Nice build. TIP: If you did NOT paint (also reduce cost & time) the metal conduit the pvc will slide more smoothly as paint is sticky, where pvc on metal will glide pretty well. Also a light sanding of the conduit with 200x sandpaper or steel wool will smooth things out followed by a dusting & hand wipe down with a very small amount of corn starch based talc will provide a clean and sufficient amount of "dry" lubrication. Happy DIY.

you can easily paint it just a little more effort and money, What you could do if you really wanted some color is to paint your bars and what not, then to let them bake outside in the sun for at least 2 days, then get some 2000 and 3000 grit wet/ dry sand paper and wet sand the bars down till super smooth, then grab some light rubbing compound and go-over it a few times till you start to see it shine, then the extra little yard you could go is to the use automotive car wax and wax the bars. Should create an amazingly smooth and slippery surface. Total might climb the project to the 20-25 dollar range, but still. You get pretty bars now! haha

Good concept for a non-production DIY rig. Two quick & cheap improvements: 1) use Johnson Paste Wax or equivalent to lube the slider; and, 2) put pvc inside the open end of the couplers to further reduce wiggle. For a couple bucks: add a push-pull handle to eliminate the rags.

I used lubricant on the track and took a long piece of fine cloth(like the cloth you get with your glasses) and then sowed black shoe strings to the sides and it ended up looking really cool! Also I added 2 small 4" bubble scales to each side so my view is always level.

a good alternative to the "rag skids/pullers" is velcro. Specifically, the non-hooked half of a velcro kit. Most are made with a sticky back for connecting and mounting. The non hooked half of velcro is just plush or fleeced fabric. it's soft and smooth and will slide very easily over the pipe or PVC tubing. A pulling line can then be connected to the slides on either side of the slide table. Nice build, easy and straight forward.

Hey, great video! I found that extending the base by 2 1/2 in. (PVC) on both sides really helped with the fluid motion of the camera. I actually do not need the rag anymore because it moves very well. You lose some length moving back and forth, but not too much as the electrical box eats up some of the extra PVC.

+Film Riot Question, the title states its around $10 in price, when he lists the items needed for this DIY he does not talk about the quick release plate. Searching them up all the quick release plates with the tightener on the sides (which in this DIY you need one with it on the side) they all cost over $20. Does anyone know where I can get a cheap quick release plate?

Thought of a way to add to tripod. If sturdy enough, take a piece of flat iron bar and bolt to the bottom inside of the end. Then directly in the middle, drill and tap a hole to mount a quick release or directly to a tripod. And make sure bolts are going inward on the end boxes so you can still use it off the tripod.

I use a precision ball bearing drawer slider, less than $20 for 2 at a hardware store. amazing, quiet, sturdy, light. Working on time lapse attachment that uses dripping water pulling a string as the level goes down, portable and accurate, (if water is nearby)..

itsme: I have the same problem. I've been looking for a dog with four legs for years! Found one with five legs (check), found one with three legs (check), even found one with two legs (turned out she already had a boyfriend), and almost trapped a dog with seven legs but it got away. I remember when I was a boy everybody had dogs with four legs! What happened?

You guys almost need to make a second video where you don't try to talk at 2x speed and explain the building process more slowly. I would way rather a longer video where I'm not having to pause and rewind every three seconds to catch what's actually going on

You can buy sliders and dolly's for around that price, or just get a SLOLLY! Which is both a slider and dolly! Video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qHy1gHh4aseHmLc

Always love your ideas. If you had a good industrial catalog and some real tools and a bench...you might be dangerous. Kudos to you kid.

For lubrication you could use a silicon spray. It will make it smooth and does not get messy like the oils.

Hey Ryan! instead of using a rag you could use velcro ( any side) and if you cut it to size it looks a lot better.
