This story reminded me of when I sent off 5 or so cards to be autographed when I was a kid. I know I sent one to Barry Bonds, a 1986 Topps Traded RC, which was my only copy of it. I also sent some cards to Wade Boggs and Kirby Puckett, but I can't remember the other players that I sent them to. I just sent them into the team addresses that I found in a baseball almanac. I never saw any of the cards again and I was always upset about it. It wasn't until I heard this story that I realized it was probably just because I didn't include a self-addressed stamp envelope with any of them! It's funny how naive an 11 year old collector can be. If only I would have sent my cards to Brooks Robinson instead!

I love how Brooks didn’t have to send anything because there wasn’t a self address envelope inside, but he decided to take the extra minute to send something back out to a young fan on his own dime and make a informing joke with it.

Yes please continue with this format of video. Being an O's fan growing up I often heard about Brooksie's respect and kindness to others eventually experiencing it firsthand. The shop I was managing promoted a show and Brooks was the Top Attraction. Fortunately it was slow and I got to sit with him and talk sports with him for about 45 minutes. What a gentleman!

You should do a series of this type of video, this was great! One suggestion that would make it more interesting is to try and recall what you paid and then state the current value of each one. Kind of like you did with the Willie Mays.

Yeah, like what were the financials and strategy on the Robinson deal? Did you cleverly figure him for the kind-hearted sucker he turned out to be, thereby saving yourself a cool 25 cents or so on an extra stamp and envelope, and gaining a valuable handwritten note in the process? What a steal!

Been waiting for this! Just show us your Top 100 over time :) By the way, This channel here is for my coins and bullion but my first love and still is, I have a huge collection, Therefore I am making a new youtube channel today all about cards/trading cards/sports memorabilia. I love how you LOVE the "first days of baseball-pre ww1. Just amazing stuff, I am constantly reading about players from 1880-1945ish I have been doing that forever. Thats why I miss upper deck and sets like legends, SP legendary cuts, New York set they made, Fleer GOTG. Etc. The panini stuff is cool but I LOVE the logos especially when it comes to vintage stuff. Anyway I am going to start off with just random stuff, cards, unopened wax, some bangers but I do not want to show off all my great stuff first, but I am thinking of themes, maybe a different team each day. Like ive told you my 1969-73 collection is in the 10,000s of cards, many many have 5, 6 of each card so when your in the states LMK, I do not have time to move ALL the 800 count boxes of semi/minor/commons. Thanks so much Chris, as always another banger, Keepem coming brother! Have a great day!.. PS, I use to write players, actors, etc, from stararchive. It was so much fun, whats sad is my binders got let at a "friends" back in my senior year, he moved away and vanished, I STILL look for that guy lol, hoping just maybe he will still have mine, man I have around 100 or so sigs some crazy famous actors and some good players, alot were personalized so would be tough sales, obviously no COAs but that was near 15 years ago now, wow how times fly!

Awesome stuff. Love the letter you got back and the run over by a truck McGwire. So cool that you still have that card from your first pack. Love the Ripken Donruss Elite. # to 5000 but such a game changer card when you think of the significance of what Donruss started with these Elite inserts. I always see comments about how these cards are not that rare since they are numbered to 5000 or 10,000 for the other elite inserts but try to find one in good shape without chipping on the edges. Need to remember who was pulling 90% of these 30 years ago. Also when you look at a certain player in ultra modern with a serial numbered card (not auto or patch) and you add all of the parallels, hobby/retail special parallels, color and picture variations and across multiple releases in a year.... I will keep buying my Donruss Elite and Select Mirror cards all day long! Thanks for sharing this Chris!

The amazing part of Barry Sanders is that there are dozens if not hundreds of clips where he did the exact same thing to defenders. I grew up watching him and still can’t put into words just how unique of a player he was. There simply has never been another running back do what he did. One of a kind for sure !

Awesome stuff! Watching Barry Sanders growing up cemented me as a lifelong Detroit Lions fan, no matter how many losing seasons I have to endure. Love that card. I have a similar childhood story to your Brooks Robinson one. After reading Hank Aaron’s autobiography in third grade, I wrote a letter to the Atlanta Braves telling them about how much I enjoyed learning about him. Hank Aaron responded and sent me a greeting card signed “Keep swingin’ for the fences.” - Hank Aaron. Still the coolest thing in my collection

I always wanted to have a 1989 Griffey when I was a kid but never had the money for it. I think we have to be around same age cause we have similar childhoods. I'm 45 & absolutely love your videos. I got back into cards again in 2020 & the first card I bought was a 1989 Griffey PSA 8 for $60 & a raw 1984 Dan Marino RC for $25 (hes my fav player all time). My friend had the Fleer Canseco that he cherished back in the day & that 1988 donruss Canseco brought back alot of memories. I remember riding our bikes 1 hour distance to the card shop where he traded all his collection for that Canseco. Thanks so much for all your videos & what u do to keep the hobby side alive. Love the video and stories behind the cards. My two main guys are Ripken and Gwynn, so I love that you have Ripken stuff and stories. I have a memory of sending cards for autos in the 80's. Nobody returned mine, except I got something from Ripken. It was obviously an assistant or service, but he sent a little card that said, sorry, he gets too many requests to sign through the mail and it included a Ripken post card. Much larger than my envelope, so the cost of the item and postage was all on Cal's dime. I was most impressed that he cared enough to send a sorry note with a little something to soften not getting his auto. True class.

Cal Ripken was my favorite player as a kid too, and I used to buy packs of 1983 Topps trying to get his card. A friend of mine ended up pulling it from a pack, and I was able to get it from him in trade. It's really beat up but I still have it after all of these years, and it's my favorite card that I own.

These stories take me back to my childhood. I couldn’t afford some of the cards that a couple of the cool kids had, but I had a ton of cards. My parents bought me a wax box of 91 Donruss one time, and I’d open a pack every few days. I was with a friend at the mall, and his mom bought us a pack of 1990 Score (Olerud rookie was cool then), and I told him I’d give him a pack of Donruss in trade. I brought one to school, and I’ll be damned if he didn’t pull a Barry Bonds Donruss Elite from it, right there in class. I was devastated. I tried to trade him for it until he moved away in jr high, but never could get it back. When I got back into the hobby a few years ago, it’s the first card I bought, along with that Barry Sanders Score rookie.

As usual, very nice presentation of our hobby. My favorite was the short video of Barry Sanders and your "play-by-play". I really miss watching him run and understand why he was one of your favorites. I also agree that the Brooks Robinson note shows the true character of the man who dominated the hot corner for over 20 years.

Chris!! Awesome video and I remember asking you about doing something like this. My Dad and I were watching the Sanders Game you showed where he Ridicously Embarrassed the Cowboys Defense... I like Everything you showed and I too own Multiple Ripken Elite Cards. He and Gwynn were my favorite players growing up. You're Two years younger than I am so we got to watch some Incredible Players growing up!! Do MORE of these Please!

Love that you didnt just pick the most expensive cards but what meant the most as well. I have a 1964 Hank Aaron card and its probably a PSA 3 or 4 and its was found in my Nana's basement along with 3 or 4 1952 commons. Those are some of my favorite due to the years and the history not the value

Thanks for sharing!! Love the history behind your collection. My favorite is the Bird Magic rookie. I remember wanting to get that card signed many years ago. I bought the card and got Bird and Magic to sign. My friend said he was going to see Dr J, so I gave him my card. He got it signed at a golf tournament. But when he got back to his car it was missing. He went back and found it laying on the floor in the clubhouse. Boy was I lucky that no one saw it laying there...

Anyone who watched football during Barry Sanders career know he’s one of the most talented running backs of all time.He would do things that make your jaw drop. It was a sad day when he decided to cut his career short and retire. Like Jean Beliveau in hockey, not only was Brooks Robinson one of ghe best defensive 3rd baseman of all time, he was also a stand up classy guy who would always take time to sign autographs for the kids.

Loved the video. You reminded me of when I was a kid. I sent a bunch of cards to the Toronto Blue Jays asking for autographs. I sent them to the stadium and included a note. They sent a package back to me with all my cards. They didn't get autographed but they did include a Toronto Blue Jays wallet. I thought was pretty cool of them. I had that wallet for many years.

Another great video Chris! Are you gonna get a fancy logo like all the other big card youtubers? I think it would help with your brand (and merch) 😁

Thank you Chris for by far and away the best card channel on KZbin. So simple, honest and funny. As a total amateur UK based panini soccer sticker collector I know nothing about baseball but your content is both informative and fascinating. You bring to life what most collectors love, the find and owning a piece of history. Love seeing your PC and the stories bring it to life. Also love your approach with unusual, old, strange cards and getting those graded. Keep up the cracking work.
