All teachers use grammars to teach just like your text books. My contribution, like any other teacher, is explaining the idea or categorizing it to help students understand better.

Why derogatory? There are thousands of grammar books available in the market, from which I myself recommend Brush Up Your English because it's relevant and brief. However, not all students come to my class or have access to the book. If authors were sufficient, then there would have been no teachers. All writers are good, but some students need help and guidance. You might be well-versed and able to do it on your own, but what about those who look up to someone? I'm a teacher, not a grammarian that I should start writing grammar, which is already defined and transcribed by the native writers.
