2:10 was completely justified and the right outcome. He was illegally holding onto a player and preventing them from rejoining the game. The player did not strike them aggressively, they only hit their hands to force them to let go. He knew he was holding him illegally and why he was being hit, so he could have let go at any time but he persisted. Then he stands up and without justification strikes the other player(that he had already fouled for the last 5-10 seconds) in the face.

Totally. Not one of the three Scotsmen involved ever propelled that ball forwards. But also understandable - except at this level. Ref should have given the benefit of the doubt (that he must have had otherwise he would be insane). We see more of that nowadays.
@iangrubb64706 жыл бұрын
I agree. Referee's make mistakes and at this level it's not good. We have TMO'S for a reason. Now we have TMO's that communicate and tell them when the ref on the pitch is wrong. That's a good thing. Rugby is a great example that other sports should follow when it refers to video decisions. They rarely get it wrong. It's just a pity the decision in this one was wrong. It cost Scotland a deserved place in the final.

@Karma-qt4ji5 жыл бұрын
The controversy was amplified by the fact that there had been two similar incidents in the competition up to that point, both had only received yellow cards, and this single decision handed the game to the French on a silver plate. Way, way, way too many poor refereeing decisions throughout the tournament, that led to the final game, where New Zealand as hosts played against statistically the worst team ever to make a final - and then only scraped home by one point helped along by further poor refereeing.

@Karma-qt4ji6 жыл бұрын
There was more than just this one tackle. Looking back at the competition one would not be remiss in thinking that perhaps the All Blacks had had their path to the win paved by incompetent refereeing. Bryce Lawrence reffed the game between Ireland and Australia, harshly penalising Australia and allowing a famous Irish victory. In doing so, he ensured that Australia would come up against South Africa in the 1/4/ final, which he reffed. Following the Ireland Australia game, he wrote a letter of apology to Australia and then went on to completely destroy that 1/4 final with probably the most controversial refereeing display in the history of the game. That year, on his retirement (albeit slightly forced) NZRU awarded him with the Ref of the Year award - yet more controversy as it looks suspiciously like "thanks for the World Cup". There were other controversial issues at the tournament; France were fined something like $20 000 for crossing the half way line during the Haka, some poor Pacific Islander was fined a ton of cash for wearing the wrong brand of gum guard, yet England were caught using an illegal ball for Wilkinson's goal kicking and.... NOTHING!! Referees were appointed against RWC policy, where there country had a vested interest in the outcome of the game. Nigel Owens (Wales) reffing the (final) South Africa pool stage game against Samoa, the one where Frans Steyn got injured. A letter from Owens to the Bok camp after the match apologised for allowing the foul play against them to get out of hand and thanked them for not losing their cool and retaliating. The tackle shown here was the third spear tackle of the competition and the only one that resulted in a red card. This incident ended that game as a competition and resulted in a yawn fest, allowing France to get to the final, the first team to do so with two pool stage losses. tl:dr - everything about that World Cup led to the All Blacks losing all decent competition and paving their way to victory. The same was said in 2007 about the Springboks because the All Blacks were kicked out by the French forward pass, but the difference is that that was only one forward pass. 2011 was so much more than that.
@TomosANTIGUATomos6 жыл бұрын
It was the correct call, certainly. The controversy lies in that the guidance given to referees was not widely publicised, so tackles that were yellows before the tournament began suddenly became reds without most spectators understanding why. A controversial change in protocol rather than a controversial decision.
@Karma-qt4ji6 жыл бұрын
This does not explain the two yellow cards given for spear tackles in the tournament before this one...
@TomosANTIGUATomos6 жыл бұрын
Karma, you are correct. The refs inconsistently applied the guidance that was given to them before the tournament, which made the decision in the SF stand out. All in all, the IRB made a pig's ear of the whole thing. They failed to properly publicise the guidance to the public, and they failed to get most of the refs to properly apply the guidance up until the semi-final. All in all, they messed up, and Allain Rolland got unfairly vilified by the press and the public. But then again, what else should we expect from the IRB/World Rugby? This is the organisation that experimented with the idea that players could use their hands in the ruck for years when everyone with a brain knew all you had to do was be strict on tacklers releasing and rolling away.

Nothing "controversial" about - the Warburton tackle - the law at the time said that if the players hear, neck or shoulders hit the ground, it was an offence, and the direction to referees at the time (and still in place today) is that if a tackler drives or drops a player into this position, it's a straight red. The ref made the right call. - the Korean player's tackle - no arms in a grass cutter is highly dangerous, and referees have been instructed to penalise these types of tackles harshly. - the Irish player against South Africa - from the angle shown, contact was made with the upper chest/head area. - McAlister against the French - he moved his running line into the path of the French player coming through, impeding (it doesn't help that he dropped the shoulder). - the French shot at goal that fell over - if you choose a shot, you need to make a genuine shot at goal. 100% correct referee decision (if the French player had simply stopped his approach and reset the ball, then there would have been no problems). I.e. the French player just fucked up.

That is not true, the accidental offside is a rule that is only applied when a player cant help receiving the ball when he is caught out at an offside position, however he received the pass and could've avoided it, and he knew what he had done wrong a second too late. Beauden Barrett would have gotten a successful conversion from there. However seeing as the french don't like the all blacks they try to make things harder for them and call bullshit. I will say that the reffing for the second and third tests was piss poor, however I admit that the All blacks played bang average for their standards in the last two tests and that the Lions did play quite well but with shit discipline in the second test. Overall both of the refs in the last two tests were french and they both made controversial calls and for the most part they were against the All Blacks. But the Lions did play very well and quite frankly even as an All Black supporter, I believe that All Blacks didn't deserve to win after their sloppy performances.

Why do there are so many french tries wich are considered like controversial, such as the try with michalak, nothing wrong in this action🤣
@Littlelurch852 жыл бұрын
I disagree about the Lambi card, that red was definitely deserved! When charging down a player/kick and you jump into the air you are meant to face the player head on,. You are not allowed to turn side ways and deliver what can be called a high late tackle on the kicker. Let alone make contact to the head in anyway what so over. If that hip strike made contact with the shoulder and not the head it would have been a yellow and a player would not have been removed from the field on a stretcher

Nothing controversial about Stander, it was late and very high (hips/butt hit Lambie on head).....that was the first of the concussions that caused his retirement from rugby at 28 years old and he is a great player

The thing about the Scotland one was that 10 seconds earlier, Stuart Hogg was shoulder charged to the head off the pitch and Joubert didn’t notice. Disgraceful

Bullshit. Scotland got 9 points courtesy of Joubert fuck ups in scrums - 3 times the Scots illegally collapsed the scrum (including one time when Nel was being absolutely monstered, the breakaway collapsed it), yet each time, Joubert awarded penalties to Scotland for Australia collapsing. And that doesn't cover that most of the 50-50 calls went Scotland's way. But by all means, continue to focus on the one decision all day that didn't go the Scots way...
@matthewalcorn63166 жыл бұрын

scotland would've been in the final vs the all blacks if joubert didn't mess up - they'd have had argentina in the semis and scotland are like kryptonite to them right now. joubert ran off the pitch at full time, knowing he'd ruined the tournament for a lot of people.

@disco1974ever6 жыл бұрын
Accidental offside is when the ball hits your arms not when you catch it realise you made a mistake and then change your mind. Doesn't mean ABs should of won, it's up to them to score enough that it takes the ref mistakes out of the game, that's the lesson of RWC07
@ewokOfNZ6 жыл бұрын
Agreed, As a Kiwi I thought the result was a fair result for the tour , but I was incredibly disappointed that it had to end in such away. Still smarting over 07 though :)
@TomosANTIGUATomos6 жыл бұрын
This is incorrect. Accidental offside is when the referee judges that the player could not have reasonably avoided being contacted by the ball. If the referee judges that a player could not have reasonably avoided being contacted by the ball, it does not matter whether he drops it or catches it and turns upfield. Even if Ken Owens doesn't catch it, the ball would still have struck his arms or torso. Consequently, it's correct to have ruled it an accidental offside.
@zephanish6 жыл бұрын
I honestly thought that the 2007 campaign while extremely frustrating and disapointing was the catalyst that took the all blacks to the next level, the change in player mindset, the new culture that was enforced after 07 propelled Nz to the next two world cups and to the even more dominant position where they are now
@adepose6 жыл бұрын

Lots of people don't understand the definition of 'controversial', even if it was the right decision that doesn't mean it wasn't controversial. Take the Warburton call for example, I agree with it but based on the reaction of the commentators you can see that it is obviously controversial.
@qmkut91212 жыл бұрын
Plus a half-French referee shouldn’t have been allowed to referee such a high profile game involving France. And the 2011 world cup in general was horrific for refereeing.

How is Sam Warburton's tackle controversial ? He lifts the player, lets go of him, lands on the head/shoulder area, automatic red card. The rule is the same for every game, it doesnt matter if its the final or a test match, rule's the same
@andystrachan5985 жыл бұрын
I know I'm biased, but Craig Joubert ruined Scotland's World Cup with that (in my opinion) incorrect offside penalty. Its a tough call, but I think he got that wrong.

Scotland lost because of a poor decision made by the ref in which he admitted. Since then Scotland have bet Australia at both Home and Away, they almost bet the All Blacks (If it hadn't have been for a knock on at the end of the game), currently sitting 5th in the world rankings, 3rd in the 6Nations (we play Ireland tomorrow 10-3-18) and bet England in the Calcutta Cup for the 1st time in 10 years. I'm proud of our wee team.
@magpieram6 жыл бұрын
Scotland were only in the game because of three poor decisions (Scotland collapsing three scrums, Australia penalised for collapsing those three scrums, Scotland kick 9 points).

The first one was so a red. It was a spear tackle. 100%
@AndrewDavidForde8 ай бұрын
It absolutely is by todays standard. But at the time, Warburton had made a similar tackle in the quarters that wasn't penalised and in the group game a team didn't even receive a yellow card for a similar tackle. It was very controversial at the time.

That Lions one was stupid and still annoys me til this day. Accidental offside yet he was able to hold the ball for a second and then intentionally release.. if the ref made advantage the ABs would’ve scored as well zzz no penalty, no advantage 🤦🏽♂️
@oisinmcwatt55525 жыл бұрын
Mate it's a natural reaction to stop something from hitting u. Then he drops it after half a second to be fair to the rules. The rules clearly state that if it an accidental offside then it's a scrum to the attacking team.

@@MrT67 they were offside the whole series.And got away with it,as Poite and Raynal were either too incompetent,or just plain cheating.And let them get away with it.
