Death, slam, brutal, black, deathcore... Will there be any room for traditional heavy metal in the future? Or is it dying/not trv enough? happy to see bands like Haken, Ne Obliviscaris, Gojira and Mastodon on the list.
@thearchivist78248 жыл бұрын
Traditional heavy metal has done everything in its borders and more. It's very hard to do anything with the subgenre anymore without sounding like a fifth-rate version of a much better band. We've got plenty of good material there already, it's time for other subgenres to take center stage. And honestly they already have.
@FajnoGlizdaMCP8 жыл бұрын
+The Abyssal Archivist I think there's plenty more things to do with the subgenre.
@FajnoGlizdaMCP8 жыл бұрын
And bands that sound like fifth rate copy version of much better band would sound like that even if they were playing slamming brutal blackened death metal. There is need for creativity.
@thearchivist78248 жыл бұрын
Of course there's a need for creativity. But when a subgenre has been explored constantly and isn't as massive as it used to be, there's usually a good reason. There's plenty of really dumb "slamming brutal death metal" (I don't think adding black metal into slam would be that good) bands that just rip off Devourment. But then there are bands like Wormed or Rings of Saturn that just go out the fucking window.
@DxtEppieDoe6 жыл бұрын
I think heavy metal is a bit done. It doesn't push boundaries, It doesn't feel fresh (it's an old sound) and it requires a lot of knowledge of structures, buildups, atmosphere, etc, which being just heavy metal means you're limited. I do like heavy metal though

+coverkillernation one of the top three bands should have been Disturbed. Formed in 2000 hands down the most influential modern metal band in the mainstream. And they've shown with a mortal eyes they can experiment with their formula and still be just as big. Last time I checked Disturbed album sales that surpassed 55 million Which is far more than most metal bands. And Disturbed has been around for 16 years and still going strong. Also a very influential band among the Christian metal community hands down and big even in the mainstream metal now. Demon Hunter they have shown they can rival the best heavy metal ore metalcore band. With albums like storm the gates of hell the triptych Summer of Darkness. End of younger bands with veterans I see still great influence for the band ashes of Ares. Or how about epica wintersun just as some examples. But hands down Disturbed is one of the most important current-day metal bands.

I was waiting for cattle decap! Travis' clean melodic vocals on their last 2 albums is crazy. The ability to go from chaotic death grind and be able to make that genre have some of the most melodic parts in music is unheard of besides them! Once people start being able to do Travis' clean vocals there's gonna be a new vocal style seen frequently in metal

Yesss... Mastodon! I knew it! And Ne Obliviscaris is just pure eargasm aswell, they're one of the bands that got me so addicted to Melodic Death Metal. God damnit, this made me so excited for their new album, and of course Mastodon's possibly double album.
@Count_Deangeli8 жыл бұрын
Good list, I feel there should've been more black metal bands on the list - BM seems to me the most vibrant metal genre nowadays. Actually, I am waiting for a new wave of metal bands that would create a whole new genre - similar to the thrash wave in the 80s, death metal late 80s/early 90s, metalcore in the early 2000s and so on.

While there's a great deal of exceptional new bands coming on the horizon, being the prime influence of the next generation, I think it's also important to note recently, up and coming solo musicians. One that comes to mind is one that's a huge influence to me in fact, Plini. Plini's first three EPs, have all gotten stellar reviews, and rightfully so. Even Steve Vai has aknowledged him for being one of the musicians of this generation, that made him feel that the future of exceptional guitar playing was secure. It's also important to say that, with the rise in other succesful solo musicians, and with the advancement of technology,(that I count myself lucky to have grown up in) it has made things much easier for amatur musicians to record their own music, without having to even have other musicians, a recording studio, etc. So, I guess you could say that all these solo musicians doing their own thing, and generating a fanbase, could count as something to influence the next generation do things on their own, I suppose :p
@olehsztul61777 жыл бұрын
That's actually a pretty good list, but I would have thought of bands that have appeared from the 2000's onwards such as the Indian Blackened Thrash Metal band Kryptos, Canadian Speed Metal band Striker, Canadian Heavy Metal band Skull Fist, Egyptian Death Metal band Scarab, French Heavy Metal band Hammer King, American Crossover Thrash Metal band Municipal Waste, Swedish Glam Metal band Crazy Lixx, French Glam Metal band Black Rain, Indian Blackened Death Metal band Demonic Resurrection or Canadian Power Metal band Unleash the Archers.

I was really surprised to see Mastodon on this list at all let alone at the top spot. I'm a huge fan of Mastodon and I was super excited to see their name. Coverkiller, in the videos I've watched for the last few months, really seemed to be leaning towards, though not necessarily favoring, more death and black metal as genres in whole.(Which he's allowed to do, it's his channel after all.) I don't have any issue with death or black metal, I'm fan of both, but I don't really consider Mastodon to fall into either the death or black camps. Crack the Skye is on my personal list as one of the best albums of all time, and I feel that they don't get enough recognition, at least among the other metal heads I know. It was very cool, and a little vindicating to see them at the top of this list.
