The ending of "The Mist" shows not only the US military, but Melissa McBride's character, who was in the store at the beginning of the movie, but left to get her kids and suggested the others do the same. Seeing HER rescued by the US military just minutes after killing his kid, a potential love-interest, and two elderly friends just drove the pointlessness even further.

@STEELRAIN I feel like a scene in the first sequel, "Freddy's Revenge" explains the first movie's ending. When the new protagonist, Jesse, discovers Nancy's hidden diary and begins to read it, we learn that the girl was temporarily placed in a mental hospital by her father, immediately after the events of the first film. Given the trauma she'd just been through, it's highly unlikely that she went without a fuss. Often, in such circumstances, a patient is tranquilized by EMTs. The first movie's last scene could be what Nancy saw, while she was under the influence of those heavy drugs. Also, "Freddy's Revenge" has an equally bleak ending, because it gives the impression that everyone, including Jesse, dies. (12/30/2022)

Being perfectly honest, i dont care if the movie has a happy ending, a bleak ending, a shocking ending... i care if it's a cohesive ending. If it makes sense within the story and fits the narrative, you can do whatever. A nice, bleak and cohesive ending is from "The Blackcoat's Daughter". Not just bleak, heartbreaking and at the same time, pointless, in the sense that the main character done a lot, but in the end, she was utterly alone.

I though the ending of The Road seemed kind of hopeful at first, but then the more I thought about it, it was just as bleak as the rest of the movie. The father's justfiable distrust cost him and his son allies in their fight for survival, which could have resulted in the father living longer. And while the son can now continue on with these new people, how long is that really going to last? It doesn't look like they've got any new ideas or plans. But considering the rest of the film, it could have been a lot more pessimistic, but it's far from hopeful. The closest we get to that is, "Ok."

Correction: It isn't the pet cemetery itself that is supernatural. It is the Native American burial ground BEYOND the pet cemetery that is supernatural. Not to mention all of the gravestones with the names of all of the pets that have undisturbed resting spots. Dude literally had to climb a barrier to get to evil side of the grave yard.

The original novella on which The Thing was based had an explicitly upbeat ending, with a small number of the researchers surviving in the context of being able to return to their base. On top of that, the Thing itself had mastered the technology of the beings who had brought it to earth in their crashed ship, and all this (including backpack-sized nuclear powerplants and antigravity) would now be available for humanity.

I love Carpenter's Apocalypse Trilogy (The Thing, Prince Of Darkness and In The Mouth Of Madness) so much, being a fan of The Thing since Day 1. So glad that people are appreciating the absolutely awesome practical effects that still hold up nearly 40 years later.

I can't remember cause it's been awhile since I've seen it but is Ben credited as "Ben the Black Man" And I absolutely love the fact that Pet Cemetery doesn't even try to hide the fact that evil shit is gonna happen if anyone buries anything in the cemetery it's not gonna end well and yet we not only have a movie but a sequel as well

I would venture to say that Romero wouldn't have taken credit for the reading because, like many other artists, he creates, and the rest of us interpret. When artists, on the other hand, try to front-load a reading into their movie, it inevitably makes the film cheaper, shoddier. I have one such movie in mind but I am going to keep that to myself.

I LOVED 28 days later and didn't even realize 28 weeks later was a sequel not just that they'd named it that to ride off the success of 28 days later.

I would have definitely included Martyr’s, A Serbian Film, and Inside on this list but that’s just me lol

Those are bleak from start to finish though.

I feel that A Serbian Film has way too many bleak moments to make the ending fit this list . Also , the film itself should not be listed very much just due to the graphic content . Yes, it is horror , but not far from the actual s**ff film being made in the movie . Political commentary is the base behind ASF which was made clear by the creator and I respect that . Too much advertisement about it if it were put on lists could be a bad idea to me . What do you think ?

The less I hear of A Serbian Film the better. I haven’t seen it but I have read what happens and heard commentaries from people who have seen it and every person said they wished they hadn’t. I usually don’t listen to people, but I listen to those people.

I’m a huge fan of horror. I like to curl up in a blanket and feel afraid, knowing fine well that what I’m watching isn’t real and that the tv screen separates me from these horrors that only exist in the imagination. A Serbian Film did not give me this feeling. It gnawed the pit of my stomach and made me feel sick. My sister was abused by someone at this church I used to go to and to see this subject matter used as popcorn entertainment shocked me.
