Sound deadening curtains reduce audio on average 3-5 percent. For walks remove the molding taken old stuff interior shower curtain sheets cut to fit was Use spray glue then add an additional sheet of Drywall over the original with the shower sheet. Reinstall the molding and you're good to go.

I live on a busy road and the traffic noise at 5am is very annoying when I'm trying to sleep. Allegedly they are already double paned and there are fairly heavy curtains right across the bay style window, which I call a win-door, as the opening section is a vertical door 1 of 4 full length windows, the others are fixed window panels in solid wooden frames, 2 on about a 60 degree angle. This creates the bay effect, which means the curtain is about 1.5-2rt from the window. And actual help, nothing I'm in a rental property would be much appreciated.

Years ago I binge watched a bunch of seasons of 30 Rock. I happened to have my laptop connected to an old 8 channel PA system with a pair of very large house speakers and several stage monitors. The house speakers had massive 36" woofers and a folded horn passive port, and extremely large horn tweeters. It reproduced a very large range of frequencies. Somewhere along the line, one of the seasons, there must have been construction outside of the building where they filmed the series, because for the rest of that season and for at least the next one or two seasons, almost every scene involving dialog had the sound of dump trucks pulling away and shifting gears. At first it was barely noticeable, but once I noticed it, it became hard to ignore. I was able to drop a few bands on the parametric eq to help silence it, but it was always audible to some extent. I studied sound reinforcement at a community college years ago. We covered the issue of external noise and sound deadening materials, soundproifing, etc, as part of a "constructing a studio" course module. I'm surprised NBC hired sound guys who didn't account for that nose interference.

OK, not a video I expected :-) - basically about elimination of building shortcomings. With aircrete walls (both outside and inside), triple-pane well sealed windows, interior doors with a lip & seal included by design, with a concrete slab between ground and 1st (US 2nd) flooor with XPS "step-on" insulation as per local EU code and design, etc. - those tips are not applicable to my house or most houses in this part of Europe built recently. Its not the same everywhere in EU though, i.e. in Ireland squeaky unsealed interior doors are common, as well as hollow plaster board walls or joist & board floors, even though they use brick or block for outside walls. I guess when you grow up seeing something, it becomes normal to you, so we end up with different expectations about our homes.

A really soundproof room has to be disconnected from the surrounding walls and the floor (room in room build). That's not so cheap and easy to build and it needs space. It is better to use wooden window shutters from outside. Thick Molton is the choice for inside curtains. And in addition you need acoustic treatment inside the room to hinder reflexions and reverb.

Best advice I seen on KZbin. I had a shared wall in my downtown condo between my living room and a neighbor's bedroom. Eight grand later, no noise from my sound system was heard in my neighbor's bedroom. Everything he suggests has to be done and done correctly, but the end result is blissful silence.

Some really good advice. The terms for the distinction between reducing sound from outside, vs echoes is Noise Reduction vs Acoustic Treatment. As an audiobook narrator, I’ve had to do all of this, but especially acoustic treatment to cut reflection. You’re so right about the price differential with the added “acoustic” in the name. Such a scam… usually. I DID pay extra for “Acoustic Blankets” vs heavy duty moving blankets and, for my purposes, they were well worth the extra cost. They are thicker, denser, and easier to use. But regular mov8ng blankets do a pretty decent job.

from 1982-2000 I built dozens of recording studios/production studios. There is no cheap way to 100% soundproof anything, but I got close. Now I'm a consultant for podcast studios, but the budgets spoken of are a joke, so all the potential clients think they can do is glue foam panels to the walls! In the 60s, when rehearsing, we put egg boxes on the walls....we still got kicked out!

I’d build a few BBC dispersion panels for the wall my speakers point to, and surround them somewhat with acoustic absorption panels. I definitely need to build a window plug.I also plan to design three large overlapping sound clouds with two Philips Hue downlights. Bass traps in every corner and because I have a closet and a notch space next to the closet for the door to open I’ll just put a run to hold a theater curtain on that side of the room. Floors are carpeted already. I would like to treat the two exterior walls with mass loaded vinyl as well.

Why not mention also that acoustic panels are meant to help reduce echos and control the sound environment. I guarantee you if I put sound panels in my room the sound characteristics of that room will DEFINITELY change, and you'll notice it, so you're not being accurate here, you make it sound like they do nothing, or your ears suck.

Hi ! My ceiling in the basement has a big metal tube (air duct for ventilation). We are soundproofing a room, but I fear this duct will be the limiter for how good the results will be, especially because of the opening that allows for air to go into the room. Any recommendations/videos where you mention how to deal with this ? Thanks !
