Love the 'Glow Tape' idea (will steal that) ! L plates every time over the plethora of new Rotating Camera Mounts, I buy one for every camera and it never comes off. Best accessory I bought last year? Feelworld LCD monitor (attach it to any camera hot shoe or clip it onto the tripod leg), it makes composition and checking your shots soooo much easier than any camera LCD or trying to get my eye down to the EVF. Using two systems (Sony and Olympus) I like accessories that are not brand specific - so the Godox flashes with an XPro controller (Sony or Oly) means I can use the same flashes on both systems. I always take a powerbank with me (10,000 Mzh for locally and 23,000Mzh for a full day or longer) - to recharge phones and drone batteries & controller, etc. etc.

A couple of years ago it occurred to me that if I'm taking smaller and lighter gear when I travel and that's good enough for my travel photos, then it should be good enough when I'm home. So, this year I'm selling my full size cameras. My main cameras will be the A7CR and A7CII. I don't mind the single card slot. The screen and viewfinder could be better but they're not bad. And the grip could be larger, but a hand strap solves that problem. I would like to be able to use an L-plate, but it blocks the doors on the left side. Since I can't use an L-plate, I use a PD plate which is small and light. I'll just have to tilt the camera over when using some lenses with the camera vertical. And I use lighter Sony GM primes like the 50mm 1.4 GM and the soon to come 85mm GM II. Lovin the downsizing.
@jeannedarc156611 ай бұрын
I love reading all the comments about people taking ‘smaller’ cameras like the a6700 etc. My first proper camera was the RX100vii which is TINY. My 6700 actually feels huge in comparison and I feel like not taking it travelling as it’s too big.
@PhotoTrekr11 ай бұрын
@@jeannedarc1566 I also have an a6600 which I like to use with the tiny Sony 24mm G and 50mm G lenses. And I have an RX100vii which is my pocket camera.
@kevinharding936110 ай бұрын
You can definitely find an L plate that won't cover the battery doors. I shoot Sony and Olympus (now OMS) and if saving size, weight and money with next to no compromises (and a lot of benefits) then take a look at the OM1 and the superb Olympus or Pana-Leica lenses. Even their f1.2 lenses are smaller and lighter (but of course still let in more light, though compromises DoF, which could be a positive or a negative depending on case use) that said the f1.4, f2.0 or f2.8 are mostly good enough for what I shoot.

Re the glow in the dark tape - I like the idea of being able to see my tripod legs in the dark, but I'm not keen on the uncontrollable light that could get in my (and other's) astrophotos. Maybe battery powered red light strips might be more practical because of the ability to turn them off when not needed.

@DavidWood211 ай бұрын
L brackets are less bulky, but you will reframe the shot slightly when vertical as the sensor centre will move upwards.
@breannagunderman238810 ай бұрын
I agree on L brackets since recomposing is almost the same, though there is a slight vertical shift as noted. Takes up far less space in your bag. On my Canon R6, I decided to use a half rig from Small Rig and am soooooo happy with it! Even L brackets with a notch in the side plate would interfere with my articulating LCD screen, and block most of my side ports. The half rig doesn’t block any of that since it is shifted forward along the side. To enable portrait shooting like an L bracket would, I’ve attached the tripod plate from my 3 Legged Thing since it’s super small (1.5” square). While this does block my mic and headphones port, I never use those and all other port doors can open. Absolutely love it!

What do you use as your last step to backup photos? Once youre done editing off of SSD drives, where do the photos live?
@allisonanderson11 ай бұрын
Right now, large capacity external hard drives that are duplicated multiple times to prevent data loss if a drive fails. I'm debating getting a NAS but not sure if it's exactly what I need. A good long-term storage workflow has been one of the trickiest things for me to figure out. If anyone has recommendations let me know!
@MyFocusVaries11 ай бұрын
I definitely recommend a multiple backup system, with storage in separate locations. A professional music friend had his music files backed up, but stored near his laptop. He had a break-in and his laptop AND external hard drives were stolen. He lost his recently completed project. @@allisonanderson

Gotcha. Right now, my photos live on my memory card and an SSD drive. I need to wipe my memory card, but I'm scared to have my pics live on just 1 SSD and was wondering what your current workflow was!
@PhotoTrekr11 ай бұрын
@@allisonanderson I spent my career working with computers, computer users, and networks. Photography has been a lifelong hobby. So, I've always used some form of backup for my photographs. When I travel, each night I upload that days files to external redundant Samsung SSD drives like you use. The laptop I use for travel is small and light and has a small SSD internal drive. When I return home I copy the photos from the SSD drives to a dedicated internal hard drive in my desktop computer. I'll replace the int hard with an SSD soon. All of those files are also copied onto a Synology NAS with mirrored drives. I feel comfortable with that much redundancy. If I was a professional photographer, I would also have files stored offsite. But, I'm not a big fan of cloud storage. I like having control of my files, not anyone else. Is there some reason you don't use a Labelmaker?

What is your long term data storage strategy with so many SSDs? If you leave them unpowered for years the cells in the SSDs can’t keep their charge leading to data loss. I am really surprised many photographers not knowing this and still collecting an extensive amount of SSDs for „backup“.

I like the post it label idea ! You carry a hand blower to dust off your Sensor???! Here's something....The very last thing I do to Any Electronics, is use anything like dust off air canisters, hand blowers etc. You're sending the problem the wrong way ! There are accessories for vacuum cleaner hoses small. I will vacuum my computer key board, my camera etc. Not Force the dust INTO it, but out of it, Clean front and rear of lenses, before going out. In dusty areas, two cameras, one wide angle one telephoto...never removing either. A Polarizer The day you walk into a museum and see the glass reflection on everything, you'll never walk far with out it on you again!
