@oddvoid3 жыл бұрын
Well the funny thing is she is kind of wrong here, yes, it should be a separate sentence, if it supposed to be. "I use a lot of action in my dialogue tags," He said, while jumping up and down. "I use a lot of action in my dialogue tags," He said. He jumped up and down. Both right, even though the one uses the action as a sentence in a dialogue-tag; but both subtly convey something different.

I agree. These tips are helpful. Thank you. I've been working on a novel for 13 years, and start to finish was established early. However, the delivery and how to show the story was a challenge. And most of all, what part should be the first chapter. It took me years to realize the best way to start a story is at the beginning. Now, the story moves forward--I'm almost there.

My biggest flaw was writing without direction. I had snippets of things I knew I wanted to be there, but the main plot was foggy in my head: I didn't even know the main evil's name or agenda, or what it even was. I just figured that I can come up with it when I get to those parts. And these things make it really hard to foreshadow and your writing directionless. ALWAYS have some plan, the wireframe of plot, and then you can wiggle in it while writing.
@robberblood5 жыл бұрын
I remember George Lucas saying one time in an interview that the whole Star Wars saga evolved out of one scene. The scene in question is where Obi Wan is standing over Anakin's charred body in Revenge of the Sith. From there he started asking questions like "Who are these people?" and "How did they end up here?" From there he slowly fleshed everything out. I've adapted this approach for myself where I'll write out multiple scenes with the protagonist (that have no connection with each other.) Most of the scenes aren't even used in the final draft but it does help flesh out the character and their motivations. Once the protagonist is worked out, I find it easy to create the antagonist.
@geraldfrost47105 жыл бұрын
@@robberblood The difference between being a "Plotter" and a "Pantser." Do you plot it out before you write, or do you simply write by the seat of your pants. Most people are somewhere in the middle. S King writes by the seat of his pants; you don't know where he's going because he doesn't know. It makes for good suspense, but the endings seem to sort of fade out. Lucas is a plotter; to the point of his first Star Wars movie wasn't any of what first hit the page (it was backstory that didn't get included for like five more movies.) You can tell a plotter because after the death star blows up, you have a bit of cheering and then roll credits.

This is just so RIGHT. Even when I recognized this mistakes long time ago (just because I hated seeing them on my reads, and then that became helpful when you start writing seriously), the real fight is fix them. Mi big problems are those chapters or scenes with "no directions" I see them clearly but I just dont know what to put in the middle of the two moments that I have planned. And yes... I like names with the same letter, it's like a sickness! But is a fun and enjoyable process (excuse the writing, but english is not my first language)

I have not written anything in a few years, because after reading a lot, I realized I might not be talented enough at it :D. And yes, I had made quite a few of the mistakes. Self-inserting: for my first drafts, hell yes... and, at the ripe age of 12, I thought that I would not be obviously self-inserting if I put the setting into a different country and changed the name to the local version (in that case, English, as it is not my native tongue) :D. I also fell into the trap of overdescribing physical appearances, not only all the physical attributes in the beginning but for the main characters, every single time they had a new outfit, I described the outfit head to toe... it did not have any importance to the plot whatsoever than showing that the main heroines are fashion forward in a modest way and the main heroes dress in a stylish way. What other mistakes I have made and I see others making: - not understand how much is in a name. A name is something you receive from someone, unless you change it. You have to take the character's background, the name-giving habits in their culture (like, in contemporary Western settings, their nationality, their parents' personalities, their parents' social level/status, their parents' taste) into consideration. Some name giving just does not make sense at all. Especially when they want to make "meaningful"/"talking" names. Like calling the most mundane couple's son Phoenix just because he is going to learn at one point that he can turn into a Phoenix... when that certain couple would probably only choose from the top 10 baby name list not to be too weird with their name giving. - the "wishful thinking" main heros... where the main hero/ine is basically the unrealistic version of the author's self without any internal flaws (or if there are flaws, they are like, I'm too naive, too clumsy... anything that is to be seen adorable), only physical, if there is any. This also makes really unrealistic events in stories like this (the typical example I see is 2-4 hunky really muscular guys drooling all over the unpopular fat acne-faced frizzy-haired main heroine who was unnoticeable and unpopular in the beginning of the book, just for their beautiful soul... it is not going to happen in real life, no matter how badly you want it...) - the author writing a contemporary story about a topic in a setting they do not know, they are not familiar with at all, and don't do any research. I have myself wrote a story where assassins were really focal to the story and I made up some really ridiculous and laughable stuff :D. I see this all the time. What I see a lot is Hungarian (my nationality) people writing stories about Western, mostly American and British people, in American and British settings and do not know anything about the customs, and keep mixing Hungarian customs in it, making the characters eat Hungarian dishes which might only exist in speciality shops in the US etc. I also see a lot of people writing their stories set in the past (by this, I mean at least 20-30 years ago up to Medieval Times usually), and they do not care to research what inventions had been made by that time, what foods they ate, what materials they had for clothing. I have seen people with stories set in 1000-1100s Europe with people drinking tea which came to the continent much later, characters calling stars/planets with names we use now which have not been discovered by that time and even sillier ones (like characters using tablets in the 70s)... or giving characters names that were not really used in that era or location (like calling a regency romance leading lady Makayla, Britney or Jasmiah, or calling a Scottish soldier in the early 1900s Amir). - trying to make a "unique" name by crazy spelling of a popular name. I mean, you can definitely make your character have a unique name - just go on to a baby name centre website and there are going to be ten thousands of options. And I still see writers write names like Jeszeykah instead of Jessica, and they legitimately think it is going to make their character unique and fun, when in reality, if they do not write the character to be unique, she is not going to be unique, just a plain Jane with a name that you're not sure how to pronounce. - introducing too many characters right after each other, especially if most of them are not going to play a crucial part in the story - the opposite of infodumping: when all the things make sense in the author's head,and that is why he does not realize he forgot to write down crucial information for the story to be understood by the reader (unless it is a conscious decision to keep the reader in doubt)

I think the secret to self incertion is introspection. The main character of my comic is meant to be me, and her love interest is essentially my boyfriend. The story is basically our story. But she is me because of how she makes decisions, how she thinks, and personality traits. When I write her, I think "Hoe would I respond if this happened to me?" To give her the real reactions I would have as a real person. Using MBTI and the Eneagram, I picked prominant flaws and struggles that I deal with and projected them onto her. Same goes for my bf's character. I think that this makes a selfinsert less..inserty because she doesn't just exist for wish fulfillment.
@SapphireCasburn Жыл бұрын
I don't agree that self-insertion is automatically bad. It depends on how it's done and what your brand is. Are you the brand? Many celebrities are their own brand. I think it really just depends what you do with it and if it's a good story

stage directions are necessary IF they convey emotions. If you're trying to tell me a character is sad then you can say they 'slumped' on the bed and cried. If you want to say they're angry then you can say they took a deep breath and glared pacing around the room. Stuff like that is important.
@kevinobrien26305 жыл бұрын
The problem with "show, don't tell", is that showing involves telling, while any form of telling involves showing; in other words, they are the same. You only confuse people if you instruct them to show, not tell, but you do not clearly define either showing or telling. also, On another video, another pro writer argued that "less is more" and used the example of a nervous character to advise writers just to write "she was nervous" rather than show her fidgeting as she spoke.
@carlydaniels41843 жыл бұрын
I have a silly question. Would you consider starting the first part of a novel in the first person and the second in the third? That's the direction I see completing the work. Although I've heard, it's uncommon.
@BizJetTV6 жыл бұрын
I have three books published and in my experience you end up with at least 3 drafts before the editor/publisher looks at it. Once you have finished you are at 5-7 drafts. However, you need to educate yourself and learn how to write from those that have done it successfully
@BizJetTV6 жыл бұрын
There is also only so much you can do on your own. After a couple of drafts you are going to need external feedback and this is where your Mastermind or Writers Group can help. Give the draft out to 5-10 different people that are maybe writers themselves and/or people that would read your genre. Ask them how the book makes them feel about the plot, setting & characters. the take that feedback on board and write third draft.

#2 had this problem, fixed this problem, intentionally did this problem in another story for a specific reason. I have my mc named Mariella, goes by Mari. Her best friend was named Marlie and waaay too close, after a year or so I realized that Monroe works for her really well and now she goes by Roe. Other story there are a group of people who all have names starting with N unless they use a nickname which some do. #3 after writing for around a decade, finally did this. In a fanfic. But after chapter 2 - which I wrote in what I still believe to be a trance induced by my muse and inner fangirl conspiring against me - I stopped, stepped back, got really freaked out by what I wrote, decided to roll with it, and now it's another version of who I could have been if life turned out differently. Still acts near the same as me, still responds the same way I would, but different experiences have made her different. #5 I do this sparingly. I do it often when a character is acting weird, or noticing something that is important to the storyline or just to show characters frustration that nothing is happening. #10 I have a hard time not putting too much foreshadowing. Like I want to believe my characters are smart enough to notice things, but in reality they're not and are supposed to be surprised. It's taken me a long time but I think I have it down.

@heyfell43012 жыл бұрын
Characters with similar names may be fun if you do that in a comedic way. Like having a comedy with few characters who all start with the letter K (just as a challenge, let me try that myself: "Kaiden, Kayle, Kayros, Kyaran, Katarina, Kennedy, Kley, Klaus. I officialy hate the letter K now, why are all the names so eccentric..?), so you have to invent a couple distinctive names for all of them. If they're all starting with the same letter but are different enough, your readers may think of it as an intentional in-joke instead of a flaw. Not related to writing and instead to RPG's, the rest of my party makes memes about how all my characters start with the letter A. "Aela, Aelyn, Aeon, Aiden, Alenya, Arumi..."

I disagree with the point about "writing unnecessary actions". Any action can be helpful if you are using it to break up longer sections of dialogue or narrative. Describing inconsequential actions can be a useful tool in keeping the flow of your story going or to increase immersion. Nobody wants to read a laundry list of chores, but claiming that you should never describe someone brushing their teeth unless they are interrupted by something crazy is unhelpful advice.

Hi Iasmina. So I'm a beginner. Haven't published anything yet but I've been practicing for the past five years. I'd just love to hear your opinion on this. So I have character a and b in a scene. Character a smiles and his teeth are very white. Character b comes from a culture where hygene is highly regarded and envies character A's amazing grin. The book is written in third person subjective narrator and the narrative voice proceeds detailing in a short paragraph the herbal mixture character b uses and how envious and amazed he is. It's telling not showing, I know, but character b is quite reserved. The setting is some medieval fantasy, hence the herbal mixture. Is it bad if I brought this little detail about a mundane action? You mentioned exactly brushing teeth and I laughed a little. Sorry for the long comment, keep up thr wonderful channel

Thank you so much for making videos like this! I'm interested in making a career out of writing, so videos like this are extremely helpful. I've recently written a short story and would love it if you could read over it and provide some feedback!

Hmmmm I probably made every mistake XD. I wrote one book but I don't think I'm talented enough to be a writer though. Anyone who manages to write a book and get it published has my respect, those are some truly talented and patient people.

Franz Kafka had a bad habit of naming characters similar to himself.

A solution which has not been foreshadowed is unsatisfying because it acts as a 'Deus Ex Machina'. The main point about foreshadowing is that the solution must be seen to have been rooted in the circumstances the characters found themselves in. So if Frodo is captured by two bad-tempered Orcs, it is in the nature of their characters that they will end up fighting each other over him, so he gets a chance to escape and so on.

Writing about non-humans automatically resolves many of these

Thanks for the video, Iasmina. I'd probably start with the most common mistakes/best piece of advice early in the video. Is it really an issue that people are wanting to publish a first draft? I mean, I teach kids that know that their first draft isn't the one we stick on the wall or take to the principal for a sticker. I think you might need to treat your audience with a bit more respect. If those people are your target audience, I've come to the wrong video. However, I appreciate some of your other suggestions which appeared unique to your video. Keep up the videos!

So, with info-dumping... I need an accompanying encyclopedia to avoid info-dumping.

In The Muppet Mystery there's an info dump by the lady who'd just hired Mrs Piggy as a typist. "Why are you telling me this?" Mrs Piggy asks. "It's plot exposition; it has to go somewhere."

Philip Dick inserts himself in the VALIS trilogy. Dante inserts himself in the Divine Comedy. Ask the dust is about Fante's true life, and the same goes for Bukowski. I can't see how this might ever be a problem - unless you are a bad writer, of course.

And this is a video for new writers, hence why I don't think it's a good idea to insert yourself into your books. Lots of fanfiction writers do this, and you can consider that bad writing. Of course anything can be done well by experienced writers if that's what they want to do but that's not what I'm talking about here

"No self insertion" too late. Way too late, which is why I'm writing under a pseudonym
