you should do it when you drive too, your mirrors do not have peripheral vision.

Coming from a motorcycle background and about to start cycling for the first time in many years, this was a nice refresher of the skills I already have nailed. The standout for my background was the need to make eye contact with pedestrians, something which is less necessary on a noisy motorbike, so thanks, I have a new skill to add to my road skills. 🙂 Stay safe.

Hello, I am a regular cyclist in Australia. Two points. We show a narrow profile front and rear so fluro vest or coat helps others see us. I think headphones are best not used. Even at low volume they dull one of our major senses, we are the vulnerable ones.

I'm in a minority and I don't ride in such a heavily congested situation but I use both mirrors and Indicators. Mirrors mean I can keep an awareness of what's behind me on both sides but I still always look behind whenever I am going to change my position. And similarly with indicators. Hit the indicator for right/left AND look behind AND indicate with my arms clearly too. I ride a hybrid bike and no lycra. Much more in the Dutch style. But a great video. Snappy, concise and to the point. I think it's well worth watching this video once a week just to reinforce all of those important points especially for someone relatively new to cycling.

Lifesaver: practice in a safe place so you keep straight whilst twisting round. Dropping my shoulders before twisting works for me. The risk is steering right as you turn to look over you right shoulder. Once sussed it genuinely is a lifesaver 🤙

As a regular bike rider for over 15 years I want to understand why they think my risk to my head is so much more riding a bike than any other activity. If I get in a collision as a pedestrian or driver why wont I hurt my head?
@deafstoned9521

6:09. Fun fact, commuting everyday to work, I wear headphones and am still more spatially aware than the drivers. This is because growing up deaf, I’ve learned to rely on my sense of vision so much, that even with my hearing devices hooked to headphones so I can hear music,…I’m still safer than my hearing counterparts.

and for those of us that were not born dead, so sorry btw must of been a rough childhood, we have earbuds that can do pass-through audio. Basically you can still hear your surroundings as if you were not wearing earbuds at all, shit is magical.
@deafstoned9521
@deafstoned9521 Жыл бұрын
@@SuburbaniteUrbanite I wasn’t born deaf. I can speak read and write very well for a deaf person. My childhood is a topic (of a thousand stories) to tell in a video if I ever wanted to. I’m well aware audio transparency is a thing in some ear buds. Even with my hearing device, headphones that support such tech is handy at the best of times, and noise cancellation also at the best of times. I’ll just never be able to enjoy actual ear buds, or AirPods the way you do. I need over the ear headphones. 😅.

Find and use safe protected cycle lanes if you can. You won’t win the battle not to get close passed or inconsiderate driver. Install a right wing mirror and yes don’t ride on inside of vehicles especially large ones like Lorries and busses. Wear a camera if riding on roads.

I was deffo bad for hugging the curb when I first started cycling last year, I thought I’d be doing the driver s favour, aye at the expense of my safety, I went 360 and just take up the road now 🤣

For commuting longer distances you will get sweaty, and when it rains you will get wet. Cycling in cycling gear is also more comfortable, and when you get to work you can change into clean dry clothing. For short distances though it's not worth the hassle. Top tip for commuting is panniers, it stops you from getting such a sweaty back and also means your cycling clothing can work properly and bright jackets are not covered so you are more visible.

Sorry but the eye contact one is pointless because the driver never looks back and therefore does not care. There is no such thing as "acknowledgement" with drivers, they only care about themselves... they even take out their own.

@9:34 I don't understand why you and the cyclist Infront of you weren't in the green cycle lane, it makes no sense to be on the road when the cycle lane is available
@weezersthebluealbum9479
@weezersthebluealbum9479 3 ай бұрын
Research actually shows those painted lanes are more dangerous because it forces cyclists into an area where they can easily be hit by the door of a parked car and it gives drivers the illusion of being able to overtake in circumstances where that is extremely dangerous for the cyclist.
@QuincyLDN
@QuincyLDN 20 күн бұрын
Especially that part of Whitechapel is a tricky one with the traders from the market in front of Whitechapel station often leaving their equipment on the cycling lane particularly in the morning hrs when everyone’s heading to work, and afternoons when most people are off from work commuting back home. Hail riding services such as Uber/Bolt drivers etc. tend to double park on them as well, therefore, blocking the cycle lane. Sadly, a very common problem on that stretch of bike lane, so I’d rather have my presence known (as Jourdain said), and cycle on the road rather than the cycling lane on that particular stretch of road.
