My husband discipled me 37 years ago, and he asked me not to read any books about the Bible for 5 years. I only read the Bible( I did use a concordance) for those years. He thought it would be hard for a new Christian to discern truth from error without knowing the truth FIRST. It has been such a blessing to me!!!

The one book that influenced my life was the life story of Nicky Cruz, Run Baby Run. I was 15 and in reading class our teacher who was a Christian had us read this book, I knew the story and had seen the cross and the switchblade, but this book really impacted my life, I gave my life at the age of 17, later in in church I saw my teacher, I was able to let her know how I became a Christian and how she influenced me, eventually I got to see Nicky Cruz preach. I still have a copy of Run Baby Run

I remember perusing The Purpose Driven Life and wondering why a Christian pastor would quote Mother Theresa. Turns out she was no mother Theresa. Rick Warren is no pastor I would recommend. He brags about himself way too much. I’m not saying everything he’s done is wrong, but he’s a chameleon who you’d be wise to stay clear of. He’s an ecumenical nightmare.

I have a few of those books. The commentary on Matthew by John R. Rice is excellent in my opinion. I met him about a year after I got saved probably 1978 in Charleston S.C. and asked him to pray for me which he stopped in hallway, put his hand on my shoulder and prayed for me. I never forgot it. He was without a doubt the best Christian man I ever met. His commentaries have a definite devotional tone to them and I strongly suggest that they could be read devotionally. Dr. Rice not only was a greatly used man of God, but he was more of a Bible scholar than he's given credit for and I recommend all his commentaries. I have them all as well as a number of his many books. Even if you may not agree with every single thing he says, I guarantee that you will be blessed. Dr. Rice wrote those commentaries originally as part of a Bible correspondence course for preachers if I remember correctly. You won't go wrong especially on any of his 3 commentaries on Matthew, Luke, and John. All of them are good but these were a particular blessing to me personally.

@leodirectvleo17032 жыл бұрын
@@sketchstuffs Still wrong, because it is the word of God that change someone's life. It is not the preacher. The word of God sometimes needs an instrument for a better 'understanding'. But in the end, you go to the word of God and you will see if what the preacher says is according to the Bible and if it has sense. But to get to that point it is necessary to ask Lord for his work through His spirit dwelling in a believer. For example, 10 years ago, I got a better understanding on how bad are charismatic churches but it wasn't till I listened a sermon about it, but I went to the Bible to make sure what the preacher was telling us about it. So I trusted the Bible more than trusting the preacher. :-)
