Faxanadu and and Crystalis are two of my all-time favorite games, hard to believe they're so cheap now. The semi-scifi spin they put in their fantasy settings really created some of the most captivating and interesting game worlds I've ever explored. Also they both have kickass soundtracks.

A lot of these games had great music, hell the music was the best thing Dungeon Magic had going for it.
@nanoglitch66934 жыл бұрын
@@DariaPlaysRPGs They really did. Zelda 2 had some of the most iconic tunes in the whole franchise (imo). I've often wondered if the more limited means of creating music on the classic consoles helped focus the creativity of the composers back then. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of great music in modern games but they just don't get stuck in my brain like the tunes from the nes/snes era.

Excellent video with lots of interesting choices! Crystalis is definitely my pick for best rpg on the NES. It is the game that got me into the genre in the first place. Faxanadu is oddly nostalgic for me because it was the game my cousin and his friend told me to go play because I wanted to play King's Bounty with them on the Genesis and they didn't want me bugging them. Faxanadu always looked good but I couldn't hack it as a kid.

I remember playing Dragon Warrior right after Final Fantasy 1-3, and while it was definitely clunkier and less polished in just about every way, there were two things that I ended up enjoying more than I expected to: the utility spells and the dungeons. Having spells that are useful outside of combat, as well as dungeons that require a light source and a piece of graph paper did make it a bit more interesting and immersive compared to most of the JRPGs I was used to at the time. The fact that treasure chests in dungeons would respawn, which was likely an oversight or programming error, also made for some variation to the formula when I realized I could be grinding dungeons instead of just mobs when I needed money. I really haven't played a whole lot of JRPGs outside of the classics, but in the ones I've played the dungeons usually feel like little more than corridors with the occasional branching path and treasure chest, so I was pleasantly surprised to learn that they had something more going for them.

Saw someone with a msg saying “i will never own suikoden 2”, that message makes me sad because I owned 1 and 2, up until a couple years ago, I was really bad off, into drugs and had no money and had heard that they sell for a lot. I was so desperate for cash quickly that I sold suikoden 1 and 2 for 80$ since it was the quickest sale I could make (sold it in like 2 hours) 😭. I’ve been Sober now for almost 4 years, and that always makes me sad. But honestly, I don’t mind all that much, I enjoyed them when I was young, and if I wanted to play again I could always play the Roms, and the most important reason why I’m not too torn up over it, is the guy I talked to sounded like a real genuine fan and I was glad to give it to him. Tbh I’m more upset that I can’t play ff7 remake because I have an Xbox one and a switch. And not a stupid ps4 which is like 400$ or something despite a new console coming out relatively soon

Great vid! Faxanadu is excellent, had it as a kid and tons of nostalgia here. Replayed it recently and it's still great. The first Dragon Warrior I find very charming. A hyper-compact rpg and the challenge and sense of exploration is still interesting today I think, despite some mechanics being clunky as you said. I don't mind having just one character, it actually means less stuff to worry about. I still play that one once every year. That sword and serpents game looks like a very competent dungeon crawler! gonna have to try it. Oh and I really need to play Willow already... Amazing vid Daria! Ultima Exodus is one I played through yesterday. It's remarkably short if you have maps and know what to do. But back in the day, it would take forever just to figure out what the hell to do with those cryptic vague hints, and there was no internet to look it up on. Frustrated children could spend weeks just wandering, hoping to stumble upon the solution, not counting the repeated dungeon deaths from unexpected traps.

Great list and video. Idk if it was said somewhere else (I did scroll through a bit and look so I wouldn't say what has already been said) but Faxanadu is not the only Xanadu game to come west. Tokyo Xanadu eX for the PS Vita and the PS4 port Tokyo Xanadu eX+ were both brought west by Aksys games. This game was developed by Falcom themselves and is really good for what is obviously a budget title. Think recent Ys Combat with Persona light social stats and a Trails of Cold Steel story structure. It's only subbed and not dubbed in English but is quite a hidden gem. Cheers. :)

3 subtle changes that would have made Zelda 2 a bearable game: 1) Link’s sword ranges an 1/8th of a tile further. 2) Upthrust and downthrust are basic attacks. 3) You can gain a STOPWATCH spell that freezes overworld enemies for brief periods.
