It's rather striking just how much influence Atari's business decisions had on other companies in the 80s, probably even more influential to the industry than their own hardware.

Kid in the US: "You wanna' come over and play with my Wii?" Nintendo should have put a 'wee' bit more thought into renaming it.

I so wish Nintendo had stuck with the development name Dolphin for the GameCube. It was a much better name IMO. I like to imagine an alternative universe where it's the Nintendo Dolphin, and they bought the rights to Ecco The Dolphin from Sega and made a new game that was amazing, along with a compilation of the old ones.

I had to tell ya I couldn't wait. I had the day off and as usual there's nothing to watch on tv. So I decided to nap and chose a stupid episode of the love boat to do it with. As I'm nodding out I see the stupid ship crew playing private eyes in Japan following a cruise passenger. They stop in front of a store and behind them the store window shows Popeye on the Famicom in the window with a Famicom console and a whole shelf of game n watch units including "ball" the first one launched. Then in the next scene the men are thrown through the store window and land on all the game n watches and the tv with Popeye falls on the console and disc drive. Some u could see were actually damaged including ball and the Famicom. Totally caught me off guard and my wife would smack me for telling her this story so I came right here to bother you with it

What nearly made things worse for the Nintendo Wii was the infamous "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" fiasco which lead to the accidental death of a single mother and possible criminal proceedings for a US radio station.

I have a question for you Laird with a backstory that you might be interested in hearing. For starters, I was a huge gamer during the 4th generation. I had both the Sega Genesis/Sega CD and Snes growing up. As I had them both I was always heavily interested in what new games and addons these machines would/or could potentially get. Here is where it gets interesting... Shortly after the launch of the Sega CD, Nintendo announced their own CD based addon. Now, we know what that hardware entails as a prototype has been found that works. However, this is not the add-on that was advertised in gaming mags across the US. Nintendo announced that their CD based add-on would be 32-bit all the way up until cancelation. They even printed specs for it that were wildly different than the Nintendo Playstation prototype we know today. Have you ever heard of this and if so was there any truth to it? Addendum- The Snes Super CD addon was supposed to be powered by a 21MHz NEC V810 32bit Risc processor w/512KB of RAM, 128KB Cache RAM, and 64K of video RAM. The total RAM was said to be between 904KB and 1416KB.

I seem to remember the PlayStation add-on was meant to have a 32-bit processor in it, after all the PS1 did. But you also have to remember that after the deal with Sony fell through they then partnered with Philips, so there was actually 2 different SNES CD add-ons! The Philips CD add-on has never been found. I would bet that a lot of what appeared in magazines was pure speculation anyway, given Nintendo were always quite secretive, as I detailed in this video. It's also worth noting that after the deal between Nintendo and Philips fell through too, the Dutch company developed the Jaguar CD for Atari.

A NEC V810 you say? That's really interesting, because that's exactly what the NEC PC-FX uses! Could it be that the PC-FX is also an alternative SNES CD?

I agree that Nintendo should have kept the Ultra64 name, since it was the natural evolution after "Super" (Famicom or NES), and also because the console was going to become the most powerful on the market. On the other hand, I'm glad we got the Mega Drive and not the Genesis in Europe. The Genesis name was disrespectful of the Master System's legacy, and led many people in America to believe that the Genesis was Sega's first console
@robintst Жыл бұрын
Naming it the Genesis here in the states is really no different than Nintendo never directly referring to the NES as a videogame console when it launched here. Both were a necessity to overcome negative perception through subversive marketing. Videogame was a dirty word after the crash of '83 hence it's the "Nintendo Entertainment System" with R.O.B. front and center in all the adverts. The Master System was a practical unknown in the face of Nintendo's 90% market share and Tonka mismanaged it's distribution horribly. They needed a clean slate for their public perception, it was SEGA's new beginning and the Genesis ended up doing gang busters taking half the market from Nintendo for a time.

IDK, for me, the Genesis name can mean a start of a new era & indeed it was one for Sega.

Oh, the Nintendo64...it always sounded like a Commodore64 rip-off for me! Nintendo should have kept the legacy with Famicom and Super Famicom, then releasing it as Hyper/Ultra Famicom/Nintendo all over the World! (IMHO)
