I don't know if anyone actually cares but the white makeup developed separately in Japan and China. Pale skin was considered a status symbol through both Japan and China as only the very wealthy and nobility could afford to not work in the sun and keep their skin pale. For Japan it was started by ladies of the court, who, as you mentioned, wore it partially because they wanted their faces seen in the dim light. It was picked up by the courtesans (Tayuu and Oiran as regular Yuujo couldn't normally afford it), artists (Geisha, Kabuki actors, etc), and eventually common folk for their different reasons. It was really fun seeing Geiko Naosome-san, Maiko Naoai-san, Maiko Katsuna-san, and I think Maiko Naokinu-san ^^

SpongeClods Universe the piercing of the nose itself is usually tradition. So most girls if they are following tradition will get it pierced in their teenage years. Like me. So I will wear an actual Nath for my wedding. But if a girl didn't get her nose pierced, she usually wears a clip on. But I have never seen or heard of anyone getting her nose pierced just to wear the Nath for the wedding

Holo world a lot of countries in East Asia actually prefer light white skin to their natural tan skin. Like in places like a China, Japan, Thailand and South Korea artists (as well as other people) are white washed or like to white wash to appear more attractive.

I wonder how each wedding would work if the groom was of that ethnicity and the bride was of another ethnicity. For example, if a Korean man fell in love with and was getting married to an American woman, would the woman follow Korean bridal tradition? I've wondered how a wedding would work if my friend's prediction was true and I married my ultimate bias because I'm American and obviously he's Korean.
