Forward pass or backwards out of the hands? Knock on or knock back? Try or no try? Rugby league is no stranger to controversy with big moments in big games sometimes being decided by a 50/50 call by the referees. We will be ranking this list based on moments that occurred in a finals series, state of origin match, or grand final. Some of these calls are correct, some of these calls are wrong but we will let you be the judge!

This shows that Sterling is the most unbiased commentator. He always calls it spot on even when it is against his team. Probably has a strong sense of justice after having to put up with Hartley making biased calls against Parramatta during his playing career.

Gee you parra supporters won't let it go will you. OK. Fact time. When Hartley stuffed the tackle count up manly put a bomb up near half way, got the ball back with 6 again and scored. How could he have engineered that. We also forget in that game manly was trailing 11-2 (remember only 3 points for a try then) and he sent manlys John Gray off. How's that for biased. Parramatta whinged the whole way through the 70's and they still whing to this day. The 75 semi against manly was a classic whinge fest ( Hartley wasn't a ref then). Every manly try was unfair according to Parramatta. They are the only team to have demanded to be awarded the title after the storms salary cap blow out.

As a Dragons supporter, let me just say, the Cowboys win in the 2015 GF was probably the most excited and the happiest I've ever been watching Rugby League in my whole life. No one, not even my Dragons, deserved a premiership more than Thurston's Cowboys after all the robbery you guys had been subjected to in the previous 3 seasons. The fact that Thurston, possibly the greatest player of all time, got to score the game winning field goal in golden point time was just the icing on the cake.

It's controversial in so much as it was a game-deciding try. Penalty tries are rare, penalty tries that decide a GF, I can't think of another instance outside of this. not many. Against sharks nobody wants to talk about wrong calls in cowboys favour that resulted in them being in a position to score a try rather than defending with sharks attacking their line becasue they wee not as big mistakes. However they were still wrong calls and cowboys would not have been in the game if they had been correct. Other than that if they were going to win the GF then they had over half the game to overcome it. If they couldn't then they just weren't good enough.

Disclaimer, I am not a Canberra or Roosters fan but I was at the 2019 grand final. For those still arguing whether the 6 again decision and reversal was correct or not, it actually doesn't matter as the referee is not allowed in this situation to change his decision. Refer to the following from the NRL rule book: Section 16. Duties of Referee and Touch Judges Changing decision 9. The Referee judges on matters of fact and shall not subsequently alter those judgments. He may cancel any decision made if prior foul play of which he had no knowledge is reported to him by a Touch Judge.

John Beaver except that rule doesn’t apply to mid play decisions. As long as a tackle hadn’t occurred from the time he called six again and then changed it back to 5th tackle which it didn’t. The 1999 Grand final penalty try is the right call. You can dress it up however you want but it doesn't change the fact that if you foul a player in the act of scoring a try and they do not ground the ball it is a penalty try. If Ainscough let's him ground the ball the conversion would have been from further out. Also don't forget Mundine being a glory hog and dropping the ball over the line with an unmarked Darren Tracey in support.

Had the ref not corrected its call in the Roosters v Canberra, the argument would have been that he made a wrong call because Tedesco never knocked that ball on. As for a more controversial result than that, the 2010 Saints v Roosters GF when the video ref award a try to BMoz to win the Grand Final only for the replay to show that BMoz had put his foot on the sideline as he was scoring a try which gave them the game and the trophy.

Paul Gallen saying: “This is ridiculous, where this is getting!”, after six years of close games, desperation and repeated heartbreak - and yes, absolutely terrible refereeing decisions (on both sides) - everyone in Australia, regardless of where they’re from could agree with Gal there. I wouldn't say they didn't deserve to win. Roosters 100% deserved to win just as much as the raiders. dunno what you're bitching about, considering inglis should have been playing nsw, and not queensland. he was born nsw, started playing nsw, represented in nsw, but somehow qualified for queensland... bit like robbie o'davis way back, where he represented both states, nsw first, then when queensland bawled like bitches, went to the maroons. there's always controversy in state of origin, but you couldn't get a clearer knock on than in the case of greg inglis' try. great player, deserved the records, but that was a bullshit call no matter what. nothing justifies all that.
