I was surprised you missed Brazil man! HUGE land area, the Amazon is mostly in Brazil (I don't need to list the geographical benefits of it), lots and lots of long navigable rivers, lots of rainfall in most of the country, tropical climate which makes the agricultural powerhouse it is today, the total absence of harsh natural disasters (earthquakes, hurricanes and etc), a very long coastline which makes it defensible, lots of sunshine, water and food is abundant. So many geographical advantages that makes Brazil a very important country in the world, despite its social and political problems.
@Nick.Hasper Жыл бұрын
You mean the forest with infertile soil that occupies more than 30% of the land and whose the only use is the extraction of minerals (which causes environment problems) and medicine (only a fraction made in Brazil), the coastline with harsh mountains that separate most of the beaches from the rest of the country with barely any infrastructure outside the capitals, the tropical climate that doesn't contribute much to the agriculture since most of the productive soil lies on the endangered of desertification in the next 50 years biome (Cerrado) AND the cold subtropical Southern region, the long navigable rivers whose the majority leads to nowhere/one important city (Manaus) like the Amazon River, or VERY long navigable rivers that aren't useful since it's cheaper to use railroads or highways (like the Paraná River). Brazil's geography is good, but for each good part of it there's a problem.

Highly developed region, with industries, agriculture, livestock, highly educated people, living standards comparable to Europe. There's is indeed one major problem: big borders with drug producing countries, that facilitates the operation of criminal organisations. Honestly I think Iran's geography is more detrimental at times than beneficial, sure it's incredibly defensible, but one of its most important ports lies outside the zagros mountain range, it's rugged terrain also makes communication and infrastructure within the nation very very difficult, it was shown in the Iran Iraq war how the geography was a double edged sword, Iraq was eventually beaten back at the zagros, but the amount of forces the Iranians could commit beyond the zagros was small, due to logistical issues, while the Iraqis had a very easy time supplying their forces across the flat Mesopotamian plain. Iran is definitely a 2 sided coin, on one hand, lying where it is on the silk roads allowed early empires to rise from Iran, on the other hand, expansion outwards is basically a must for any Iranian empire, it needs to project power outwards since the region directly next to it is mostly flat and easy navigable, at least in the west. Iran has also been somewhat difficult to unify due to how muktiethnic it is since the mountains divide the country creating groups independent of one another. Another point could be that as society progressed, Iran's geography became less beneficial, while petroleum definitely was a boost to it. Iran faced another problem by the early modern era, it's inability to project power overseas, Iran was never a naval power, it lacks ports that easily connect to the heartland of Iran, the coast was very rugged and not the best to build ports on, there's also another detriment, the strait of Hormuz, the fact that much of Iran's most important ports are locked behind this key strategic choke point is a strategic liability, if one blocked it off, the Iranian navy would mostly be trapped inside the gulf, and in the early modern to industrial eras, an oceangoing navy was vital to becoming a world power
@arhaantgupta10632 жыл бұрын
mad disagree. If the iranains were to somehow control the Hajar mountains, it would be unstoppable as it would have full control over the gulf. Its shocking that previous historical iranain empires never bothered with doing so. If they also get a compotent govt that isnt corrupt and oppressive, they could absolutely dominate the region and even eventually reunite all the other iranain areas into one country (balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and afghanistan) and thus establish an iranain country that essentially encompasses the iranaian plateau+Al Hajar mountains. They are blessed with a land size that although huge, isnt so huge that different regions could become isolated from each other. Its only like a million km sq. Contrast this with america and china, which are each the size of europe, and different regions are so different to each other. There are, at least in my opinion, only 4 regions that are best (two of which are not on here because they arent countries as much as regions), and iran is def in the top 2 of that list
@tritium19982 жыл бұрын
It's obviously a dumb list anyway. It ignores Australia even though that's like the biggest island. Geography is as good as the nation makes it. In another world, had the US failed, some may have pointed to its geography. It's malarial swamps in the south, as well as it's massive deserts and mountains in the west could be used to make an argument for promoting disunity and stagnating growth. However the US invested in Canals and roadways and Air conditioning and the like to bind the nation together and circumnavigate its weaknesses. Geography plays a big roll but geographic determinism is always a danger. Just look at Argentina.

People actually really underestimate the strategic defensiveness of the northern border of the USA. In the east, the St Lawrence River and Great Lakes System form a natural defensive border - and even if you manage to get ships up the St Lawrence, good luck getting them past Niagara Falls. In the West, the Alaska/BC border isn't exactly defensible, but it's not far off, since simply retreating from the mainland would allow control over the remainder of the archipelago. BC/Washington is extremely easy to defend. The rest of the border is just straight lines through empty nothing far from the middle of nowhere. If either side invaded, the distance between the border and anything important is far enough to allow the defender to mobilize.

Greece also has a decent geography. It is very mountainous, with jugged terrain breaking it in two, but this has also proved important in defence (for example it helped Greece defeat the much larger and better equipped Italian army in WW2). Greece controls various small but inhabited islands and choke points, essentially dominating the Aegean Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean, while also its north and Eastern borders are fairly secure, due to mountains, rivers and sea borders instead of actual land borders. Greece has one of the longest coastlines in the world, and is a peninsula jutting south, which has always made it be able to project naval power outwards similar to Britain, without having to invest much in land forces. This is why Greece today has the largest commercial fleet in the world, ahead of countries like the USA or China. At the same time, after the fall of Yugoslavia, Greece has been left in an advantageous position when it comes to the rest of the Balkans, as it is the largest country in area, population and economy (if you don't count Romania). At the same time, Cyprus is a country that is closely tied to Greece, the only real problem there is Turkish occupation. And just as Turkey and Iran, Greece also stands at the crossroads between the East and West, and could effectively control ships passing from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean. Maybe it's not a top ten, but definitely and honourable mention.
@hpsauce10782 жыл бұрын
Greek geography was perfect for the city state political situation they developed, Greek geography certainly played an important role in giving Greek society the dynamism to develop many modern ideas (for the time). But the geography of Greece nowadays constrains the ability to create a unified nation or develop economically, Greeks have to spend far more than plain dwellers to develop national infrastructure due to its complex terrain
@georgios_53422 жыл бұрын

@@Hession0Drasha this is not true man. Greece isn't small for a European country, and especially the geographic area which it covers (the land plus the Aegean Archipelago and the waters it controls) are close to the size of Romania. Also, Greece has a population of 11 million, despite having lost many of its youth as immigrants to Germany it still has one of the biggest populations in the Balkans. And I don't get what you mean "too few to defend it". Greeks were even fewer in the past and aptly defended their homeland because of good natural defences, pride and perseverance, even against much larger foes. In fact Greece was even smaller in the past and its people under Turkish rule, a country much larger and "stronger" but the Greeks still fought to liberate Greece and we were successful.
@Hession0Drasha2 жыл бұрын
@@georgios_5342 Every country in the balkans is a small country. pride is irrelevent, in fact it's almost always a hinderance in achieving your goals. Water area shouldn't count for much, it's far less calorie dense/economically productive than land area and people cannot yet build houses on it. Isn't greece similar in size to serbia? And smaller than bulgaria? The greeks had advanced weaponry, and many allies in the balkans and arab countries against the turks. When the Turks have equivalent technology and gdp per capita, they would role over greece if the world would let them do it. International law/norms is why greece can defend it's maritime teritory, not millitary power. If Turkey/the UK/France/the US/Italy or spain wanted to, they could take all of the greek islands, patras, corinth, athens, thessaloniki. That is if it's just greece vs any one of them with no consequences. Most countries and people, would obviously cripple any country that behaved like that. Don't let your pride blind you to the realities of the world. Just because you want to believe that you are powerfull, doesn't mean you are. It also doesn't mean that power is even something that's worth having, beyond a basic deterrance. I mean look at the russians, so desperate to be powerfull that they accept terrible corrupt governance and a shitty quality of life. Like the only thing that matters is the abillity to be able to make their neighbours lives worse than their own. While infrastructure breaks, people won't have kids and no one on the world stage wants to emulate them, as they slowly slide into irrelevence.

India has great natural defenses too, the Himalays in the north and the Indian Ocean on three sides. Bangladesh is pretty good too, fertile lans and big rivers for irrigation and navigation.

New Zealand's geography is so remote it's basically the best country to live in a doomsday scenario, in the case of a nuclear war in Europe or economic collapse due to global warming, Kiwi's will be the best off for longest, which is why a lot of billionaires have been buying up land there and building underground bunkers.

egypt ould be great since their main agriculture and citys are on its center of the nile river which is sorrounded by desert whic is very hard for logistics of the enemy army and airfield
@natalianewsome13872 жыл бұрын
The problem with Egypts geography is also one of its greatest strengths Egypt lives and dies with the Nile yet Egypt doesn't control the entire Nile Delta and Ethiopia are building dams on the upper part of Nile showing that Egypt although one of the only natural countries in world also has some very big weaknesses
@mnbvmnbv79342 жыл бұрын
Being that centralised along the nile river is also one of its greatest weaknesses, in the sense that an invading power would only need to find a way to cross the surrounding desert and take over the main population centers around the nile plains to conquer Egypt. This is why Egypt has been subjugated quite alot throughout its history.

One of the weakest imo. Just block the Nile and they'll all disintegrate.

Not to mention Russia should be number 1. The video maker is literally on crack to position France and New Zealand but not Russia or Canada!

Good video, I think natural resources is a big factor to though in winch case the US should probably rank a tad higher and Australia should also be one there

Anyone who's played Assassin's Creed Valhalla can see how good England's geography is for supporting life. It's largely flat, with water and greenery *everywhere.* And, yeah, having what is essentially a giant moat around Britain is a great natural defence which paid off big-time in the second world war, helping to keep Britain free. Also, there are no deadly animals, and it doesn't get dangerous weather. Literally the only drawbacks are that the weather is a bit gloomy and it's not a huge country.

I say Colombia has great geography. No control over a major river, but access to the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf, plus the biggest cities are all in the Andes mountains and the Amazon protects the south and east. Will be hard to penetrate Colombia. Plus they can grow food year around. Mexico also has good geography for similar reasons.

The Magdalena river crosses the heart of Colombia and is fully controlled by them
@jdredwine72242 жыл бұрын
@@juanjimenez-ws9fx but only about 205 miles is navigable although there are plans to add 410 more miles of that as it is favorable to navigation. The Mississippi benefits the US because it is completely navigable without any engineering and goes from the Gulf to almost Canada. A Canal opened it up to Lake Michigan. Colombia would benefit with a great navigable river going it's entire length. A much improved freight railroad would help too going from ports in the river to places not able to be reached by the river.

Mexico is at war with cartels. Colombia with guerrilla fighters. None of the countries on the list are directly at war like Colombia and Mexico are.
