Number 11. I use a lanyard so I won’t drop my RC and phone. Checking my mates roof. He wanted to see the screen. Turned it towards him, lanyard touched the control stick, drone flew into a wall. Freaky accident but one to be aware of if you use a lanyard for ‘safety’. Great video by the way. Thanks.

Another drone channel mentioned a good tip for approaching the landing zone: do it so the butt end is facing you, then you don't have to mirror the controls in your head
@jhalvico3 жыл бұрын
Well, it depends. After few months flying I feel more comfortable landing the drone facing the front towards me. Of course, first you need to trainee yourself controlling in mirroring mode, but at the end you will have more skills to fly in both ways.

Thank you Darren, can I ask you a rather simple and silly question on the same safety topic: in your experience (or to your knowledge of watching other videos and talking to people perhaps) - how likely is something like DJI Mini 2 to just fail in flight? I.e. something going wrong with the engine or propellers etc, and that being the reason for a crash/fall? Because it seems to me like 99% of every other scenarios are due to operator error - am I getting the right message here mate?

Thanks for this. I am a very new pilot, but one thing that I do to avoid crashes flying in reverse is to mostly fly in reverse a path that I have just flown forward if that makes sense. For example I did some footage flying quite close to an aqueduct here in Italy but after flying forward which “set the path“, I figured I could fly in reverse and it should return on the same path that it came forward with. So far so good. And thanks so much for all your videos. They are extremely helpful!

According to Holy Stone (I have the HS175D model) if the battery runs dangerously low the drone will automatically return to its last recorded take off position. If the drone loses transmitter signal for more than 6 seconds, it will go into "failsafe" mode and again return. The pilot cannot exit return home by long pressing the return home button in both circumstances, but it does stress two things, 1 in all cases the GPS signal has to be strong. 2, the drone will fly into any object in its path. I DO NOT INTEND to put any of this to the test! I am a very new operator I got my done as a Christmas present (2022) so all the info you give in this video is extremely helpful to me. When landing manually I always turn my mini 2 around and reverse park, 😂😂. And yes, I’m a new pilot at this time. As a light aircraft pilot I flew mainly joystick controlled aircraft. The habit of pulling the stick back to raise the nose of the aircraft was the reason for my first drone crash (on first flight),😂😂. It was at point I started to think of that stick as a throttle and start watching some vids made by experienced operators, 😂😂. Watched a few of your vids and enjoy them. O M G. I've only been flying a few months. I sent up my mini 2 to about 190ft yesterday the wind on the ground wasn't that bad but the image on my screen started suddenly moving very fast too the left and moving the stick did nothing to change it. so i look up and sure enough the drone is being carried away at a fast rate. I try lowering my altitude at same time as trying to move towards my direction to no avail. I'm starting to panic a bit but then realize I'm still in "c"mode so I switch to sport and am able to over come the wind and return to my location. All this occurred in under a min but it seemed like it lasted a lifetime watching that drone move opposite of the direction I was intending.. if it had been one of my first flights I'm sure I would have lost it, never to have been found. Just wanted to share my lesson that the wind on the ground does not always match the wind higher up.

something that can give you good indication of wind wherever the drone is at ... is using the drone attitude graph in DJI fly. I had no idea what that handy lil graph was showing me till I watched a vid on it ... now I have it set showing that instead of the map thats usually there. Granted, I realize it wont help w/ countering sudden wind gusts but... still I think its pretty cool knowing how hard drone is working at countering any wind when just trying to hover in place.

I love your channel it’s great it’s giving me all the confidence I’ve needed to plan ahead and take time to learn how to fly as well as learn all the functions of the app whether it be calibration or RTH settings/camera settings etc. etc. I’ve only been flying drones for two months although I’m experienced in the RC cars so I’m familiar with going away from yourself as the coming towards yourself trying to decipher left and right right to left depending on whether you’re coming or going but with the drone it sure is tricky. I’m really loving this new hobby I actually went out to Long Beach I live in CaliforniaAnd took some video and use the app for the first time to edit and add music and it came out pretty darn cool a lot of my motions were choppy so I just trimmed and clipped and used the best content.I’m trying to get used to flying straight without making too many jerky left or right movements and I’m still nervous to fly too far away from my self but I will get there. Thanks Darren for this. I was more specifically interested with the ''flyaway'' angle in your title but you have not covered this (rather than crashes and even though flyaway is a reality that will also lead to a crash). After my 5th or 6th flight with my first drone - the mini 3 pro - I just made an auto take off and without doing anything more, the drone just flew forward and fast. A nightmare as I was... on 21st floor of a building!.... I could see it going far above the streets, no way to control it for about a minute or more (you're loosing time notion in such situations...) When I finally took back control, it came back close to the balcony, I was about to land it and... it banged into the wall of the building (loosing control again) and that was, as you say, ''game over'': it felt the 21 floors and ended on its back, half of the wings broken and no way to make it fly again. I think this topic is unknown to most new pilots like myself, it was a big (bad) nightmare, I scrapped a $1000 drone. Fortunately this happened while Amazon Prime could still allow me for a return, so I now have a new one, but I'm kind of very nervous about it. I'm learned about not only relying on the ''safe fly note'' the screen tell me, but to really ensure you get at least 10 satellites locked or more. This reality does not seem to be even touched by DJI and where I am, unfortunately dji care is not available.

Thanks again for publishing these video, they're a great help especially for beginners as it brings much awareness to various unforseen scenarios pilots can encounter. Since my Mini 2 got blown into a nearby hedge after my first couple of test flights I've been really apprehensive in taking it out again (current UK weather's not helped mind although this weekend's been awesome so far hasn't it?). Have you ever experienced any issues yourself with your Mini 2 being side swiped when fully holding down to land from around 4-5 feet high? Must admit I was lingering a bit longer than usual (around 10 seconds) as trying to find a suitable patch of grass but just as soon as I found one it was too late and off on its own.

@@DMProductions Since the incident I've replayed it quite a few times in my head and initially thought I must've just got confused and held down the wrong stick but am mostly certain I hadn't. Pretty sure that prior I was under the impression that although the Mini 2 is insanely light I'd read that it only seems to be badly wind affected when quite high up in the air but yeah, definitely the more flight experience the better. Won't even consider flying now without checking the UAV Forecast app (very handy advice taken from another of your helpful vids).

A couple of more comments about flying under bridges. Be careful that there is nothing hanging from the bridge. Often there are wires, ropes or monofilament fishing line hanging from the bridge. Also tricky to make sure that you have the camera adjusted properly so that you are actually at the right level if you are out of visual range. Regarding landing... I always have the drone facing away from me and in Cine mode so that I don't make a mistake on the controls and crash it when I'm trying to land. Just land it slowly and carefully like a pilot does with his aircraft.
@jelias9993 жыл бұрын
If i come into land (usually on my hand) I always turn around and fly backwards into my hand simply because of it being opposite if it's facing towards me lol. I'm fine looking at it on the camera but if I'm looking directly at it I forget almost every time.

FYI - the Pause/RTH button is a HARD brake, faster than reverse stick.

I crashed my drone on Friday. I'm a hard landscaper and was taking some videos a pic of patio we just finished . and I was tired and yep crashed into the top of the house. came down hard on new patio. but thank God it was fine 🙂....it was my fault because I was to tired tbh ....so don't fly tired 😴....thank you for the video 📹.

Exactly mistakes and distractions happen , flying the mini is tough it’s on you . You have no position sensors to help you

I was recently flying my mini 2 near Canary Wharf over the river Thames about 8.30 pm, altitude was only allowed 60 meters which was high enough as it was about 3mile from city airport. I had about 10 minutes flight time left so I pushed the return to home, nothing it got further away and and getting warning notifications of over the allowed height. As you can imagine I was shitting bricks only had 2 minutes left on the battery and still wouldn’t return to home. It eventually landed in Surrey docks garden centre right next to the river with critical battery. Had to go back next day and collect it. It lives another day

Wow that’s scary, would rth on the controller not work either ? That’s bad you should email DJI as that’s a safety issue. But before delete the app reinstall and do a test rth not far away

@@DMProductions I pushed the return to home on controller and phone, nothing happened. When it landed I was about 800 meters away from the home point thank god for find my drone

I bet there are more crashes with the FPV Drone because of how tempting it is to fly off the cuff.

If I ever crash my mini 2, I will spring for the mini 3 pro. That one has everything I want to include obstacle avoidance.

It's a pity that dji doesn't offer a headless mode option in the app. That could help the left-right problem when the drone is flying towards the operator

Tried flying my mini 2 indoor and it hovered for a bit and then it went out of control and crashed even though I wasn’t touching anything. I though they were supposed to just hover when not bothering the controls
