Here's a tip about Paladin's Quest: Keep your Elemental Skills leveled up! Every time you use a magic spell, that element's bar fills in bit-by-bit in your Character's "Magic" screen in the Stat Menu. If you, for example, level Chezni's Fire to full (do this near a town so you can rest at the Inn and refill your bottles), you will absolutely obliterate anything remotely challenging. Do this every time you get a new element and nothing will stand in your way. Yes, the game doesn't explain this very well, but you *are* a spritualist trying to become the best caster in the world, afterall. Practice makes perfect. And don't sell your old bottles when you get a new bottle -- you can use the old bottles sitting in your inventory to heal with too. If you follow these tips, by the time you find the dragon for the first time, you're getting AoE spells capable of hitting entire groups. Yes, it saps your HP, but when you wipe out a whole screen-full of enemies for 20-30HP for a cast of Heat or some-such, and get a ridiculous amount of XP in return for it... it's better than trying to fight them with weapons. Once you get enough levels, you will begin to simply roflstomp everything in your way and your levels should stay high. At least until the last boss. Let's hope you didn't accidentally miss Heart Magic for the girl......
@DariaPlaysRPGs7 жыл бұрын
Wow. I kind of want to try the game again with this strategy. Thanks!
@Dhalin7 жыл бұрын
I'm glad it could potentially help! Oh, and to clarify... the bit about the bottles... you can't use inventory bottles in battle. So, use the bottles sitting in your inventory to heal between battles and save the equipped ones for battle. I just read over that again and realized that I didn't specify that part, hehe. But yeah, that's not to say that there aren't a couple problem fights in the game, but most of the stuff should be far easier if you do what I suggested. EDIT: Oh yes.... the girl's crown when you get it, early in the game. Use it in battle to heal the girl for 800HP (IIRC?) for free. You can use it as many times as you wish. In fact, many equippable items that are not weapons have a special use. Just experiment with them, try them all at least once (or read an FAQ on Gamefaqs). Some of them are ludicrously OP, like that crown.
@DariaPlaysRPGs7 жыл бұрын
I had figured out the bottle thing already. But the magic sounds like a literal game changer.
@Dhalin7 жыл бұрын
It is! I know it is really really odd to make a game that is based around a magic user, and call it "Paladin's Quest", because most people think of Paladins as being knights, IE, weapon-users. But eh, your two main characters are mainly mages with the ability to use an assortment of weapons. I find though that in my playthroughs, I'm using at least 80% magic rather than weapon attacks. I think that's where the confusion in many people comes up, they go at it from a traditional RPG angle where you save magic, and the HP cost probably does not help... but yet as you get up in levels and your magic starts decimating entire groups of enemies, it quickly gets to where you lose less HP by spending it on spells rather than taking hits from enemies. I can record a bit of footage if you wanna see any of it in action, I think I have a mid-game save somewheres.
@Dhalin7 жыл бұрын
Sadly, I don't have a mid-game save... I have two saves that are near the end of the game. One of them is Lv46 and the hero needs ~6,000xp per level. There are fights in the overworld that give 1,600xp that you can just burst down with AoE magic and they give way more gold than you'd ever spend on bottles (by then you have Gigabl that heals all group members to full). And for some weird reason, I got a Lv61 save that's not even at the end of the game, lol. I have no idea what drove me to level up to flippin' 61 in this save, but yeeesh lol. Same area, and at 61, looks like about 20k for a levelup. So the level grinding isn't Too bad.

Earthbound definitely is 'weird' by the criteria you've seemingly laid out here, i.e. Secret of the Stars is really only on here because of its unusual atmosphere and story elements while Earthbound is about a thousand times weirder in the same ways, while they both boil down gameplay-wise to be Dragon Quest clones. There's also some others I was surprised not to see here, like Robotrek and Secret of Evermore. Still though, good choices for the theme otherwise & Paladin's Quest really left me feeling weird as a kid in particular. Plus, there wasn't a single actual paladin anywhere in the game that I recall...

Do you also know that he game has a fanremaster that fixes its engrish translation, the balancing in the latter end, the prices for the items, the speed for dungeons and towns and adds the details the game usually doesnt tell you about for items and spells? It's called the Seal of Rimsala and it makes the game WAAAAY more enjoyable that way then whatever beta-released version of the game the world got. Heck, there have been encoutner reducing spells and items foudn in the source code for it with some of them even being used in the japanese version BOT NOT THE US ONE! D:

I have actually beaten Paladin's Quest. Thought the graphics were unique and charming. I actually would like to play it again.
@AnnieGalla6 жыл бұрын
I actually quite enjoyed both Secret of the Stars and Paladin's Quest. The former had some of the most involved battle mechanics on the system and had the best use of combination attacks I have seen. IE they are kind of like Phantasy Star IV but you don't need to get the character order just right and are actually both useful and necessary in regards to taking down bosses at a remotely decent rate without grinding and it allows one to more easily dispose of random enemies. Also the bad writing was because the game had an infamously poor localization on the same level as Breath of Fire 2's, and i really would like to see the original script some day. As for Paladin's Quest, I have to disagree about the menu interface considering that getting into a certain pattern of selection is exactly what I did throughout the game. It looks like someone else has spoken about the battle mechanics so I will hold off on them. Regardless, the fact that one even knows these games exist is pretty cool and some of your other stuff looks interesting, so i subscribed.

I used to love Secret of the Stars and Paladin's Quest when I found them on the SNES. I would rent them at the video store a lot when I got the chance. The people wondered why I would ask for certain copies of the cartridges when I would rent the games again because it's the same game. I said it's because they may still have my save on them. They never understood what I was talking about. Some times the save was there and some times it wasn't but I still liked the games. I loved playing RPGs on the SNES but I could never really buy any was my big problem so I had to rent them. I only got games like Mario and Donkey Kong Country for my own except for Earthbound which I got with the SNES from a friend. Anyways I lost my train of thought so I'll end the comment here.

Nice video, but I have to admit I absolutely love LENNUS a.k.a. Paladin's Quest. Okay, it was one of my first RPGs but it let me fall in love with the genre and even after replaying the game twice I still find much to like in it. The writing might be stiff and clumsy but the story is quite good and offers some interesting twists. And the graphics look rather strange but on the other hand the design is somewhat inspired, and every town and city offers a different style of architecture, something rarely found in 16bit RPGs. But what I love most about the game is the fantastic soundtrack by Kohei Tanaka. It makes hours of grinding bearable and even enjoyable, especially since the combat system is quite original and I had a lot of fun with it.

Daria, a protip from someone who has replayed that game at least 10x: use game genie codes. Trust me. You'll want the Wind Sword, and Chezni to have increased stats at the start. Sadly the codes for Medea are not as great, but use them as well. The rest of the equipment codes don't matter nearly as much. It's still a pretty brutal game however, but it does make things a little more interesting if he has more HP at the start, given it's one of the least well balanced games due to the magic mechanic being tied to HP. However, a few tips for gameplay: Level spells whenever you can. It's actually kind of fun getting used to what spells do what. The uniqueness of the spell system itself lends to a bit of fun, and more so if you can cast more than 5 before requiring belt usage. The main reason for the selection process in battle is that a lot of equipment does something, and you can use boots to attack just as you can use weapons. It's a cool feature I didn't appreciate until much later, as I had a similar take to your own, and sadly you need a FAQ, or the item chart to know what equipment does do something useful. The writing, I would agree is simple, but the nature of the story, reading between the lines, and drawing upon what is being told, it's quite fascinating. You ARE your own worst enemy in a sense. I mean how many games start you off with you being the perpetrator of all things evil...even if you were manipulated into doing so? Then cleaning up the mess, and in doing so uncovering that this was almost predestined, patterned, and cyclical, but different, as unlike the heroes of old, you are able to fully defeat the very machine that can both save and destroy the world at the same time.

@geovaughan82612 жыл бұрын
I think the issue you’re having with the menu system is that your equipment is often meant to be used for the effects they have in combat, much like the original FF. Because you don’t have access to your bag mid combat, you only get to use what you’re equipped with. Understanding how items can be used is key to the game. Just as an example, Midia comes equipped with Sophie’s Crown, which heals her HP fully when used in combat, saving you a LOT of medicine. Most later game equipment has very potent effects, so understanding what they do really helps ease the games difficulty. Also, level your spirits. This is the one grindy part of the game I agree with you on. If you level them up your spells become quite potent and well worth the cost in HP. Being able to wreck an enemy group before they slam your whole party saves you way more than the initial spell cost.

as far as i can tell you never quite understood the battle system in paladins quests. I say this because ie never saw you use magic in the video. using magic though it uses HP is incredily important to use it often as most fights are quicker and easier to beat with magic then with bashing them. in the end you lose less hp most of the time using magic then melee to win. because of this is why you may have found paladins quests battle system so hard... tho personally i love the game because its one of the first games i played. while i admit the writing of the game to not be amazing I love the complex battle system.

Another thought: What about 7th Saga? I know that game is absolutely hard-as-balls and if you're going to play that, you probably want a rebalance patch for a ROM or something, unless you wanna grind your eyeballs out, but it's a turn-based J-RPG style game that has an odd perspective on the combat (from behind your character rather than the side) and it has a rather fast-paced combat but yet still lets you stop and think when you need to. Oh, and.... it's balls hard. Did I say that already?

Sadly, I think the traditional turn-based JRPG is pretty much dead. Whenever re-releases get released, people complain that such systems are "out-dated", "cheap", etc because it's not an Action RPG like the newest stuff (like that abomination that is FF7's reboot). Whenever someone makes an old style turn-based RPG, people will just say "Oh, that's just more RPGMaker junk" ... but there ARE a few gems. Try looking up a game called Skyborn on Steam. It's a JRPG-style game with a turn-based combat system with a wicked curveball: it has MMO-style threat/aggro mechanics. I know that sounds weird, but I feel they pulled it off, awesomely so.

Lennus 2? I actually played through a good portion of that game. I feel conflicted about it. I thought it was going to be a direct sequel which it isn't quite that. Granted it's more of a sequel than Mystic Ark was to 7th Saga. That was just mislabeled by magazines as 7th Saga 2 anyways. Anyhow Mystic Ark is rather bad imo Lennus 2 has its moments. The beginning of the game never really grabbed me it isn't until some events happen that it does get better.

I'm sure you care about her opinions more than mine, but as for me I liked a lot of Playstation rpgs, especially Star Ocean:2nd Story and Suikoden. As for Mother 1, if you take it for what it is an oldschool rpg it can be rather enjoyable though there is no doubt there is a lot of training/grinding required in it. Its gets punishing later too. As for Mother 3 I don't know what it is, but I just couldn't quite get into it. Must be something not working right in my brain.

Tecmo's Secret of the Stars is without a doubt, one of the wackiest RPG's I have ever played! To me that is what made it so memorable and why I find myself coming back to it!

I love Inindo! Im playing it at the moment. Its definitely tough and grindy with crude graphics. But I really personally enjoy it. With that said I would not recommend it to anyone. Dont know what that says about the game lol! 😅
@notyoursavior787 жыл бұрын
Inindo is definitely grindy I agree there but it just felt so alive to me back then. It also felt like such a unique RPG with so many different things to do in it. It still stands out to me as being rather unique to this day.

Hi Daria. Have you ever played Sailor Moon Another Story (Snes)?

Um, Secret of the Stars is a great game and ridiculously underrated. It may not be on the same level as greats like Final Fantasy 4-6, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana and others, but it's fairly close in my book. This is especially the case when you consider that it was originally released in 1993 in Japan. The game did some really cool things, some of which you really never saw back then. Secret of the Stars had Unity Magic where you could combine different characters' spells together, very similar to what Chrono Trigger would do 2 years later with it's dual and triple techs. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Squaresoft got the idea from SotS. You also have the town building feature you touched upon in the video. While you don't actually have any control over it, you do get to convince a small handful of people from other towns to move there which gets you access to items and such. Yeah, they could have done more with it, but it's still pretty damn cool. Also, the graphics are fantastic for 1993! Hell, they look pretty good even today. I'm actually quite shocked that you think they are terrible and suspect that there may be something wrong with your eyesight. They are cutesy and childish, but that's how most games back then were. The battle animations are great! They remind me much of Chrono Trigger, only they're obviously not quite THAT good looking. It does have some really goofy and downright ridiculous stuff in it(Cat Boo, BadBad, swinging around a mustache to cure people), but I think that's some of what makes the game so great. It's hilarious! The story is nothing special, but it's not bad really. It's okay, but it really could have used some character development because there really is none at all. The only thing really *bad* about the game is it's translation.

Another unique and interesting video by Daria, well done! I think Paladin's Quest is actually decent, but certainly difficult and super weird. Also maybe you were going for a play on words, but problems are exacerbated, while us players are exasperated when dealing with them.

7th Saga was more unique than weird. The most memorable aspect of it, however, was the insane difficulty (I know. I've played it!). I've heard the Japanese version isn't nearly as brutal.

Arcana is the only one of these I could finish, but another weird one to me is Brain Lord. It doesn't play that weirdly, but the story is bizarre and everybody is trying to make it to the magical city of Toronto.

Ohhhhh snappppp you are going to get SO much hate from the Earthbound/Mother fanboys for that LOL Paladin's Quest reminds me of Lagrange Point mixed with like...Phantasy Star for the battle aesthetics. Weird, indeed. I don't know what it is about card-themed or based games that completely turns me off from them. I remember being excited about Arcana until I heard about the cards, and then it was dead to me. Nice list!

If these are games that were too strange to get mainstream momentum, then yes I could agree. There are RPGs I would put as stranger than Arcana, though, namely 7th Saga, Mystic Ark, Shadowrun, Robotrek, and LiveALive.

I was really focusing on the US library (and I still say Shadowrun is more point and click than RPG). I still have to play 7th Saga tho.

Oh thank God! I thought you were going to shit all over my childhood, a.k.a. Arcana! LOL whew! I'm glad you actually like it. I remember losing the instruction manual as a kid on a family trip, so there was no way to find it again really. I was devastated for weeks lol! I beat it twice back then and would always load up my final save to replay for the final level's music. Yes, it was weird, but that is part of it's charm. It was so much fun to play because I had never played such a hard RPG at the time and it was my first 3D 1st-person view RPG, and yes, the cool card theme and the music as well. It's a shame it never got a sequel or remaster. One of the SNES's hidden gems IMHO.

Video idea: What exactly IS a JRPG? What makes a JRPG a JRPG?
@freakyfro997 жыл бұрын
Love it. It's especially a good idea considering how RPG elements exist in almost every genre nowadays. What makes something an RPG? What makes something a JRPG? It used to feel very clearly defined. Sometimes it still does but a lot of games muddy those waters.

:O Inindo is not weird! (Eh, fair.) And it's more Dragon Quest style than Final Fantasy. Very nice editing and excellent discussion, though. Arcana? Most definitely (but I didn't like it.) Paladin's Quest just has a steep learning curve, too many party members, and a lazier than average story. For a game that centers heavily around the main characters being wizards, it's actually quite balanced. Just annoying.

I always loved RPG's. I started with Lufia II, then played Secret of Evermore, Illusion of Gaia, Secret of Mana, later Tales of Phantasia and Tales of Symphonia, Skies of Arcadia and some more. All of the listed are great games in my opinion. I played others that where at least mediocre. I never thougt that there could be a RPG that ist bad. And then I played . . . Paladin's Quest. You nailed it. It's awfull. But I played it. I couldn't get the point of this mess. I played it till a point, where a giant strange head of a monster appears in the sky. I think it was over an island (Maybe before 6:37 min in your video). Then I didn't know where to go next. I dropped this fucking peace of shit. Everything is totally awfull. The grafics on the maps and the combats. It just looks not right. The story is also weird. The whole game sucks. It's been nearly 15 years that I played this crap. But when I think about it, it still makes me shiver. I wonder how people can develop such an ugly mess. I mean, didn't they see what they where doing and say: "We failed. Let's start from stratch."
