Andy Griffith also made "No Time For Sergeants" (1958) based on a 1954 novel, and turned into a successful Broadway play starring Mr. Griffith. He repeated his role in the Warner Bros. film. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Time_for_Sergeants_(film)

Thank you for bringing it up! I was aware that Andy Griffith started in the play however I was not aware that he made a film first prior to the play. I must have overlooked this aspect. But again, thank you for correcting me!

Well, the play came first, then the film of the play. Based on the novel that came before the play. haha

Not only is there are the Barnes and Noble semi-annual sales, but also Criterion's own sales are worth shopping. They don't always discount it 50%, so I will pass on some. I have been obsessed with them since they produced VHS and Laserdisc, and have entirely too many. Fortunately the library here carries many titles, but unfortunately some like Mr. Klein they do not. Many of Criterion titles I have in region 2, but I do replace those as I can. I am always glad to hear fellow Criterion fanatics opinions.

Always look forward to the Barnes & Noble Criterion sale. Thanks for your recommendations; some of these I have already, but it’s good to hear other’s favorites.

As a rule, I am sceptic about “lists” because everyone has his own. But I liked yours. I was glad to see that Jean Renoir’s “La Règle du jeu” was included. I also thought that “A Face in the Crowd” was excellent. But most importantly, I liked that you praised Harrold Lloyd. To me, he is #1 as far as silent comedies go. For this alone, I will subscribe to your chain. 🙂 I hadn’t heard about “World on a Wire”. It sounds interesting. I will put it on my want-list. If I may suggest titles, Jean-Pierre Melville is a sure bet, especially “Le Samourai” or “L’armée des Ombres”.

Thank you so much for subscribing! I absolutely adore Jean Pierre Melville. He is my favorite director of the French New Wave. “Le Samourai” is a film dear to my heart because it introduced me to the great and unforgettable Alain Delon and also to the Criterion Collection. I have seen many other films by Melville including “L’armee des Ombres”, “Le Silence de la Mere”, “Leon Morin Prete” etc, and they are absolutely incredible. Jean Renoir is another French director whose films I enjoy to the fullest.

The Human Condition is a hard watch but really worthwhile for its ~9 hour run time

It is indeed but nevertheless it’s a life changing film.

@@wespeakcinema9 The late British film historian David Shipman thought 'The Human Condition' the single greatest work in cinema history. I've yet to see any of it (though the same director's 'Seppuku' ['Harakiri'] is one of the all-time greatest films, and I also admire 'Kwaidan' and 'Samurai Rebellion'), but understand it also influenced Stanley Kubrick in some of his visual ideas in 'Full Metal Jacket'. 'Hopsotch' was a title in your list completely new to me, and I appreciate learning of all your choices.

The Jacques Demy box set is an incredible value during the sale. I think it works out to like $10 per film and they're all worth a watch
