flying backwards doesn't affect me much as long i can see what's in front and the drone moving away from me if there's something to hit or crash, I don't think this is an issue because if you fly your drone you fly as a pilot so you're a total idiot if you know there's an obstacle in front of you where the drone will hit but you still fly backwards? lols

RTH update fun. I was chatting to a guy who did the round the world yacht race. The boats are doing 30/40 knots a cross the Atlantic. The official race videographer had the drone up taking some awesome footage when his controller pings up a return to home warning. The drone disappears over the horizon back to where it was launched 25 minutes (and about 13 miles) away, to land itself somewhere in the ocean.

Many thanks for your superb video! I have been flying "toy" drones for a couple of years, upgraded to an MX911, and awaiting delivery of an FPV system. I did take the U.S.A. recreational testing and received my Pilot certification. I have the certificates in all of my drone bags, travel boxes, and also in my car glovebox. (Be aware: if you post/share videos on KZbin, Facebook, etc. you are now a PROFESSIONAL pilot and you need to take the FAA 107(?) exam and be certified, licensed, and your drones need to be marked with your FAA license number). What folks need to know, at least in the U.S.A., is that F.A.A. regulated airspace is 12" off the ground! I never knew that! Also, pilots need to have an app on their cell to check for "safe flying/not restricted" air space. DO NOT fly over people. Do not fly over beaches. ALWAYS have a spotter. Be careful in campgrounds...Do not fly a drone without prop guards amongst people (will save your props anyway!). Always trim/spin/check controls...calibrate your drone. Don't fly in windy weather unless your machine is robust! Know the Front and Rear lights on your drone... Practice, Practice, Practice... learn how to hover (waist level), spin in a corner, move to the right, spin in the corner, and continue behind you. DON'T SHOW OFF! You will most likely WRECK 2 or 3 drones before "you get it"....start with inexpensive ones first. Have a Landing pad. Know how to clean and lubricate your UAV. Have glues, epoxies, etc. in your repair kit. Extra batteries, External power block for "charging in the field"...SAFE chargers! So much more! I am excited to be a part of this very rewarding hobby, BUT YOU GOTTA LEARN THE RULES... Thank you Mattheww Brennan!

Great advice. I would like to add that if you need to change your props on the Mini2 then to ensure the screws do not loosen, is to add a tiny drop of loctite/threadlock to each thread.

This video is really helpful, as a new pilot I was flying my DJI Mavic Mini Pro 3, and I lost site of it, and it wasn't a good feeling, as I panicked and hit RTH, then I finally could see it. Even with the map, I was just freaked out about not seeing it. So great advice and I need to really follow that one. LOL! Thanks for this.

I recently flew too far away and lost signal. Thankfully my drone went straight into RTH mode, and after 10-15 seconds I started getting the imagery back on my phone whilst it was returning, then once I knew where I was I turned RTH off and landed it back where I was manually. I was a bit scared there for a moment! Modern drones are amazing but, still be cautious, particularly if you're beginning!

When it comes to battery stress testing, make sure you're in a safe location. I was in the smokey mountains with this beautiful lake and sent my drone out 2 miles. Got beautiful footage, then I flew back at the recommended timing the drone gave me, only I noticed the battery percentage was going down fast. Very fast. Sure enough I was still another quarter mile away from RTH, and there were only woods. Thankfully I spotted a road in the thick woods and as it was doing a forced landing, I could still direct it forward, so I just barely made it to the road, and had it hover there until we got in the car and went to recover it on GPS. Thank god no cars came up that way, because it would have been crushed easily.

Another tip is when flying at the beach, the drone can get attacked by Seagulls. Some people try manoeuvring left and right trying to dodge them but the answer is to go straight up high then fly away as fast as you can. Seagulls are unable to fly vertical and can only gain height slowly. Seagulls can and will knock your drone out of the sky.

Regarding strength and crashes, FOR ALL DRONES. We need weaker springs in the legs. This will mean in the impact of a crash; the springs flex absorbing the initial impact instead of putting all the impact through the legs. Currently, the springs are stronger than the plastic legs, which means that the legs break before the spring moves. It would also be great if, in an accident, the drone could fly on three motors.

Great video, thanks Matthew! I would like to contribute a little on the point of losing propellers - maybe you can include this in your next videos - I'm sure many people will thank you for that. I have a Mini 2 and it happened to me this summer that the drone suddenly went down. It turned out one of the propeller blades was gone. Apparently it was already damaged a little - I had some crashes a few months ago (not recently). Or maybe the screw was not tight enough - the blade is gone with (!) the screw. The blades were kind of scratched, but I thought there were OK. I thought wrong :) Luckily, it happened just like 50m away from me and the drone was not high so I just replace the blades and could fly further, but I was filming over the sea in those days a lot. So if it happened over the sea I would have to buy a new drone and (what's even worse) I wouldn't know the reason why it fell down. So, my conclusion here: take care of the propeller blades, replace them regularly and (at least I'll do so) immediately after a crash or if the blade has visible damages, even light ones.

This was an amazing video full of insight, thank you. Buying a drone for the first time this week. Although I knew about going into a wide open space and spending a good hour learning the drone, other factors like wind speed up high and rth updates was invaluable to me. Thank you for that. It will be a 249 gram drone so will need obvious registration, but need to learn the laws of flying the drone as well. Again thank you.

The amount of times my freestyle quad would be mid punch going 50mph and a prop would break apart was never fun. Thankfully never had the same issues with any DJI drone yet.

Regarding screwed-in propellers, would it be alright to use something like Loctite threadlockers? This newbie learned a lesson a few days ago. Flying my new DJI Mini 3 Pro (on my 2nd day of getting it), I was flying over a pond behind my house at dusk. As I brought it closer to the bank, it made contact with some leafy trees, hit the leaves, then plummeted into the water, right next to the bank. Causal factor: obstacle avoidance was pretty much useless because of low light conditions. Fortunately, I purchased the DJI Care Refresh product protection and my replacement Mini 3 will be arriving today! Well worth getting!! 😅

Fantastic tips thank you for sharing. Very helpful. I will be purchasing a DJI mini 2 shortly and these tips have been excellent. Can i just ask, do i have to register it as i was told it needs to have a sticker on it. Thank very much.

LOTS of great tips that I know I would of messed up on otherwise! Oof, I am actually even more nervous lol! Will definitely update the drone, just don't know when weather will be better so I can turn it on for that new firmware. 😓

Hey Andy why do you need to wait for a better weather? can you not just update your drone inside your house no matter the weather outside?

Great content, so many handy tips. Only thing I'd say is dont just let go of the sticks. Be like driving a car and just letting go of the wheel. No longer in control.
