One thing to mention is informing your employer about your intent to commute by bike to work. My past jobs have been very welcome to the idea. They provided a safe place to store my bike, plus if I arrive a little late to work or need time to change or maybe even leave early to avoid some bad weather coming in they always been supportive.

Long ago, I calculated that my commute to university would take 15 minutes, so I always started 15 minutes before I had to be there. Did I mention that I based my calculation on an average speed of 40 km/h, and no red lights? No good idea, I gradually went slower and slower for some reason, not to mention that dangerous incidents happened way too often...

Carry a spare battery bank to plug phone and or USB front light. Of course make sure the battery bank is fully charged.

. . . . and priority Number One is missing - wear a helmet!! I'm 3 weeks after a crash on my bike, landed head first, two days in hospital from the head injury followed by headaches and a bit of work adjustment required but the neuro specialist stated quite confidently - I would be dead if I was not wearing the helmet. Always wear a helmet, that is your biggest, and least forgiving, mistake you can ever make.

In Holland mist of the people go to work Sith a normal bike Sith internal gears and a closed Chain system. Also we put om tires with protective material in it. No punctures at all. For example last year i had zero punctures and lube my chain once in 5000 km of commuting

Totally agree - the ideal commuter bike is low maintenance. Mine has hub gears, a belt drive, hydraulic discs, puncture resistant tyres and mudguards. The only day-to-day maintenance it needs is an occasional wash.

I rode schwalbe Durano DD’s for a couple of years, about 24000kms and only 2 punctures. Changed them for continental Grand Prix 5000’s and got a slice right across the rear tyre ... they lasted 5.9kms. Boy was I pissed. Luckily it happened right outside a bike shop so I was able to buy a new tyre.

The frame's too small to fit it inside the triangle. My daughter has the same lock and the same problem. Where he has mounted it the tyre will prevent it jamming the spokes if it gets knocked sideways so it's fine.

Nope you are not the only one. Kryptonite makes a special holder that mounts on the handlebar which would be much safer.

TBH, I gave up on USB rechargable lights and went back to battery powered ones. One less job to do everyday. I have a spare rear light and my front light gives me plenty of warning before a change is needed. (I do use rechargable batteries but they hardly ever need recharging compared to USB lights.)

On my commute to work with a mountain bike, I had only 8 thorns in my front wheel. The patching kit helped, but I was late for work. Roadworks can also cause slowing down a lot, as well as cars in traffic that do not give enough space to pass. Chain coming off is also not nice. I had the back luck of being behind a funeral process in a long straight road. All cars had their hazards on. It was impossible to see when a car wants to turn left into the graveyard. Having a reflective belt or something reflective around the ankles helps to be seen. My bicycles normally have three lights in front and at least two at the back.

How about wearing a helmet as number one? It's not just about having an accident. I've ridden past trees and had objects hit my helmet and / or visor. which prevented a nasty injury.

Wear a helmet. It could be the difference between a minor concussion and permanent brain damage. Maybe even death. Not wearing one really isn’t worth taking the risk.

Not advocating wearing a helmet is irresponsible. Sure, the ignorant and deluded amongst us will choose not to protect themselves from accidental knocks that could cause brain damage. But, in presenting tips, the bleedingly obvious safety tip is a glaring omission

Remember to pack your sense of self entitlement. No one wants to impede your commute so ensure you take up enough road to hold up unworthy traffic. As clearly the coolest owner of the road, throw your bile at passing cars, pedestrians and onlookers as we admire your prowess at mastering gyroscopic physics. You truly have earned it and thoroughly deserve it.
