The purpose of this film is to share my experience as a young architect working at Sheppard Robson. An award-winning architecture firm and one of the most established practices in the UK.
I spent 10 days filming the creative process during an architectural competition, the design of a 600.000 net sq. ft. office scheme in Leeds, UK.

Hi D, thanks for your words, not many people pay attention about the production/quality of the video itself. In a way I even feel more proud to be able to produce this kind of content than the work I did in the office during these days. I've been working at that level in the office for a long time so for me was more important to have a good feedback about the video than of my performance. Excellent video- I was an architect for a long time and this is how architects work in 2023. It’s a team effort, Lucas worked with others, ideas were generated and edited and presented. It didn’t involve a lot of fine art skills or higher math skills, or a burst of solitary inspiration, which are things prospective architectural students worry about. The team defined the program, developed a concept, and had a work plan to get it all done on time. A bit of evening and weekend work but no one is spending 24 hours in the studio.

Very refreshing to see a firm where the lead architects and designers actually sit down together and discuss on the concept of design and brainstorm the feasibility on it. Here where im from,(asian country) they just throw the project brief to us interns and expect you to come up with 3 design concept variety and present it within a week. and if they (senior architects) dont like it, they'll be very furious and scream the hell out of you. Hi @@congquan7006, usually we use the experience we have from previous projects to design. We don't focus in the technical aspects at this stage but we are conscious the proposal needs to be feasible and buildable. For example we didn't add to many details to the cores (vertical space use for circulation and services) but we make sure that the proportion between the area of each office floorplate and the core is the right one, about 15% - 85% to make them efficient. The same could be applied to the structure and the services. So the answer is yes we try to take in account in the earliest stage any aspect that will need to be addressed during the development process. I hope this answers your question. Hello! Thanks for your comment! That depends of the type of project and the deadline. Mostly we work in Revit and Sketchup. Revit if we need to design that project that will have more repetitive elements and Sketchup when we are exploring some ideas. If the office get the commission for the project and we are going to develop it further we use revit 100%. In the last years we are working with Rhino but it is not implemented as revit and Sketchup are. I hope this answers your question. Take care, L

Before BIM became was it was, I used to have the same process between 2D and Sketchup....you really need to check out Vectorworks. ArchiCAD is solid too, but Vectorworks is a bit more geared to how my "sketchy" brain works.

Hi Matheus, I'll try to answer your questions. 1. Not it's not. The working time is 9-17.30h. In this case I decided to stay a bit longer to push the design a bit further. Most of people leave the office at 5.30h. 2. We develop the projects in Revit but depending the stage of the project we decide to use more flexible softwares. If you don't have a frozen design sometimes Revit is a bit rigid. 3. I like to work on these early stages, in bids, in competitions but in order to get a full understanding of the design process you need to work in all the stages of the design. For that reason I'm currently working on stage 4 (technical design) stage 5 (manufacturing, construction) (RIBA stages, UK). I really enjoy working on the concept so I'm sure I'll come back to it soon . I hope this answer your question. Thanks again for your comment. Take care. L

1. it is normal. any student or architect student to be thinking he will have normal monday - friday 9 to 5 job working in architectural office (special ones doing bigger scale stuff, competitions etc), some reality check: stop dreaming. as great zaha says: if you want easy life, don't be an architect.

@@izoyt In my opinion that depends which stage of the project you're involved. In this case I knew if I stayed I could push the design a bit further. For example If you are working in stage 5 (manufacturing and construction) coordinating the information with the rest of the consultants, most of your work will be always from 9 - 5pm when others consultant teams are working so there is not too much to do after 5pm. If you are working in a bigger team and the project leader have assigned a well calculated number of resources for that job there is no point to make extra hours. But I can imagine at any office this could change a lot. In my experience with organization and enough resources architects can have a good job-life balance, but that's only my point of view. I dont believe what you see in this video is primarily the result of University study. The structure at a University is there to help guide you to this, but what you see in this video is more about a young architect finding their own method/tools to reach a design goal by a senior architect/designer. In fact, even though this video seems impressive, I would have to suggest its a bit old-fashion in that all this work will have to be redone for real in a BIM application - this is for presentation purposes only. BIM apps know have better options to stay inside 1 app for most the process (other than presentation perhaps).

Hi Camelia, sorry for my late response and thank you for your comment. In my experience the university will teach how to design and how to face a project methodically. Most of what you saw here is our personal way we developed through the years to design projects in an efficient way. These process in essence will be the same in a different architectural office but the steps could be completely different, there are some architects who need more time to think about the right approach before they start, solving most of the problems with the initial solutions and there are another architects that will face the project as we did, trying and failing, producing content from the day one. You can get a good solution trough different ways. I’m sure you will find your way. Even if you did not start your architectural studies you could start using and having fun with some of the 3D softwares we use daily, some as sketchup for 3D are very intuitive and easy to use. Maybe if you have time you could try to start using other softwares as photoshop, it will be very useful in the future. Pls don’t be worried to create content related with the architectural field. Try to have fun, for example you will get the same skills if you learn photoshop editing your own personal pictures as you were editing proper CGIs. So my advice is that, try to have fun and I hope I hope to see some of your work in the future. If I can help you with something else I’ll be more than happy to help. L

Hi CŌAcollective, I think this changes a lot depending on the office. In our case our main software is Revit. For 2D is Autocad and for agile 3D modeling, we use Sketchup. Rendering software, V-ray when we have time, and Enscape when we need quicker results. I know some offices use Rhino for 3D and MicroStation for 2D drawings for this is not our case. Hi Paco, thanks for your comment. Mainly we use Revit. In a speculative job like this one, time use to be very limited so, we prioritise the efficiency. For testing we try to use more flexible softwares like Sketchup. I hope this answer your question. L

Older gen. architects just know how to do loose sketches and make young architects' life measurable... Thank God they don't have to do all these tiring Sketch Up modelling, boring & complicated AutoCAD staff, Rendering in Enscape

Hi Jiri! In this case I used Enscape, it's render plugin for Sketchup. Sometimes we use V-Ray but I think Enscape works quite well if you don't have a long time for rendering. I hope this answers your question, thanks for your comment.

@@jirislany-designer9353 Hi Jiri, Thanks for your comment. I'm not familiar for the licenses to have your own practice as I'm working for a big one. I have experience getting registered for practise as an architect. To use the title 'architect' in UK you need to be registered in the ARB (architect registration board) so I suppose if you are the person signing you'll need to be registered. There is a second organisation RIBA, Royal institute of British architects but to practise you only need the first one. These competitions are private so the clients call some established firms and they design their proposals in order to get the commission for it. But I'm sure you can find tons of competitions that are opened to everyone. Usually when you get the commission for a project and you start with the design the structural engineers are on board from the beginning, as a another consultant like MEP, landscape, fire.... For a concept design bid we design in our own. As this is not our first office, we have some experience about how the structure should be. We don't detail that but of course we take it in account even for a concept design. So the answer is yes. In concept stage we design taking account broadly all the aspects necessary to get a buildable proposal but these are addressed in the future for the rest of the consultants. The workflow and speed are extremely impressive, but doesn't this kind of project leave you completely dead inside? If I had to work on competitions like that for any extended period of time, I would get depressed and quit.

Hi El3X I know exactly what you meant. When you are working doing competitions the amount of working is coming in waves. We have some weeks extremely busy and we have another 'relaxed' weeks when we have time to make some research about different typology of projects and we can chill a bit. I think it's important to find a balance. For sure I agree with you it's impossible to keep this rhythm for a long long time. Thanks for watching. L

If you are knowledgeable to do what you with cad and speed and all by yourself... You should kick these guys assess and work for yourself. Do your own designs. Make the big money for you, not for them. Screw them! They are using you. You are burning your eyes for the benefit of others!

@@mjc9388 @M: cad is not architecture, that is why it irritates me when most of us are forced to end up in the back room doing just that. It should be a separate category like a Tech school level architectural draftman. Your boss is not better prepared than you are. He can’t complete a presentation without you! I had my share of useless bosses, they hired other architects to do everything for them. Ironically, here is another example, an orchestral conductor wouldn’t exist without the orchestra. He even doesn’t know how to play the instruments. Maybe one or two. Somehow, he gets pay more than the musicians! At the end of the concert, HE, the conductor, gets all the applause and credit for the great orchestra performance.

Hi Eric, I'm sure there are softwares more efficient for these kind of modeling. When you work in a office you need to adapt your workflow to the softwares they have linceses for. Sheppard Robson works with Revit (main software) autocad and Sketchup. Soon they'll transfer the Skp ones to Rhino. I hope this helps you to understand why we used those softwares. @@Eric-tx2vw Eric before we start any project we evaluate with the BIM team which software is preferable based in the outcome we expect and the time we have. I imagine you don't have an extense revit experience in projects this size. To start a project like this in Revit in our office first you need a proper set up of the file from the BIM team to follow SR protocols, right coordinates, segregation on the model, linking models and we were testing ideas only for the envelope we would have to create dozens of bespoke families to model the only the facade. We're very fluent in Revit but I don't see any benefits using revit this time. Thanks for the suggestion.
