The monogram behind the Virgin Mary embroidery is the standard Ave Maria symbol. The Virgin Mary you have on the front is "Our Lady of Grace" "Notre Dame de Grâce". It was first depicted in 1440 and has had many other versions since. The one you have here is a depiction of the later versions of her - possibly 1920-30's - where it was said that her robe scintillated with jewels of gold. She wears a "crown halo" of golden stars - there are 12 - which ties her to her son's 12 disciples. As Jesus said, when hanging on the cross: "Mother, here is your son" as he identified James, one of his brothers as being the one to look after her as she was now a widow. Mary is at times seen crushing a foot on the neck of a snake. This stands for the belief that she and her son Jesus, crush the enemy's attempt to rule the earth when we pray to them. The monogram looks exactly like the Marie Antoinette monogram! So glad you could save it. I love the idea of meaningful art in a home - your grandmothers needle point is charming. Having art on the back of the bathroom door is a fun idea and I bet it helps when people come out of there to have a conversation about something other than sitting on the throne LOL 🤣 Also how fun to find the little plate with your chateau on it. Years ago I saw a tapestry of a Boucher painting on eBay that I wanted to buy then forgot to bid on it and lost it. Two days later when walking the dogs I found the exact same tapestry sitting by a dustbin in the street with almost the same gold frame ! ( Paris ) a month later I saw a frame wedged between two other bins and the glass was all white with plaster. I took it home, cleaned it and it is a beautiful Madonna, an old one. I found a huge one the other day at Emmaus but we couldn't get it onto the car until my other friend said that she would wedge herself behind it so I could take it home ! The things we do !

The saddest thing about America is we have little access to ornate gold frames. No style here. It's cheap and fast production. I'm glad for my friends that have saved ornate furniture, sculpture, porcelain, crystal and paintings from the junk pile. People here don't seem to understand how long it takes to create these artfull items. Artisans need to be appreciated and supported again.

Boursin is a family favourite, it makes appearances on our chacouterie boards and by special request at Christmas!😏

When we sold half of our USA food storage and food distribution business to Societe de Caves who also owned Roquefort and Perrier water, we got to meet many of the owners of the great cheese makers of France - since we distributed them all over the USA . Boursin was and is a fine French Cheese. Another perfect great French cheese for picnics is the famous Bonne Bel Cheeses in their red wax protection. At the time Besnier ( now Lactalls ) was the largest cheese manufacturer in France but they did not own the King of French Cheeses - Roquefort! When they bought SdC they did not want half of a food distribution company or Perrier. So half of our distribution company was sold to the Irish Dairy Board and Perrier was sold to Nestles who is the largest water company in the world. Allouette is a Boursin knock off. Even though the USA is the largest cheese maker in the world, French cheeses and some Italian ones, remain the very best in the world - by far!

What a wonderful history you have, Deane. It’s funny you mention the Besniers as they used to be our neighbours in the Mayenne region of France and our daughters went to the same school. The cheese industry is very interesting here in France…. So many small farmers with their exclusive regional cheeses and then also the big companies, and yet it seems to work. As an American, I must agree with you about the cheese quality in different countries. I think it’s to do with regulations and pasteurisation laws. Cheesemakers are a law unto themselves here in France! 🥰🏰💖

I have a book about her life in one.of my bookcases. And she certainly was a brave. And wise very, very young woman/girl with so much faith, and.led by the most powerful. Saints. Most would never have taken so much on if they did not.have a strong faith, and total belief in what she must do for her country. It was her calling from birth!

Oh Vivienne, I do remember your father giving you the hand stitched artwork. They are lovely. I have missed ‘cheese of the week’ so much. I also love Boursin cheeses. My favorite flavor is garlic & herbs. It appears the picnic was most enjoyable. Hugs, Doc Minneapolis, Minnesota
