I am considering my options for adding some soundproofing in an apartment. Do you have any suggestions for soundproofing in a place where you can't nail or glue things to the walls? About the only idea I had was making big fabric covered panels of some kind that could be held against the wall by furniture.

From soundproofing a vehicle - Astroturf rubber underlay is cheap and effective. It is like bonded crumb rubber, good to add mass and for flooring. Office floor tiles - with the bitumen back; Fix them IN REVERSE using velcro hook. This isolates vibration, absorbs it with the fluffy side and dampens vibration with the hard back as well as blocking transmission. Cover over that with any fabric or carpet you like. Use Fibre pin board inside of art canvas frames to absorb noise on large open walls, and have nice picture too on walls that echo.

I put together a new bed for relatives, and held onto the mattress before discarding, storing it upright against a wall. That mattress alone quieted the heat exchanger, outside noise, and even my typing on my computer (er, I still have a "manual" touch on electronic keyboards). The effective noise abatement made me look again at DIY Perks channel for his cheap, framed bath towels as acoustic absorbers.

Bookcases can CONDUCT sound as much as reduce it. Adding books will not necessarily help, and could actually increase sound conduction. If you use the bookcases to decouple the wall surface, adding a space between the bookcase and the wall, you might get good results.

So I run an acoustical consultancy company. It might be because most of these tips would be minimally effective. Most of them would cost more than some professional advice. Hanging a coat on a door, and putting a sofa an inch in front of the wall, and closing curtains will make no noticeable difference to the noise level. In all fairness, closing windows would obviously help block external sound.... but egg creates, when measured in a lab, do nothing. No scatter, no diffusion of sound. He gets a dislike from me just for suggesting egg crates. That's an industry no no.

Honestly, best way I find is to just lay another layer of plasterboard if it's an existing wall with a layer of green glue inbetween the existing layer and the new layer. If it is a new wall, rockwool / staggered studs and double plasterboard with green glue plus using acoustic caulk to seal up any air gaps inbetween joints and on the floor / ceiling.

Thank you for this very informative soundproofing hack video... I learned a lot... I live in a densely populated area in Arizona in a poorly insulated small guesthouse with single-pane windows in my landlord's back yard. The air conditioners running on every roof is loud enough, but here's the double-punch... there is a swimming pool in our yard and in several neighbor's yard with pumps and cleaners running nearly full-time. The noise and vibration is keeping me awake at night. I want to know what insulating material you recommend that I can use to build / create a little bed-surround canopy 4-sided covered surround (wood frame most likely) to create a frame around my bed and insulate it from outside noises as much as possible. I don't own the property, so can't add insulation to the walls or floors or ceiling and can't change out the windows. So far, from watching your video, I can try some of the hacks like a carpet or two under my bed and in the bedroom, tapestries on the wall, heavy curtains over the windows, but want to build a canopy like structure around my bed with cheap lumber from Habitat for Humanity Restore (donated building supplies), build a 6-10" rise platform for the bed, and I can add insulation inside the platform. The engines running the pool cleaners are loud and vibrate through the walls and windows and I think even the ground because I hear and feel it when I press my ear to the floor, like a helicoptor is landing or hovering in my yard. Can you help or advise me on the type of material or curtains to use as the bed canopy? I heard your info bout moving blankets. Elsewhere I read about Rockwool?? Help! Slowing going insane! Thank you.

A cheaper, temporary fix is a tent with something as close to weatherproof insulation under the mat, and cheap gator clips for tarps, blankets on top. Have had noisy neighbors and my last place In needed to insulate from connecting neighbors, street noises both weatherwise which helped double as soundproof. Refletix helped and it was portable into my new place so right now the noise is acceptable, fine as blessedly these placed built solid. Am going to finishing up lining my cabinets with the Reflectix as a sound barrier from me possibly to my neighbors. But using in place of shelf lining, contact paper. Live now in a temperate climate near the ocean so no extreme summer-winter extremes. But dampness I am told can be an issue. Ceiling fans and at night I turn on the HVAC a bit to help with my arthritis. Refletix I fear possibly dampness underneath. It does do well at retarding the black ants from trying to invade my pets good bowl in another room and areas of the kitchen. They have found ways deep inside my pantry so finding the block is hard. Oh, thick painters canvas cloth and duckcloths I believe offer the most insulation. My last place poorly built but I had started an insulation wishlist or to do researching and pricing all kinds of materials. That included outlet and foam sealers for lighting, electrical which I also took with me. Take the ovals from the foam outlet seals, cut slits to go over dollar store child proof socket dealers. Use masking tape first before I used white duct tape. Not a miracle product on most of my outlets-lightswitch plates except a few. Masking tape first because for this and the Reflectix and duct tape products I used for other projects, when I moved, they needed to be sanded down by maintance and I got charged a bit. Also my downstairs connecting neighbors frequent visitors smoked everything under the moon including burned foods. And their many potlucks in too small of a place, I kept getting their ants so another benefit to masking tape then duct taping the outlet covers. Did not want to complain or be viewed as s snitch ad it's against rules but that place in a highly infested ended up the last half of my rental history there. Huge immediate bonus is noticing the retention of my winter heat-,summer air conditioner. Lots of people visit but figured out they depended on me to heat-cool them. In a few different chats they got snippy and accused me of stealing their electric and gas from them. The meters are outside their windows, direct view and the geothermal gas units locked up by staff. Good luck with their next tenant moving in after me. Gratefully and surprisingly am in a better sound and temperature insulated place. I intentionally also made an extra goal to take my materials with me especially the double rod curtains as I was ready to put on up in the old place. Have too many curtains now. Some are going to repack the family heirlooms and some rolled up on top of the closets to help.retain heat and add a bit of extra sound insulation which I really do not need but am sure my neighbors appreciate.

The sound absorbing paint seems like an intriguing possibility for a condo. I was wondering if this product would have any effectiveness in reducing the sound of footfall or dropped items or furniture dragging from above? What would you say is the reduction in sound perception - 10%? 50%? If it’s at all effective, this could be a game changer for people living in condos who can’t undertake adding resbar + additional drywall on a condo ceiling without also having to remove and realign ceiling fixtures in every room. Plus the mess of installing and mud/sanding.

I'm moving into a flat (rented) and the walls are fairly thin, same with the ceiling! I like my music as a DJ and it can be bass heavy at times, plus being a singer, I will need to rehearse. What would be the best and cheapest way to sound proof my main two rooms to minimise disruption/disturbing mg new neighbours? Any advice and guidance would be greatly appreciated!

I am currently living near a busy intersection with quite a bit of sirens during the day. Are there any software assists or mikes which sound cancel the frequencies of sirens? I really do not want to have to record in the middle of the night. This is a different kind of sound management.

Hi. If I build a new room with brick walls , it will be double brick walls with a 50mm caverty between the outside course and the inner course. Then I place a insulating material in the caverty similar to that product that is layed in the ceiling for heat. Will this be effective. ?

Get canvas stretchers. If you have to buy them, each side is three or four dollars. But, no effort in cutting, just lock together. Use old beach towels, old mattress cover is itself layers, cut to size, layer after layer. Staple gun the layers to the wooden canvas stretcher. Top cover is pretty fabric. Lots of giveaways or run a freebie ad to have remnants come to you. If you do a few, do a few more to giveaway to seniors or to trade for material.

@jamesmchugo9422
@jamesmchugo9422 3 жыл бұрын
The best the paint can do is about 10 dB. And it’s recommended you apply 3 coats at $70 a gallon, I do not know what the coverage is per gallon. A good quality regular paint can be purchased for around $40 dollars, granted regular paint probably has zero noise reduction. I don’t know for sure. 10 dB is the sound a leaf makes when it falls to the ground. Normal speaking voice, a regular conversation is about 60 dB. Standard 5/8 inch Sheetrock can reduce sound about 34 dB. If you just double regular 5/8 inch Sheetrock you can get at least 50 dB of noise reduction. With insulation and a third layer of 5/8 inch Sheetrock on the other side of the wall you can get at least 60-65 dB of noise reduction*. Sound can still transfer through the studs, outlets and heat ducts. I know this because I just isolated my utility room from the rest of the house. The blowers on the furnace and water heater can reach 80dB, now I can barely hear them. Mostly it’s sound that can still travel through the ductwork, now it’s a manageable background noise. There is a product called Quietrock, it claims to reduce noise by something like 54 dB. It’s also about 4 times more expensive than standard Sheetrock and is only 1/2 thick. Most fire codes require 5/8 inch. But at $70 a gallon for maybe 10dB of noise reduction, I think I’d pass on the paint. And the noise reduction paint only comes in grey. If you paint over it, I have no idea how it effects the noise reduction. Hopefully this helps you with your sound proofing needs.

I close all the doors & windows after which I dont hear the music but still I could feel the vibration (I guess it is the bass from the speaker not sure though). Great video. I have a heavy-duty speed bag platform bolted to the wall (through studs) in my finished attic. House is relatively new, 2013, construction. Yet still vibration can be felt throughout the house. Placing heavy sandbags on top during use helps. I wondered if also placing foam pads or rubber between the brackets and wall would help much? It would have to be thin rubber so that the bolts can still be driven relatively deeply into the studs in order to support the weight of the platform. If I instead used foam pads, they would become very thin as they are squashed when I tighten the bolts. Would “squashed” foam still be effective at minimizing vibration?

put something like rubber pads under the feet, and see if it's touching something that's unintentional amplifying its sounds, also you can encase the fridge with something solid, just make sure the back of the fridge is vented, the air needs to be able to escape at the back of the fridge, for the fridge to dissipate heat out the back. Other the fridge won't work properly.

Hello. I have an old style wooden window (90cm x 90cm) with a two way open systen. Each way has a glass in middle (70cmx35cm). I need to prevent outside noise of dog barks and marble cutting machine noises which should be around 65db when heard from inside the room and windows closed. I have ordered and not yet received the soundproofing tape which i believe to be a solution for my problem but not sure. I am giving a hit and trial and trying my luck you can say. Do you think it shall work? Yes ? No? What could be a better solution? I am little confused honestly.

Hi Soundproof Guide, would you say that plywood is better at soundproofing than drywall? And if plywood wins, would you say that a protective layer of linseed oil (safe alternative to chemicals that treats wood) would help block more sound? As to create an impervious surface and also protect the wood for longer. Not sure if this helps with sounds at all which is why I am asking. It is just my thinking and me trying to think outside the box. The reason I'd rather use plywood is because I am trying to soundproof my basement. And plywood is less prone to molding.. Ty : )

dude this really doesnt make any sense at all...none of these 'hack' actually work soundproofing your room/house...at nr one, which is BY FAR the cheapest and easiest, you should put: making an extra wall with drywall, and fill it with Rockwool. Do double plaster sheets with silicone in between for REAL sound proofing. This is easier, much better, faster and in the end cheaper then wasting time and money on all these 'hacks'. Except double glass ofcourse, which is good (but can be expensive for a whole room, depending on room size).
