I also think that "The Library at Mount Char" is quite similar in atmosphere with "The Middlegame". Although I would say that The Library is much darker and bloodier. Maybe that's why I liked it more.

I haven’t read the two ya fantasy books, but you description remained me Among Others by jo Walton. This one isn’t ya, but it follows a young girl emerged in this fantasy world but she has to deal with her mother who is some form of evil force in the book. It won the nebula in 2014 and I really enjoyed it.

If you liked Wild Beauty, it sounds like you would also like The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman. It's the prequel to Pragical Magic and is about a lineage of witches who cannot find true love because their lovers are always cursed to die. Their ancestor was betrayed by her lover so she cursed her entire family. It's magical Realism and it's literally such a beautiful book!

It's funny, I've read quite a few of these pairings. I enjoyed The Kind Worth Killing, and I'm now currently reading My Lovely Wife and would agree that they're comparable titles. (I read them on ur rec). I've read Big Little Lies and Her Pretty Face (both on audiobook). I understand the comparison, but while I loved Big Little Lies , I found Her Pretty Face pretty forgettable. I read and enjoyed Middlegame, but I'm one of the few people who really didn't like Dark Matter. I think they have some similarities, but Middlegame is slower, more ambiguous with better characters. Though I agree Middlegame is hard to compare to anything else. It kind of reminded me of the TV show Maniac on Netflix in tone.

I really want to be sold on Middlegame. But the first 3 Wayward Children books didn't do it for me because I didn't feel they were developed enough. I loved to idea they're just too short in my opinion. And now that you're comparing it to Dark Matter which I didnt love. So I guess Middlegame just isn't for me...😭😭
