10) Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse(Classic stuff nothing much to add to what all the elitists claim these days) 9) Akhlys - The Dreaming I (Same Vocalist as Nightbringer but one of his many solo project, the term abyssal has never been used this good within a black Metal band.) 8) Watain - Lawless Darkness(Really the first album that got me into BM) 7) Darkspace - Dark Space III (A 80 minute travel trough space while floating and loosing oxygen, really awesome stuff) 6) Leviathan - Massive Conspiracy Against All Life (This list needed just one album of Leviathan, And i just liked this one a little bit better then Scar Sighted) 5) Deathspell Omega - Si monvmentvm reqvires, Circvmspice (It's so distorded and chaotic and hard to get into, but once you make it trough the barrier you can see the real beauty of this very unique band i used to hate this band for the chaos, but after a year or so i really started to dig this album.) 4) Burzum - Filosofem (I really can't dislike this even though Varg, sorry :( ) 3) Urfaust - Der Freiwillige Bettler (BM with a very unique sound special vibes, and a real cool rythm of speed makes it awesome) 2) Nightbringer- Hierophany of the Open Grave (Very Unorthodox, Really a hidden treasure band if it comes to good USBM, And i'm really hoping they will shore once again in Europe soon) 1) Deathspell Omega - Paracletus (I can't help it, i'm probably a DsO fanboy but man after i got to dig these guys i really enjoyed pretty much every record of them, but this one is probably the most friendly and accessible of they're whole discography, it has a very nice pace, Aspa's vocals can be friggin horrid and shredded, but his clean and very deep vocals approach you in a way if you endured enough yet and then the crazy/chaotic instrumentals attack you constantly over and over again. If i am heaving a talk about black metal i always feel like praising this band and this record it's something every extreme music fanboy should just experience out at least once. And what i probably like more about DsO is that these guys live in total anonymity they write music and unleash it on the world. without doing live concerts and such, they really focus on song writing and that delivers great great stuff.)

I would start with Venom's Black Metal, At war with satan, and welcome to hell. Hellhammer is also good, King Diamond/Mercyful Fate as well. Start with the 1st wave of black metal then if you're ready listen to 2nd wave of black metal like Gorgoroth and the like.

Like how Deafheaven is more of a post-rock band with black metal influences. But I love that side of black metal with lots of reverb, dense atmosphere and post-rock influences. It’s very much my style And yeah Mgla is great. I’d say they’re the best just straight up black metal band of the 2010s

I can't make a list because the only black metal albums I've listened to were Aquilus - Griseus, Saor - Guardians, Batushka - Litourgiya, Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse & Anthems, Ulver - Bergtatt & Nattens Madrigal and perhaps one or two that I'm missing. I love Alcest, Agalloch and Myrkur but they don't classify as black metal per se, just strongly influenced by it. This genre as a whole is not my style but if I find something I really enjoy, I'll listen to it more often. I'd prefer listening to atmospheric black metal mixed with something else than BM in its purest form. Opeth's Orchid and Morningrise also have a small amount of BM in them and I love those albums. I'm thinking about exploring Burzum for their/his experimentation with other stuff but I'm still delaying it for now. So while I can't agree or disagree with a list like this, I can definitely understand CKN's motives for pick these particular albums based on what he said.

'Dusk And Her Embrace' changed everything for me as a senior in high school. 🥺 I couldn't even pay attention to whatever was happening in class because I had dramatic melodies swirling around my head, and I could hardly wait to get into my Christian school's computer lab to access primitive Geocities websites to look for Black Metal, Death Metal, Gore Grind and Adult Anime. I'm a black metal pleb so I enjoy all the standard stuff: Dissection's Storm of the Light's Bane, Sacramentum's Far Away from the Sun, and Vinterland's Welcome My Last Chapter. Although they aren't really black metal (more of an epic, symphonic hybrid with black metal-ish vocals), Bal-Sagoth is one of my favorite bands. They are truly unique and well worth the listen. (with an album like "Starfire Burning Upon the Ice Veiled Throne of Ultima Thule" can you even guess what type of music lies within?)

I'm not the world's biggest Black Metal fan, but I LOVE Agalloch's The Mantle. It's hauntingly beautiful and it's really the only black metal album that I can listen to all the way through and still feel like I'm listening to memorable music. I love the song Transilvanian Hunger, but the album gets way too repetitive for my taste. I love some of the stuff off of In the Nightside Eclipse, but again, the album is just not for me. I also love Sylvaine's Wistful. I know that's more post-black metal, but, to me, it's within that same realm. Oh, and I enjoyed Myrkur's last album and Dimmu Borgir's last album as well.

Black metal is my favorite subgenre of metal and most of what I listen to, so I listen to a shit load of black metal. I also wanted to mention Wyrd, listen to motherfuckin Wyrd they're an AMAZING band. Either listen to "Heathen" or "Huldrafolk"!

The Great Maddening - Le Grand Guignol. This album is about 55 minutes horizontally, but years can be spent vertically delving into the depths of this record that is entirely unique. Any lover of metal does themselves a disservice to not explore this Luxembourg gem. The band was also heavily involved in Carach Angren's first few albums. Dont pass it up.

Well... BM is not my cup of tea but there are some gems out there as far as I'm concerned. When it comes to pure BM only one of my ten favs can be packed in that bag. And no... most of them aren't from Norway, none of them has a awful production and no I could not give a less f**k about that "trve" mambo jambo. Honorable mentions: Emperor: IX Equilibrium, Samael: Ceremony Of Opposites, Enslaved: Ruun, Blut Aus Nord: The Desantification, Varathron: His Majesty at the Swamp, Moonspell: Under The Moonspell, Negura Bunget: ZI, Melechesh: Emissaries. 10. Nebula - Re Un These kids from Portugal will leave you stunned... a sombre mix between Neurosis and Atmospheric Black Metal with a crapload of quality and crushing ambiance 09. Melechesh - Enki Best "comercial BM" I've heard so far. Though feeling a bit "plastic" these Israelis deliver excellent ethnic melodies, are fast albeit being diverse and pompous without sounding cheesy. 08. Mutyumu - Ilya Describing this japanese band isn't easy. The drumming and male voice are normally BM but the myriad of layers above include Classical, Jazz, Math among others... try it yourself. 07. Blut Aus Nord - 777 Cosmosophy These guys are on a division of their own and this record is dense, magnetic, beautiful, yet dark as music can get. 06. Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini What can I say about this band? They always deliver no matter the genres they bring into their sound. And this record in particular never tires me. 05. Primordial - To The Nameless Fallen Blackened Folk Metal legends had in this disk (in my opinion) their apex among a career of few (if none) failures. Everything here is crafted to perfection to the smallest detail. 04. Emperor - Prometheus Yup. I concur. This is Emperor's Finest hour. Listening to cuts like Depraved, In The Wordless Chamber, and SPECIALLY the superb Tongue Of Fire enforce this idea. 03. Ihsahn - Amr This one came out a week ago. And yes... I can be a slave of the moment. When I'll listen to it a bit more it can get even higher in my list... that's how good AMR is. 02. Bathory - Blood Fire Death Classical and mandatory listening for every extreme METAL fan... THE milestone of an entire genre. 01. Samael - Above So you think t has too much synths and keyboards? I don't care. It has a drum machine? Couldn't give less of a toss. The production is too clean and commercial? Don't give the slightest crap. Above is Samael taking a hiatus in their Industrial, Symphonic, more accessible Dark Metal and dragging their early material with uncanny speed, fury and intelligence into the 21st century, reshaping it to the band's mind frame entering the 2010's. Featuring some sparkles of SYL here and there, this beast is unmatched in ferocity and intensity when it comes to BM influenced speedsters. There are no special secrets here: just straight forward vertigo, relentless memento and excellent compositions that never, ever got outdated almost a decade after. Amazing.
