"always focus on making your sentences as easy to read as possible"? Where's the art in that? There's an unhealthy trend in making writing simpler and simpler, but simple writing does not always equal good writing.

Well done! It's a nice cover as well. Not easy to write and publish a book. Huge accomplishment. $1400 isn't too bad either. I'd say you should add in the cost of photoshop and all other software you used but assume you will use that for 3 books. So then 1/3 the cost per book. Even at $2k it's not that high. So now, how to get discovered and read by the masses who have no idea who you are and why they should read your book?
@IasminaEdina10 күн бұрын
Exactly, how???😂 I'm trying to figure that out, but it's very difficult.

Isamina I love your videos ,and I have read your book. I have a few constructive criticisms., from a male perspective the.cover is on the feminine side. Unfortunately, as the USA elections have shown us, misogyny and chauvinism are still prevalent in the world. JK Rowling shortened her first name to two letters so boys would by the books. I know this is your book baby, but most people aren't that evolved. I my edition US edition the vertical centering looks off. I am guessing its because the page number affects the centering.
@IasminaEdina10 күн бұрын
Yeah, I've considered using a pen name, sadly. And I'm not entirely ruling it out for future publications in different genres, but for this one I did a ton of research beforehand and everything I've done has been very purposeful. As for the vertical centering on your book, I saw when you posted the photos that it was off, but that's unfortunately a fault with the printer they decided to use that day, and outside of my control. If it really bothers you, you can always complain to amazon and have them send you another one. But it can be the luck of the draw. I've heard horror stories from other authors that sometimes the books are printed upside down, as in the cover is placed upside down. That hasn't happened to mine yet, but that's a downside to print-on-demand. They use whichever printer is closest to the buyer and available, and sometimes mistakes like that happen.
@MrSnakeyes5110 күн бұрын
@IasminaEdina no worries. You put so much effort into your book, making it right. I thought you would want to know. You could shorten your first name to Izzy.? Just a knucklehead Idea. Keep being you.

I love these kinds of videos. I don't know what route I want to try and take when it comes to publishing in the future, but it is always nice to see how self-publishing doesn't have a budget that fits all✨
@IasminaEdina17 күн бұрын
Absolutely, and I was exactly the same even before making the decision to go indie. Always watching other indie authors talk about how they do it and how much they spent, which ultimately helped me set a budget I was comfortable with. So I wanted to add my own video to the mix and give back some information 😊.
@breezlee5917 күн бұрын
You should be very proud of what you have accomplished and the investment you made in yourself. The cost is about a 3-credit college course and look what you have in return. I took away from a financial seminar: "Don't ask how much it costs but how much you can make from it." In your case, you are just starting so the sky is the limit. Thank you for a very informative video.
@IasminaEdina17 күн бұрын
Absolutely, self publishing, like any other business requires an upfront investment. And in theory, the more you spend, the more you get back. However, in the indie book world, most authors never make back the investment on that first book, so I wanted to be a bit smart about the amount I spend vs. what I expect to make back. I'm optimistic about the future once I have more books out there, but for now I am happy with what I've done and SO proud of the final product 😊.
@shaytal10017 күн бұрын
$1,400 is very little money when measured in the appropriate metric. The appropriate metric is the complete cost of producing the book. That includes your working hours! Unless you haven't written the book in 1 or 2 month, it really isn't a lot of money. I really hope you make at least this money back! Have not had the time to read it yet, but holidays are near!
@IasminaEdina17 күн бұрын
I really didn't want to add the hours spent working on it, considering I've been working on and off on this book since 2011 😂. I'd never make my money back haha. But all that work made it so that I now know so much more about crafting and writing a good book, which will make the other books I write a lot easier and take a lot less time. At least in theory.
@shaytal10017 күн бұрын
@@IasminaEdina Well, the things you learned writing and publishing this book is also on the revenue side. It is just hard to quantify. But when you write your "Game of Thrones" in the next few years you will laugh at $1400 :)

I did not have any of the software or the background in graphics to create my cover. I needed an editor. I didn’t know how to register my book (ISBN). I didn’t know how to get my book in stores or on vendor sites. All I had was my completed manuscript. My total…$8530.

Okay, so I may actually have some useful info to share for once. Still working towards my first novel, so take that for what its worth, but I've had some screenplays and journals printed through KDP before and done research on their printing processes. Print quality with AKDP can vary quite a bit as books are printed at many different facilities, and as you mentioned, even then those facilities have different types of machines that are occasionally upgraded. Printing only when there's free resources is how they keep costs low, so they'll use whatever machines are available. But despite the variance, there's things you can do to ensure better results. If anyone wants the best quality out of a printing job, be sure to send as hi-res a production file as possible. If you're an idiot like me you'll send them a low-res version on accident and get really poor results. :) Overall I've found the average quality of KDP books better than other printing places, you just need to do your research and understand what they expect from you. Could be my imagination, but I feel like the glossy covers hold up better in the long run... Thanks for the video Iasmina, it was nice to get a look at the differences between the two books in your case! I agree the colors come through in the glossy version more, you could lead the pack by breaking conventions and publishing your YA novels with gloss covers, start a trend haha
@IasminaEdina23 күн бұрын
Thanks for the info! I can attest to this, since now I have received copies from a couple different printers in Europe and there are differences, though small. Mainly the feel of the matte cover for example is different depending on the printer. And since I'm based in Europe I have only ever tested their printers, no idea how the printing quality is like in the US. And also about the higher res files, initially i sent the highest possible size, i think one was around 700mb 😅 but those came out crisp! When I tried lowering the size since i thought it was silly to send such big files, the result was also a bit lower quality and blurrier around the text, which is what I experienced in this video.
@phildiamond854923 күн бұрын
KDP book covers are poor - matte and glossy - they peel at the edges very quickly.
@IasminaEdina23 күн бұрын
I haven't really experienced that tbh, and I've read many books printed with KDP. Though I am generally gentle when it comes to handling books when reading, so your mileage may vary. I do think the quality varies a lot depending on which printer in which country is used, and we don't have control over that as authors.

This SAME thing happened with my hardcovers! They took forever to ship (and probably PRINT) even though they had preordered them MONTHS in advance. It said I was “sold out” for like 3 weeks and then finally resolved itself. But what a pain. It’s so unfair.

Yeah, it's very strange. What's also strange is that people who preordered on amazon got the amazon version and NOT the ingram version??? though they ordered it well before I made the switch so I'm just so confused. I assume that once they went to print them around release they saw the amazon version was available so just did that but...i'm really not sure I will do print preorders in the future 😅
