menopause in my 20s because of chemo for Lupus. I have the bone density of an 80 year old while Im in my early 40s.

Our one-time family doctor always seemed to be a little off. By "off", I mean impaired. He always seemed a little glassy-eyed, spoke very slowly, and had to research his books for the simplest (to me) medical complaints. Eventually I changed insurances and he changed practices, so we no longer went to him. Years later, he was arrested for running a Medicaid scam, prescribing Oxycontin to anyone who asked (up to 50 a day!) out of his new practice. The recipients often then sold their prescribed drugs on the street. He pled guilty to multiple charged, was sentenced to 3 years in federal prison with five years of probation afterwards, and (obviously) lost his license.

In the 80s, in California, we had an anesthesiologist named William Miofsky. He was sexually abusing patients during surgeries. One of his victims was a 12 year old girl. If you're wondering how he accomplished this in the operating room filled with doctors and nurses, you're not alone

Noah is right. Anesthesia isn't a one and done thing. According to the newspaper articles at the time, he was hiding what he was doing behind surgical drapes. There's more details but I don't want to go into it. It's disgusting and he's a monster. It's alleged that any time a nurse tried to report what they thought was happening, they were told that they needed to be quiet or they'd be fired. The hospital denied this, of course. Regardless, it was the nurses that made sure that he was finally prosecuted and I applaud their courage

It is a well known fact that the US medical services, including prescription medication, are 4 to 5 times higher than any other country. Americans are going to other countries for treatments, sometimes with shady doctors.

Strangely enough, I'm in the midst of a battle with a surgeon who insists I need a surgery and I disagree. I especially disagree on the extent and urgency of it. Fortunately, I was brought up during the "question doctors if it doesn't seem right" generation of the 1970's, so I have. At this point I don't trust her to keep to her word, despite knowing I have to sign a consent form for any surgery-- because, of course, once the procedure begins she can always do as she wishes and claim, once she was in the midst of it, she felt it was necessary. Meanwhile, I'll be unable to object. Doctors. Stay away from them as long as you can. Eat right, drink more tea than coffee, exercise and you'll hardly ever need one.

I used to see a certain doctor who was a bit like John Cleese but he knew his stuff. Anyway, one day he wasn't around so I thought he was on holiday but this continued for months so on about the third visit I asked the doctor I was seeing "What happened to Dr.X" (actually I've forgotten his name). She made a sour face and after a bit of a pause told me he had taken all the money out of the practice, abandoned his wife and disappeared with the (16 year old) receptionist. I never heard any more about it so I don't know how it ended up but robbing a general practice in a low income area wouldn't exactly get him a Ronny Biggs lifestyle on the run.

There is a Doctor here in Nacogdoches Tx who was in 60 min that's done the same thing for years since the 80s and we have a small population of 65,000 and and shocked how many people defended him so I doubt anything like that would be done

When I was a teen I had a doctor who I now think had an agenda against poor and middle class people. Why do I think this? Two cases and a sudden end to his practice. The first case was me. I had (and still have) ringing in my ears constantly. Without any tests, he told my parents that my immune system was attacking my ears and I would eventually go deaf. He told them that there was a medication that would save my hearing but a side effect was that I would be sterile. My parents left the decision up to me and also told me that they would understand if I had a baby then got on the medication. I decided that I was not ready to have a baby at 16 but I wanted kids in the future more than I wanted my hearing. So I decided not to go on the medication. I am now 60, the mother of 4 and grandmother of 2. I still have my hearing. The other case was my neighbour. She had one baby and suspected that she was pregnant again. She went to the doctor for a pregnancy test (home tests wouldn’t be a thing for another 30 years). He told her to take this pill and if she wasn’t pregnant her period would start within a few days. She took the pill but her period didn’t start so she went back. He told her that sometimes it takes more than one dose so he gave her another pill. She took that one too. The next night she started hemorrhaging and went to the hospital. Turned out that she had a miscarriage. We both suspect that he gave her abortion pills because she was unemployed. A few months later patients who had appointments showed up one day to find the office permanently closed without warning or explanation.

I had a surgeon tell me I needed my gallbladder removed because I "utilized marijuana" in front of 3 staff and my daughter in my hospital room he then said you may want your friend to leave for the exam he was going to do I said that's not my friend it's my daughter he looked surprised I told him to see the door get the f out now and don't come back. The nurse and anesthesiologist were snickering and he did leave.

I'm a doctor; I have a PhD in philosophy and religion. Yet, even my own 11 year old son says, "you're not a real doctor." I tell him that I'm a different kind of doctor. Come to think of it, no one, including myself, takes it very seriously. Glad I have all those student loans.
